I am reminded of the Dean Markley pickup 40 years ago and again 10-15 years ago.
This clingon is more convenient. How it compares with Dean Markley soundwise, I don't know. But it does sound good in this video.

This would be really handy for open mic night when I’m doing sound and someone shows up with a guitar and no pickup.

Yes but remember you have to stick the magnet inside which might not be easy to do on the fly.

picked one up yesterday - its garbage plain and simple - like a mono download - muttled blah!

It really depends on the guitar and when it’s plugged into. I got good results but it will never replace a pickup that is permanently installed.
