Absu - Tara, Sigh - Imaginary soniscape, Infernal War - Terrorfront, Anaal Nathrakh - Hell is empty, Goatmoon - Varjot.
@@Altars_of_Mattness I had never heard of them before and I grabbed that vinyl and was just floored by the musicianship on display, matched by the songwriting. Saw them live on that tour and they just destroyed the place.
Here are my favorite modern masterpieces.... 1. Hackneyed "Inhabitants of Carcosa" 2. The Monolith Deathcult "Tetragrammaton" 3. Hanzel und Gretyl "Hexxennacht" and "Black Forest Metal" 4. KMFDM "Hyena" 5. Lindemann "Self titled album"
I’m gonna make it a little more difficult and just pick albums from 2010-on: Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day (2017) Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name (2018) Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle (2013) Wormwitch - Heaven That Dwells Within (2019) Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel (2014) Cult of Luna - Mariner (2016) Panopticon - Autumn Eternal (2015) Gorguts - Colored Sands (2013) Kvelertak - Kvelertak (2011) Disillusion - Ayam (2022)
Djo's "Twenty Twenty" (from 2019 surprisingly) is probably to me a nearly 10/10 experience with coherent and very good sounding music allthroughout and almost ethereallike moments in songs Chateau or Mutual Future even more surprisingly Djo is steve harrington from stranger things incase you didnt know
"Pale Swordsman" was the one that surprised me to see her. Personally I can think of 5 modern era albums close to 10/10, Grifteskymfning - Djävulens Boning Grifteskymfning - Svart Materia Coldworld - Melancholie² Opeth - Blackwater Park Elder - Reflections of a floating world
A year ago, its inclusion would have been unheard of for myself as well. However, that thing just gets better and better with each repeat. I just continued to realise that there’s really nothing like it, so unique, well written and incredibly performed!
Now that "seven crowns..." from Sulphur Aeon is out you still consider " The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" their best? (i only listened to Seven crowns as their albums)
They weren’t missed, they weren’t picked. This is merely part 1 regardless, and two of those bands have one album each that I would consider to be 10/10 so stay tuned for that 😄
Post-2000 albums that are 10/10s? Let‘s see… Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001) Pain Of Salvation - Remedy Lane (2002) Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked (2005) Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2005) Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (2005) Summoning - Oath Bound (2006) Amorphis - Skyforger (2009) Mastodon - Crack The Skye (2009) Alcest - Écailles De Lune (2010) Haken - The Mountain (2013) Leprous - The Congregation (2015) Borknagar - True North (2019) Cellar Darling - The Spell (2019) Wobbler - Dwellers Of The Deep (2020) I don‘t want to call it a 10/10 right now because I might still be influenced by the hype, but I wouldn‘t be surprised if I were to add „PetroDragonic Apocalypse“ by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to this list in the future. Also, nice to see Havukruunu on your list. I slightly prefer „Uinuos Syömein Sota“ to „Kelle Surut Soi“, but great pick anyways!
‘Monolith…’ was very close to making it here, stay tuned for part 2 if ever there is one! Nile is an excellent shout that also deserves a spot, and love that Vektor is here, undeniable mastery! Never been a huge Mastodon fan, however that’s a widely enjoyed record for sure. Krallice is a band that has just never enthralled me, way too experimental for my liking. They’ve never captured and maintained my attention unfortunately! Strong list, appreciate it! 🤘🏼
Showing your young age...if you’re going to reference Voivod against Vektor then you have to understand that Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss & Nothingface are of a calibre of which Vektor can only dream.
@Altars_of_Mattness If you were around when these albums were released then your feelings would be different as they would have greater impact & would have more meaning to you. Anyway, you have mentioned a few I've never heard of so will check them out...
@@Kowinaida That’s not necessarily true. They can have just as much impact on me when I hear them for the first time in general. Death’s Leprosy (‘88) came out eight years prior to me being born, and that is one of my favourite albums ever. By your logic I should prefer Gruesome’s ‘Savage Land’ right? Tarring me with a brush because of my age seems a little lazy to me. It’s perfectly okay to prefer a band that is influenced by another that came before it. It has nothing to do with my age. Hope you find something cool amongst the recommended albums! There’s some killer shit in there 🔥
@@Altars_of_Mattness I guess I'm being too protective over Voivod! Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic that you're passionate about metal. Everything I see on TV for people around your age is aimed at those into utter shit music & culture. You'll carry that metal torch to your grave!
