- Comparing two ribbon mics. COLES $1400 - Stager $700.
With and without EQ so you can hear the difference.
ENJOY! NO EQ THEN I ADD IT STAGER THEN COLES

I like the crunchiness the high end has on the Coles with the EQ.
Yea you can push a coles in so many places! Theyre amazing
Coles just never fail to instantly achieve that 60s vibe... Definitely overheads.
0:00 Stager
0:45 Stager EQ
1:57 Coles
2:51 Coles EQ
I was listening to this in the midst of a zoom call and it lined up perfectly with some piano piece, and it was really cool.
Both Coles and the 2nd Stager sound great after the first listen! Love how all these mics give you so many options for the sound you’re looking for!
Stager through EQ is the sound of my dreams:)
Great comparison video! Thank you!
Stager is a clear winner in my book. How fantastic it sound with EQ. And the transients is just great. It has a sweet sound. It is gentle and big sounding.
Coles is as always a bit smeary and "Phasey" sounding in the upper mid and high end. I own 2 Coles and while they do get used, they end up being switched out more often than not just because of the Upper mid/high end wierdness. It also does not take EQ that well, compared to my other mics. Even though Coles is "Brighter" by nature compared to the Stager, it feels as if it´s much Harscher sounding, than many Ribbon mics.
I think it´s time I sell my Coles and trade it for Stager. Intrigued to hear how the SA1 sounds compared to this smaller one.
Thanks again for the well made video.
@Ted Krotkiewski you want to sell your Coles to me!? 😁
Muy bueno el sonido de toda la batería!!!!!!Felicitaciones.Saludos desde Argentina
Thought the stagers had more depth especially low end, it I did love the crunch and top end of the coles..great grooves regardless!
Excellent Form with the Stick Point for Emphasis!
I have a pair of the coles but I do like the sound of the Stager too. A little brighter I think. Thanks for the vid
I just love the Coles… the hats really come alive.
Great comparison!
crispy playing and crispy sound : )
Impressive and smooth playing. Love those tasty fills.. and that left buzz at the end? ... Wow
Coles is the winner for me
Hi Carter......Hello from Colorado! It would be great to hear these bone dry without reverb....
The Stager with the EQ and the Coles without would be my choices
Great comparison. The EQ settings did not do the Coles any justice at the end. it Should've been tweaked as the coles has a different High End response. The EQ does sound great for the Stager, which makes me think the settings were adjusted specifically for that mic. The settings on the EQ are really pushing the Coles into a territory it doesn't want to be in. otherwise great example.
Aaa it was microphone comparison. I should listen once again
I forgot about the mics I enjoyed the groove so much. What mic are those again.?? 🙂😳
The Stager sounds more natural and open in the top end with eq...actually without eq as well.
Not mad about the Coles with Pultec EQ - I think it's too grainy and closed off sounding.. I have the exact same experience when I use my Coles and AML pultec. The Coles sounds much better with a less characterful EQ, IMO. Have you tried your Coles in front of kick? One of my favourite spots for it.
The Stager definitely sounds like a ribbon which gives a 70s sound to your drums without sounding muffled.
Coles for me
I thought the Stager had alot more attack all the way around. I would use that one for my personal tastes
Still one of the best sounding floor toms of all time
Both sound great, but prefer the Coles without the the EQ. Was that just a mono overhead for each recording or did you have a bass drum mic as well ?
I didn't think you could get darker thank the 4038! Good vid, thanks! Do you have the Sr-1A too?
Good video bro!!
Carter just pulled a harry potter spell to enchant us at the end.
But anyway, i really liked the Stager.
Coles - slightly more highs and snare is thicker. Stager - Deeper kick - less hi hat. Less fundamental with snare-- less glue.
I just bought a stereo pair of the Stager's -- got em today, can wait to try them for my rooms and as overheads. Thanks for helping me spend my $ Carter.
What hats and ride?
As usual, CM kills and the drums sound amazing. Specs on kick? Size/model/heads?
YES
Both are great, but I don't hear a big enough difference to pay twice as much for the Coles. Now what I really want is the SR-1A :-) , but that's quite a bit more mula !
Love that little concert tom!
This is sweeeeeet!!
This is Impressive for a single mic setup!
He has a BD mic as far as im concerned.
What mic pre are you using?
The Coles with the EQ. Which is funny because when you compare the Coles to some Earthworks mics in another older video, the Coles was my least favorite.
Just here for his playing...
Coles sounds better (out of the two) without EQ, Stager sounds better with EQ......Any mic, with you playing the pots and pans, is going to be amazing geezer. End of.
agreed
Might also be because the EQ was set up for the Stager though? On my monitors it just sounds like the Coles could have used a milder (less boost, and probably less of the "attenuate" low knob?), possibly wider EQ setting because it was less wooly pre-EQ than the Stager. Just my random guesses.
Where’s that drum rack from?
The Stager does something weird to the snare with the EQ in. Coles is beautifully balanced.
You’re a badass🤙🏼
Can you do a Lesson on polyrhythms
cartermclean.com
90% of his book is polyrhythmic
What converters do you use? UA?

Is that standard rack tom cut down or is it just a snare missing the bottom?
ITs a concert tom. They came that way in the 70s
@@cartermclean oh awesome, I didnt know they did concert toms on the standards! Love that finish.
