XTNG Initial Install Pt 3. What do I think?

  • Third part of the X-Power Touch & Go Powers Systems Carburretor (XTNG) review on the GPX TSE 250R. Mixed feelings on the Bottom to mid range power compared with the stock carb and the idle speed needs fine adjusting from time to time. What I will say is there is a big jump in fuel efficiency making running costs cheaper on a ride to ride basis. I'm not done with the stock carb by any means so watch this space for a back to back comparison in the spring with it jetted correctly.

    You are finding all the short comings I had of the xtng. Only way I could get good lowend with it for acceleration is make it rich then under cruise conditions it will pipe bang and be blubbery. The hanging idle from my experience with metering rod carbs can be one of two things and it's weird actually in relation to a standard carb. A metering rod carb can hang high if it's to rich on top it burns the extra fuel like the choke is on if it goes up n down it as it settles it tends to be lean. Also from my experience that carb is to big actually the factory is to big if you go by bells formula and figure the carb size 28-30 is perfect for the power output and rpm range to give best throttle response. I would love to see you get it as good as you can and then swap the 2019 intakes and put a 28mm pwk on you will see what many of us have already figured out bigger isn't better but to many thing ohh we need that big carb no you don't James from jd jetting has proven that with a ktm 300 it only lost 8 HP on a dyno going from a 38mm to 28mm carb now that's a 55+ ho engine that really needs a big carb we are messing with a 223cc engine that might make 35-38hp.

      Interesting stuff Bobby I had read about smaller carbs giving better performance. At some point I will look at this. In the meantime I'll just keep riding the wheels off the bike and see where we go. I've just had a friend message about skimming the head to raise compression a little too. I may look at that as well when I decide to do a top end job. Heads are cheap enough but my concern would be reducing reliability. Thanks for the input most appreciated bud.

      @@RobboRobinson if you can find a USA wr200 head it will bring the compression from 120 to about 150 with everything else left alone. I'm not sure if the dt200 or whatever they where called in the UK had the same head as the USA wr200. The wr has a much shallower chamber than the tse. I would not cut much more than .030-.040" off the head. I had mine cut .080 and the squish band recut in an attempt to get the compression into the 170-180psi range and it lost structure and would warp every ride just enough to loose seal. Then I went to the wr head. I'm currently not even using a base gasket just yamabond "I'm not recommending doing that but I've got 200+ miles on it like that so far" but it has the squish closed to .038" and 180 psi it does really good at that with the old non race cdi I don't know if the timing would be to agressive with the race cdi or not.

    I've been waiting for your thoughts on this carb. I bought my TSE last summer and riding at 8500 ft. in Colo I knew I was gonna have to re-jet.
    After 3 try's I got the bike to run quite well. Then I started reading about how these $300 carbs really improved the performance of these 230 cc bikes, I understand how the Xtng could handle elevation changes, but they're still just a fancy carb. So I'm looking forward to see what you can do with the stock carb, which in my opinion isn't all that bad.
    Thanks for your video's on this bike, it's been great to hear a pro's thoughts on the GPX two stroke!

    Any ideas on what sort of MPG the tse250r or the tse300 would get on the open road?.......looking at getting one and road legalizing it for basically gravel road/adventure type use....and inconveniently there is sealed open roads between the fun roads.....

    • @RobboRobinson
      @RobboRobinson  9 месяцев назад

      The 250 with the XTNG Gen 2 Carb gets around 12mile to a litre. With a std carb would be less. I’ve not really tested the range on the 300 with the Gen 3 Pro XTNG carb as yet. Racing wise it was pretty good 2.5hrs on a tank before refuel. Standard carb would be maybe 2hrs. The 250 does have a better road mannered engine but lacks the bottom end grunt the 300 has. The 250 is less engine service maintenance so like mine its was 185hrs before I changed a piston and it was still a size A I put back in. The 300 being high performance I’d say piston change at 80hrs.
      Gravel roads / adventure stuff the 250 is great. That’s the type of winter riding I do on mine.
      If you start doing the more technical type riding with long winding hill climbs switchbacks etc I’d use my 300 which on the plus side has hydraulic clutch.