@@Kowinaida I totally get it, man. When I love a band and someone seems like they’re dismissing it lazily or unfairly it can be a little frustrating. Perhaps unlike some of the younger Metal guys you may have seen, I try and make measured comments based on my opinion (listening to anything that I plan on making comments about beforehand). I try hard not to make sweeping statements that I’ll regret later. I’ve tried a tonne with Voivod and it’s just not clicked with me up to this point. Maybe in the future, however I just prefer Vektor’s sound, but I can absolutely acknowledge that they were heavily influenced by Voivod. I live and breathe music and particularly this avenue of music, so I can get pretty damn passionate as well! Appreciate you hearing me out, this is why I enjoy making these subjective videos. @@DukeofItaly Again, I’m a huge fan of that effect. I’m a massive fan of a lot of modern Raw BM and there’s no chance the production on those is down to lack of access to good equipment. I just like the sound of it 🤷🏻♂️
As in they’re loosely associated with the dude out of Clandestine Blaze and the label he owns? Yes, that literally affects nothing, they’re not outspoken about their political views and all of their music focusses on Nihilism. What they do and say and worship outside of the music is none of my business.
@@eryko2338 I’d be interested to hear your take on that too! 😄 I’ve been thinking of addressing this kind of topic at some point, so it’s cool to hear everyone else’s opinions
@@Altars_of_Mattness you know, i'm from the same country as them. country that's been plagued by such idologies. so that's my first butthurt, another is that their music is outstanding, especially Darkside's drumming which is such inspiration for me as i'm drummer myself. i also love their atmospheric aproach as this is for me the most alluring part of BM. But since they never addressed the matter properly and directly (in my opinion) i'm kind of hesitant to be fan of them. so now you see my pain :) it's BMs right to be provocative, blaspheming etc. but some parts I just cannot agree with, even if it is as you said "loose association". you have to pick your friends wisely, as it was clearly seen when Neige from Alcest had to apologise for his experience from young years
Haha! Thanks for noticing! I actually got some help a while ago from a Polish girl who was doing some work experience at my old workplace. I pronounced it ‘Ma-gwah’ and she was like “it sounds like you’re trying to say ‘fog’” and so she corrected it slightly. I’ve got her to thank for that one! 😄
Phwoar, I was never a fan of this album. It feels wayyyy longer than it should be. ‘Devoid of Light’ was amazing and the one after ‘Cult…’ (‘Djinn’?) was decent too, although it had a similar problem, in that it just needed a bit of fat trimming. ‘Cult of a Dying Sun’ had some killer individual moments though, no doubt.
I have to be that guy, to me it looks like you just picked up randomly 10 albums in the top 25 most successful albums after 2015. I respect everyones taste but this is very generic shit for the genre right there imo

@@Altars_of_Mattness Sale freux is in my opinion the best French black metal act. Its the nasty and melancolic black metal from the rural part of france, he talks about loneliness and alcoolism mainly. Since i'm from rural france aswell, it really resonates with me, I have no idea how you'll feel about it tho. It takes time getting used to his vocals and overall sound. @@sharr3766 I just listened to the first 11-minutes of ‘Adieu Vat’ and holy shit is that horrifying! The unhinged harsh vocals and creepy sort’ve ‘clean’ singing going along with the tremolo picking are awesome. The snare drum sounds like he’s hitting an upturned tub of celebrations, but it sounds very primal. Right up my street, really dig it. It’s late, so I’ll have to return to it tomorrow, but I’ll let you know how I get on with the rest of it. So far so very good!
I’ve heard the Mgla, Kekht Arakh, Havukruunu and 1914 albums. They are all terrible, yet many people worship them. Most people seem to have very low standards. Mgla’s riffs aren’t dissonant, in fact they are very harmonious, which is one of the factors that contributes to them being so bad.
Harmony isn’t the same as melody. You can use harmony to create dissonance as the notes are simply layered atop one another. It’s the sequence in which they’re played that decides whether or not they’re dissonant. What are your 10/10s out of curiosity? I’d be very curious to see which bands you listen to based on your comment?

Absu - Tara, Sigh - Imaginary soniscape, Infernal War - Terrorfront, Anaal Nathrakh - Hell is empty, Goatmoon - Varjot.
Love that Vektor.
Same here, man. It’s so sick!
@@Altars_of_Mattness I had never heard of them before and I grabbed that vinyl and was just floored by the musicianship on display, matched by the songwriting. Saw them live on that tour and they just destroyed the place.
Here are my favorite modern masterpieces....
1. Hackneyed "Inhabitants of Carcosa"
2. The Monolith Deathcult "Tetragrammaton"
3. Hanzel und Gretyl "Hexxennacht" and "Black Forest Metal"
4. KMFDM "Hyena"
5. Lindemann "Self titled album"
I’m gonna make it a little more difficult and just pick albums from 2010-on:
Pain of Salvation - In the Passing Light of Day (2017)
Rivers of Nihil - Where Owls Know My Name (2018)
Caladan Brood - Echoes of Battle (2013)
Wormwitch - Heaven That Dwells Within (2019)
Ne Obliviscaris - Citadel (2014)
Cult of Luna - Mariner (2016)
Panopticon - Autumn Eternal (2015)
Gorguts - Colored Sands (2013)
Kvelertak - Kvelertak (2011)
Disillusion - Ayam (2022)
Can you spell It here, how do you said? Habakuru?from Finland
Of course! ‘Havukruunu’ 😄 They’re incredible, highly recommended!
