- Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) pressed Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to affirm that charter or private schools will not discriminate based on religion or sexuality. DeVos agreed that her department would follow anti-discrimination laws and deny federal funds to institutions that break them, but explained she wouldn't step into areas where the law is unclear, as it is with LGBTQ students. “On areas where the law is unsettled, this department is not going to be issuing decrees. That is a matter for Congress and the courts to settle,” DeVos said.

Do you know anything about how policy actually works within the scope of this individuals capabilities in the system? If you don't have the authority to do something all you can do is abide by whatever policy that influences your decision. There are such things as structured and unstructured decision making systems, if you know the difference then you understand the answer she gave to the question.
Also to the rest of you, ad hominem insults are not arguments, but if you think that then that's fine. It just shows how easily you can be brainwashed...
This lady is the Head of the Department of Education. She most certainly has an individual capability to do change to the system. She has the authority to do so. All she has to do is convince the committee that her proposal is just and reasonable. However she has failed to answer this Senator, as well as others questions and thus looks like she does not know what she is doing. My personal opinion is that indeed she does not know what she is doing. The lack of experience in the educational system is abhorrent at best.

I don't particularly like her either, but she did answer the question quite clearly. She said clearly she doesn't support any type of discrimination, that federal law is applied wherever federal money goes, and that congress is responsible for tightening up discrimination laws. He's trying to trap in her in saying something additional that her department is not responsible for.
She is an Ethnocentric, extremely under qualified, women who like Trump, will set us back 20 years in our education institutions !

First and foremost, I would love to have her attempt to go to college with no financial resources and feel the stress of paying for tuition and living expenses. I would love for her to feel the strain and financial burden of having to pay those loans back after graduation and still struggle despite having a great job, knowing that you have this weight on you that you cannot get out under from. It’s being stuck between a rock and a hard place; do I want to take out loans to get my dream career and be happy or be miserable in a dead end job that I hate? I wish she had to make that decision...
She appears to have no insight into what people live with on a daily basis. Not to mention her discrimination for the LBGTQ community and those who don’t share in her faith? Oh and the 9 billion dollar cut to education that she is proposing. What qualifications does she have? Oh yeah that’s right, NONE!
I would love to see her try to survive in a college class even with everything paid for. She'd fluke out within the first semester
One good thing about having DeVos in charge of schools is that you will save millions in text books. You only need one, the Bible, and you can get those free from any hotel.

Those Bibles in hotels are not free to my knowledge, and secondly if they were, can you imagine any scenario where millions of public school children are descending on hotels for their free bible? Her 'non-answer' answers in areas where she has the most of both authority, and culpability, means by not answering, it means, if questioned, again, about, say 'x' program, she can easily say "To the best of my recollection, I do not recall specifying saying that I would, nor would not, fulfill 'x', especially when 'x' is specifically covered by not only Federal Law, but State legislation as well. In any case, as 'x' is a State by State situation, by which I mean each State mandates 'x'; therefore I don't think it is appropriate to hold an opinion on what the Federal government should, or shouldn't do, in terms of a blanket mandate of what all states should do, or shouldn't do, in response to the individual needs of each State".
Thus, by being deliberately as vague as possible, she therefore neatly side-steps any yes or no answers, making it really hard to determine whether she actually had committed to a particular policy, or not, making it impossible pin any culpability on her ...
Anywhere else, especially in the State Department; DoD; and the trifecta of the CIA, NSA, & NRO, her answer would totally be filled under 'plausible denial' ...

in regards to her awful and veiled comment @04:52 "if they choose to"... they just do not understand that colleges structures their classes to keep you in school for the exact number of semesters they set out ... we can not simply "choose" to complete school ahead of time as much as we would like to, trust me. over the course of three different schools i tried to load up on credit hours to finish early and they WILL NOT let you. you're just a number and just a paycheck to this idiocracy.

If I was running the school system, I would surely push for better teacher pay. Pay them what they are worth, or lose them.
Right now with crt and LGBTQ in schools America needs to change the school system.either they comply or shut them all down
When they deserve more pay and follow the rules I'd consider more pay.however since all fed law made parents criminals I say hell no no pay raises if the don't like it don't let the door hit you in the ass.

#1 factor to avoid college debt: college choice. Go to a school you can afford to pay cash for. Apply for a thousand grants and scholarships, go to community college the first two years, and work a job.
