    His comment ( if I understand him correctly ) that only the factory built bd5 were successful and capable of flying until this guy.
    That is completely incorrect. Several bd5-j were built outside of a factory. I am unaware that their is some factory who builds them in the 1st place..
    My father (Edwin "Ed"Johnson ) personally built 3 Bd's in the 80's. He ( my father) also is the 1st Bud Lite Anheuser Bush BD5 pilot in the air show business
    . One reason my dad decided to hang it up was because the engine company that exclusively built the engine went belly up for obvious reasons ( Not a butt load of BD5 -J's were built in its life)..
    . So ya, sorry but you are not the 1st to build one.
    I do recant my comment about a BD-5 manufacturer. If memory serves me ( I was only 4 or 5 yrs old at that time) You do actually order a BD5-J kit which in turn you have to build...
    None the less, your jet looks fantastic. Looks like their are some upgrades to the pilot digital console. The old ones were pretty basic...

      I work for one of the original test pilots and engineers on the BD-5J, Bob Bishop, Justin Lewis is a friend of ours and we routinely use him to train our new pilots. Justin is very aware of the history of the BD-5J.
      N21AP and N55PQ were 2 of the first BD-5J produced at home. Bob Bishop flew them in air shows throughout the 70's, 80's and 90's with us transitioning to DoD contract work as our BD-5J look like cruise missiles. Bob Bishop was also the first BD-5J to fly as the Coars light silver bullet (I still have the wings in the shop). We have a fleet of 4 now and we use Justin often, he's a great pilot a genuinely nice guy, and very respectful of the BD-5J, and always safety and mission oriented.
      There is also no factory that ever built these planes, there is a guy "skeeter" who will build the fuselage and wings for you, that's about as factory as you will get. The engines also became scarce not because of the company going belly up but because the company started buying them back after several BD-5J were involved in accidents using the TRS-18. That is not a problem anymore as there are 2 jet engines made 1 with 336 lbs of thrust and the other with 352 lbs of thrust. Both of which are smaller than the TRS-18 at 10'' diameter.

    So, what are the pilot size limitations on this craft? I attempted to sit in a mock-up one in some aviation museum somewhere in the US (can't remember where), having been a BD5 fan from my youth but I was a full head-height outside of the canopy...

    • @christopherrogers6194
      @christopherrogers6194 5 лет назад +2

      Most of our pilots are relatively short, no taller than 5'11'', but that also all depends on if the height is in the legs or the torso. Longer legs is better because you can kinda squish yourself in there, but if it's torso you won't be able to close canopy. There is also a shoe size limitation of no larger than a 10-10.5, because where the pedals are is just below our main avionics bay, and your feet can get stuck on that tray. Shoulders can be an issue too, I have broad shoulders so I get pinched in, and it's hard to move around in there.

      Actually the composite material would likely not be stealth where we use fiberglass we have to use a metalized paint to make it so you do not see the wingspar. They are already fairly stealthy as the signature on radar is no bigger than a cruise missile, which are extremely difficult yo detect.

    How much did the entire build cost? I've seen that you can buy the BD-5 kits for $4000.00 dollars. is that true? I was orginally looking to buy a "HoverBike?" Like the ones Dubai Police is going to start using by 2020. However, they're asking like $40.000.00 to buy?? In you expert advice, what would be the cheapest way I can get into the air and FLY? Would it be the BD-5? Or another "Kit?"
    If you could get back to me at your earlist convenience, it would be much appretiated! Thanks kindly.

    Looking to spend no more than $10,000? Unless, it't good of a deal to pass up??

    • @BruceBusby
      @BruceBusby 5 лет назад

      This is definitely NOT a good way to, "get into the air". It's seems small and cute but there's no way a low-time pilot lives through a flight in this thing. A no-time non - pilot would live until high speed taxi and maybe a second or so after lift off. Look at the roll rate and round out speed. Little wings mean lots of speed.

    • @duster8
      @duster8 5 лет назад

      Cheapest way to get into the air safely, would be a paramotor or powered parachute on a trike if you can't run 50 yards. MUCH slower though. lol Even those will probably cost you $15,000 total for wing, motor, and training (if you chose). If it has to be an actual airplane, there are many ultralights that don't require training. Look into quicksilver, belite, kolb, etc. I think you would have to be pretty stupid to fly anything without training though.

    • @christopherrogers6194
      @christopherrogers6194 5 лет назад

      Just so you know the engine alone will cost you a minimum of 65k us dollars they go as much as 80k for the PBS tj-150. It takes us a year to build it and do all wiring, and the avionics are about 30-40k each jet. So minimum flight worthy one of these is in excess of 150k us dollars.

    • @christopherrogers6194
      @christopherrogers6194 5 лет назад

      @@BruceBusby we had an F-15 pilot quit the training after his first high speed taxi, he got a little lift he got squirrely and landed and said he was done. This plane is not a toy and those who do get into it and actually do fly it change their minds about this being a toy. It's a serious aircraft, and only experienced pilot's should fly them, and even then flying a glider first is a pre requisite of ours, as the landing profile is pretty much the same as a bd5j. You are sitting 1 foot off the ground not 4-15ft above the ground like most pilots are used too. Landing these is very hard for most pilots and we have had to do major repairs after a few 1st landings of people. They bend the fuselage where the intakes are.

    • @invertmast

      Its likely more for ground support and a second set of eyes. There is alot going on behind the scenes in the airshow business where having someone to take care of the service and maintenance aspects of the airplane is more convenient than having it all on the hands and mind of one individual.
      The Bd5 will also tip in its tail once the pilot gets out, which is why you see the sandbags being brought up towards the end of the video.
      The wings are also removable and having a second set of hands makes installing and removing those wings much easier.

    Why the huge dash covering up at least 15% of the front view of the pilot unnecessarily??! This is not necessary... at all. And what is with the terrible job of riveting? The rivets look like they are not even flush/recessed rivets? The avionics look very weak. A ping pong ball on a string cold easily eliminate half of all that clutter.
    Why would you build a “Home built” then Put a huge avionics package on it to go no farther than 300 miles?

    • @phlodel
      @phlodel 5 лет назад +1

      As I recall, the original BD5s were pop riveted.

    • @christopherrogers6194
      @christopherrogers6194 5 лет назад +2

      Skeeter uses the pop rivets, on our aircraft we use solid rivets.
      As far as the view being obstructed, have you ever tried to put one of these together?? There is literally not much room to put things on this aircraft, where his screens are is the only place you can put them because of how the pilot sits in there, and behind those screens is the one of the avionics bays, which has the AHRS, GPS modules, and a bunch of other stuff. It would be great if we had more room but the aircraft is just so dang small. I assure you that it is very necessary.
      Why would you put all this stuff on it if your only going 150 miles, not 300. Well you have obviously never flown one or seen one. But having all that avionics in there is for safety. He's flying low to the ground doing an airshow, the amount of info gleamed from one of those screens at a glance is far more you get from steam gauges. If you have never used an EFIS I suggest you try it they are very handy for precise flying, and for us since we do DoD work accuracy is super important as well as safety since we only fly at 50 ft above the ground. An efis shows you the terrain which is life saving when you are at 50 ft. Remember accuracy and safety.
      You talk a lot of trash man for something you have absolutely no clue about, quit being so angry about stuff you are ignorant about,.