Thank you very much!
Djo's "Twenty Twenty" (from 2019 surprisingly) is probably to me a nearly 10/10 experience with coherent and very good sounding music allthroughout and almost ethereallike moments in songs Chateau or Mutual Future
even more surprisingly Djo is steve harrington from stranger things incase you didnt know
1914 are a special, special band.
Truly amazing
I would love another Venenum album, fucking phenomenal album.
Same here for sure! 🔥
3 10/10’s for me:
The Ocean: Pelagial
Twilight: Monument to Time End
Disillusion: Ayam
"Pale Swordsman" was the one that surprised me to see her. Personally I can think of 5 modern era albums close to 10/10,
Grifteskymfning - Djävulens Boning
Grifteskymfning - Svart Materia
Coldworld - Melancholie²
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Elder - Reflections of a floating world
A year ago, its inclusion would have been unheard of for myself as well. However, that thing just gets better and better with each repeat. I just continued to realise that there’s really nothing like it, so unique, well written and incredibly performed!
Blackwater Park? This album is 22 years old...
@@go_went_gone In fairness, my definition of modern for this video was 2000 onwards
@@Altars_of_Mattness Argh, I missed that detail, sorry
@@go_went_gone It’s all good! 😄
Now that "seven crowns..." from Sulphur Aeon is out you still consider " The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos" their best? (i only listened to Seven crowns as their albums)
how can you miss peste noire, lifelover, black magick ss
They weren’t missed, they weren’t picked. This is merely part 1 regardless, and two of those bands have one album each that I would consider to be 10/10 so stay tuned for that 😄
sick jacket!
Why thank you!! 😄
Could you put the name of the last album on here please? Really wanna check that one out
The last one is Sulphur Aeon - ‘The Scythe of Cosmic Chaos’. Lovecraftian Death Metal out of Germany. Enjoy! 🤘🏼🔥
@@Altars_of_Mattness Thanks, man!!! You had me at Lovecraftian!!
@@Oldy-Sepulchre Pleasure! Oh dude, you are in for a treat! 🔥
Post-2000 albums that are 10/10s? Let‘s see…
Opeth - Blackwater Park (2001)
Pain Of Salvation - Remedy Lane (2002)
Nile - Annihilation Of The Wicked (2005)
Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2005)
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (2005)
Summoning - Oath Bound (2006)
Amorphis - Skyforger (2009)
Mastodon - Crack The Skye (2009)
Alcest - Écailles De Lune (2010)
Haken - The Mountain (2013)
Leprous - The Congregation (2015)
Borknagar - True North (2019)
Cellar Darling - The Spell (2019)
Wobbler - Dwellers Of The Deep (2020)
I don‘t want to call it a 10/10 right now because I might still be influenced by the hype, but I wouldn‘t be surprised if I were to add „PetroDragonic Apocalypse“ by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard to this list in the future.
Also, nice to see Havukruunu on your list. I slightly prefer „Uinuos Syömein Sota“ to „Kelle Surut Soi“, but great pick anyways!
A winter sunset is 11/10
Modern Metal (Post 2000) = Album art which features Twats in a wood somewhere.
10 modern albums I consider 10/10:
Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked (2005)
Cattle Decapitation - Monolith of Inhumanity (2012)
Dying Fetus - Stop at Nothing (2003)
Mastodon - Leviathan (2004)
Vektor - Terminal Redux (2016)
Yob - Our Raw Heart (2018)
Soen - Tellurian (2014)
Imperial Triumphant - Alphaville (2020)
Krallice - Dimensional Bleedthrough (2009)
Belphegor - Blood Magick Necromance (2011)
‘Monolith…’ was very close to making it here, stay tuned for part 2 if ever there is one! Nile is an excellent shout that also deserves a spot, and love that Vektor is here, undeniable mastery! Never been a huge Mastodon fan, however that’s a widely enjoyed record for sure. Krallice is a band that has just never enthralled me, way too experimental for my liking. They’ve never captured and maintained my attention unfortunately! Strong list, appreciate it! 🤘🏼
It’s nice when I come across wild local northerners on the internet, hey from Teesside 😊
Not sure about the wild part, but I’m definitely northern 🤣 Cheers dude! 🤘🏼
Just spun Cosmic Church, no pun intended but holy shite 🔥🔥🔥
Absolutely outstanding band! Chuffed you’ve finally discovered them 🔥 Enjoy, you’re in for a fucking journey 🤘🏼
14:50 This is pig'n black meh'ull
Hahahaha! It’s that too 🤣
Showing your young age...if you’re going to reference Voivod against Vektor then you have to understand that Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss & Nothingface are of a calibre of which Vektor can only dream.
