  • L.D. Jeffries, EAA 660758, was looking for something to do in his upcoming retirement from United Airlines - all he knew for sure was that he wasn’t going to sit on the porch. He’s decided to indulge a lifelong dream and become an air show pilot, flying the FLS Microjet named Lil Devil. Read the full story of L.D. and his little jet in the August issue of EAA Sport Aviation magazine.

      Not for "reverse" thrust- for MODULATING the thrust on approach so the engine can remain at a high output for fast response. You really can't throttle those little jet engines down, so you just deflect the exhaust to kill some of the thrust.

      No, not at all. This is a jet and the company I work for builds and maintains a fleet of these (N21AP, N23AP, N55PQ and N78AP). These are serious Jets, and if you treat them like a go-kart you'll likely not be flying one for very long. We have had f-16 pilots refuse to do anything in this plane after a high speed taxi, we have lost a pilot, this can be a fun plane but it can also be dangerous if you underestimate it. My former boss (company was sold, I still work here) was the coars light silver bullet in the 80's and 90's in one of these.

      @@suserman7775 he got just a tad to fast got some lift for a few seconds it got a little squirelly for a second and he decided at that stage in his life he rather be around for his grandkids. I think most pilot's just get a little nervous because of the different height most pilot's fly at they have a cockpit 10 ft off the ground, unless you fly alot of gliders most have a hard time with that different reference. He was a great pilot too it just can be scary with something with such a different frame of reference.

    This plane has been flying since the days of Jim Bede, it was never out of the circuit. Justin Lewis has one and he has been flying in the Jet in airshows for a while, before that Bob Bishop was doing aerobatics and airshows through the 70's, 80's and 90's, he was also the coars light silver bullet for many years. Bob was one of the original test pilots and engineers working with Jim and he purchased more than 20 kits when Bede went out of business. Alturair also has many kits and sells parts for the BD5J. Our company in the early 2000's started doing contract work for the government and we have 4 of these planes, the earliest being built in the 70's and our newest one N78AP that we finished last year.
    The TJ-100 is a good engine but it never had enough thrust for what we use it for it runs at about 276 lbs of thrust PBS and another engine company came out with better engines in the TJ-150 at 336 lbs of thrust and the other company coming in at 350 lbs of thrust. I do love seeing people bring these planes back into the limelight as they are amazing planes, just wanted to correct some of the info.

    I owned a BD5-J about 15 years ago briefly. I had to sell it. No matter what I did- lower the seat, remove the seat entirely and glue in a foam pad, didn't matter- I couldn't fit in it. My head stuck out the canopy about 2 inches. Can't fly scrunched down like that, and no way no how could I wear a helmet. My legs were too big as well, so I couldn't get out of the thing quickly if I had to. Was a dream of mine to own one since I was a kid, but alas, 6'1" is just too big unless you cut it and stretch it (which someone did a while ago). Oh, and mine had a thrust reverser as well. I had a different engine, slightly larger, but never got to fly it.

    Not certain if it was 1970 or 71, but I had my private and saw an ad in an aviation magazine and ordered the info package. At that time Jim was offering the kit as either a powered V-tail or glider version. They had drawings of guys flying it looking really great and as a teenager I was sold. My CFI talked me down “lol” so there was no pitch to my folks for support which was good. At that time EAA in my view anyways still wasn’t all that popular so when Jim changed the tail to a straight tail it was for me almost a confirmation that I should calm down and wait until it had actually flown. The rest is history until it resurfaced again with well known guys flying the jet version like Bobby Bishop. Wish I had saved those ads.

      There is also a screened intake area in the wheel well, specifically for high power settings like take-off and go-around. The two spring loaded side intakes work very well at pressurizing the intake area and the Naca vents at those intake ensure plenty of air, even during yaw or uncoordinated flight.

    As someone who loves airplanes, and i've been fascinated about them and their history. I have always wanted to fly an airplane. Since i am too tall i couldn't join the Finnish air force. And am hoping to one day be able to fly something similar to this.

    • @christopherrogers6194
      @christopherrogers6194 5 лет назад

      If you were too tall for the airforce then your likely too small to fly the BD5J, I work for a company that builds and maintains a fleet of this for government work our requirements for new pilots is a shoe size of less than 10, and be 5'11" or shorter. This video also gets a few things wrong Bob Bishop one of the original BD5 owned the company I work for he has been doing airshows in these since the 70's he was the coars light silver bullet for years, we then started work for the government in the early 2000's. There is also a guy named Justin Lewis who currently flies his BD5J in airshows. We are in the process of building even more BD5J and it is because there was recently 2 new engines released one by PBS and 1 by AMT both with thrust over 336 lbs. Up to this point the engines were difficult to get because the original manufacturer who made the jet engine started buying them back due to the underpowered engine being used and several BD5J crashing because of this. The BD5J may seem like a go-kart but it is indeed a high performance jet, and it has killed many pilots who have tried flying it. We have had f-16 pilots wash out of the program because of the fact it can be very intimidating. For one when landing or doing high speed taxiing the only reference you have for the ground is to the left and the right. You also are only sitting about 1 foot off the ground so many pilots drop the airplane from 5 ft. This is a fun plane but also a very dangerous one, because you do not have an experienced pilot who can be in the seat behind you on the first few flights. I do the avionics and we are very strict and thorough because of this.

    My father, who was in the Aviation business for many years, saw the original BD5 (?) at one of the large air shows. As a kid I remember he told that it only took off because of the curvature of the Earth... Guess there are better turbines available now.
    I want one :-)

      I heard the opposite. The one in Denver has reverse thrust like a learjet because at idle, it moved too fast to taxi

    • @rudolfabelin383
      @rudolfabelin383 6 лет назад +2

      I did a little Google research that says that the first BeDe jet had a Sermel TRS-18-046 turbojet (Sermel was later bought by Microturbo) with about 1.0 kN thrust. Weight just under 400 kg gives roughly a quarter g of acceleration. Dad is gone since many years and this was in the 70th. So I think I stand down.... Anyway, lovely aircraft that was in the Bond movie Octopussy. As you say, many executive jets taxi with reverse so they don't heat up the breaks or taxi too fast.

      Rudolf Abelin, that is correct, they used a lot of runway. Saw it many years ago, and it used more than the Airbus that was next to fly.

    Mr. Jeffries: Must be more fun than hand-flying from takeoff to FL 180-210: did this quite often in DC-9s etc until retirement on the B-717 (Delta) in 2016.
    Are your spare parts quite available these days? Your engine must have some sort of FADEC to help prevent compressor stalls etc due to those tiny inlets.

    Does it have a longer range than the original with the aerodynamic improvements? I remember seeing the bud light micro jet fly at Mira mar and it could only fly for two hours if I remember correctly , but it is still a beautiful little toy.

    OMG. TRs. This plane has TRs!!! Wow.
    Love this plane. My vocational school I was going to while in high school had one for a display. When the school closed I had a chance of getting it but they wouldn’t sell it to me at the fear I was going to rebuild it and try to fly it. Liability issues.

      It's actually called an Attenuator and only deflects the residual idle thrust. On the FLS, one of the safety features is the power has to be at flight idle to open the attenuator, and it locks out the throttle when it is closed. The idea being, if you are using the attenuator you are either trying to slow down, or go down so there is no need for additional thrust. It is very effective and lowers the landing distance to just under 1000 feet when used. It's easily an extra 1000 landing distance when not used because the engine idles at 59% which equates to about 150 lbs of thrust.
