I like the fact that they created a huge story over the brutally dark and tragic death of Jason Todd. (I can’t even tell if this is sarcastic or not, that’s how awful it was to watch him be tortured and beaten repeatedly with a crowbar and how good of a story they turned his death and resurrection into)
At the time of his death his backstory had been completely redone and at the time he was nothing like Dick Grayson anymore, him being like Dick changed very fast and he was given his own backstory and stuff way before his death.

So when he took over the books after the initial change to Jason's backstory about him robbing the tires off the Batmobile's wheels instead of Dick Style backstory, he wanted people to hate him as much as possible so that people would hate him and then he could kill him off. As the vote itself proves by being so close even though someone cheated, DC tends to overstate how hated Jason was by the Fans. Like yes, a lot hated him but if you were to look at the lettering pages of the issues of Batman that came out after his death you'll find that a decent amount of people asking for his return.
I would LOVE to know what could have happened if jason todd survived but if that happened I would miss out on one of my favorite charecters in DC comics
The comic was never finished until Monday, after the votes were in. Those last few pages were penciled and inked after Jason's fate was sealed. I was Production Manager of the company that did the color separations for DC. We didn't get the completed pages until Tuesday morning. The negatives were shipped to the printer that night. I told the staff that the book was very late and needed to be rushed through. No one was the wiser. In affect, outside of DC at that point, I was the only person who knew that Jadon Todd was dead.
I agree with you, that fan did the right, because without it, Jason T. wouldn’t be as popular and interesting as he is today, we would never have gotten Batman Under the Red Hood, and we would never have gotten the best Jason Todd (which is in The Batman Under The Red Hood Movie) ever.
Feel like killing a a character just makes the story way more interesting. Especially seeing how other big character react. Having big names die gives a comic real stakes and creates more investment in the characters
When A Death In The Family storyline came out, I didn't want to vote for the death of a child. I really disliked Jason Todd, by the way. I still don't like him. Not even as Red Hood.