What does my age have to do with my music preferences? 🤣 I’m just not a Voivod fan, it’s as simple as that
@Altars_of_Mattness If you were around when these albums were released then your feelings would be different as they would have greater impact & would have more meaning to you.
It’s all love 🤘🏼
Hidden History of The Human Race should be in this list. That album is a perfection of what BI sounds like.
It shouldn’t be in mine, however. ‘Starspawn’ is a far superior album imo, however I’m still not certain I’d class it as a 10/10
Sermon of Flames- I Have Seen the Light, and It Was Repulsive

Misþyrming, Bølzer, Macabre Omen, Blood Incantation, Svartidauði, Urfaust in my list.
Yes
You should just embrace the jewel case, glares not that bad : )
The only actual 10/10 (as in it will stay 10/10 because it will not be topped anytime soon) is 2014’s Dead Congregation - Promulgation of the Fall.
thron-dust
Dawg there is no way that Kekht Arakht is a 10. That last track is abysmal
That’s the beauty of subjectivity, I absolutely love that track, and the album is stunning in my opinion 🤷🏻♂️
@Altars_of_Mattness I will say it's got some riffs. I definitely found the vinyl crackle to be grating though. Almost like a fake lo fi quality
@@DukeofItaly Again, I’m a huge fan of that effect. I’m a massive fan of a lot of modern Raw BM and there’s no chance the production on those is down to lack of access to good equipment. I just like the sound of it 🤷🏻♂️
You a geordie?
Not quite, I’m from Durham, so there’s Geordie in my accent for sure. I work through Newcastle, too 😄 Good ear though, close enough!
are you comfortable with Mgla's background?
As in they’re loosely associated with the dude out of Clandestine Blaze and the label he owns? Yes, that literally affects nothing, they’re not outspoken about their political views and all of their music focusses on Nihilism. What they do and say and worship outside of the music is none of my business.
@@Altars_of_Mattness oki doki, thats your opinion which you have full right to :)
But since they never addressed the matter properly and directly (in my opinion) i'm kind of hesitant to be fan of them. so now you see my pain :) it's BMs right to be provocative, blaspheming etc. but some parts I just cannot agree with, even if it is as you said "loose association". you have to pick your friends wisely, as it was clearly seen when Neige from Alcest had to apologise for his experience from young years
its bm. no one cared back in the 90s now ppl like you care. most ppl dont care.@@eryko2338
Most english speakers choke on Mgła’s pronounciation but you didn’t 😂
@@Altars_of_Mattness I knew it!
I love mgla but for some reason like their other work a bit better.....kind of drone
No 11 : ruclips.net/video/4tBMzPftXYM/видео.html
Phwoar, I was never a fan of this album. It feels wayyyy longer than it should be. ‘Devoid of Light’ was amazing and the one after ‘Cult…’ (‘Djinn’?) was decent too, although it had a similar problem, in that it just needed a bit of fat trimming. ‘Cult of a Dying Sun’ had some killer individual moments though, no doubt.
Horrified has another album. Sentinel I think? Not nearly as good. Strange vocals.
Yeah, it’s an EP that one. I enjoyed it. The vocals remind me of the high shrieks of Horrendous. Definitely up my street!
no thy darkened shade? blasphemy
I have to be that guy, to me it looks like you just picked up randomly 10 albums in the top 25 most successful albums after 2015. I respect everyones taste but this is very generic shit for the genre right there imo
By all means, pop your favourites in the comments and I’ll take ‘em on board and check them out

I appreciate your curiosity. If we are strictly talking about Black Metal albums past 2015, Id go as follow.
- Both albums from Hostblod (dikter and Morkrets are both excellent)
-Anything by voidsphere (I suggest to" sense to perceive" as a a good entry point)
- Sale freux, either "Adieu vat" or "trouvère à heure perdue" both are excellent
- Sanguine eagle - Shores of avarice or Individualisation
There are plenty more but I think these are great underground albums without going in the "unaudible trve kvlt unknown territory"
I'll appreciate discussing with you on how you felt about any of these recommendations. I'd also be pleased if you had suggestions aswell, aside from the usual popular metal acts such as the ones you displayed in your video
Cheers
@@sharr3766 Perfect, I shall check them out and let you know what I think! Cheers for dropping these in here. Love French Black Metal on the whole, so I’m excited to see what Sale Freux are like.
Right now I'm listening to a very long track he did for a split in 2022, its excellent

I'm curious to know what your list would look like.

Yo. Kudos for patches (𝕰𝖓𝖙𝖔𝖒𝖇𝖊𝖉!) and rev of Mgła - but - could you do something with the acoustics?
