- This is the series where I reveal what is inside these pottery moulds I found on Gumtree.

The story goes, I found a listing on gumtree for pottery stuff. When I arrived the seller said 'I have all these pottery moulds would you like them as well?' and I said 'why not'. On the way home, I had the brain child to do a social media video series revealing what each mould is.
The mystery is in the fact that I had no idea what I had said yes to, some of the moulds are labelled and easy to tell but some of them are a little more difficult. The beauty is that all of the plaster moulds surprise you no matter the presentation of labels, titles or identifiable surface inside.
So come join me as I dive into this series and share the mould fun. I would love to hear any information you may have on the moulds and to let me know any stories you have that the moulds remind you of in the comments.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe!

Originally the bees went with a sunflower dish/bowl and the hummingbird with a poppy dish/bowl. I love what you did with these! I put the image from the catalog on my community tab if anyone wants to see it.
I would love to see those
Maybe she'll find that mold!
Didn't a sunflower dish come up before? I remember the comments talking about it being possible to repurpose it as a different flower.
Edit: Mould 91 could work maybe?
@@ystacalden I tried looking because I thought I remembered seeing it but couldn't find it.
@@marysolis4193 There's a Duncan Scioto Mold Catalog I downloaded from the internet that has these in it. It's on page 67.
I love them I think if the hummingbirds actually had worked out they also could have made a really cool Center decoration to a set of wind chimes, hummingbird at the top then big bee then little bee.
YESSSS! A wind chime would be sooooo cute!
Oh, these are gorgeous! Shame about the birds. And imagine if they were on copper stakes instead of wooden? I know that would be expensive. But it would look amazing.
That would be amazing!
It's going to kinda be sad when you finish doing the last mould reveal, this has definitely been a wonderful experience watching each beautiful piece emerged.
it's too bad the mold was so delicate! your choices of colors are so pretty and they turned out PERFECT in the end
I wish you’d find another truckload of vintage molds so this series could go on forever. I’ve never done pottery, but now I fantasize of having a little setup in my garage.
BEES!
Hummingbirds are such scary things actually, conceptually.
The hummingbird really feels like it belongs to a different set, the way it looks coming out of the mould. You've done well in integrating it though
I hope you get more moulds. This series should never end. Everybody needs a little mystery once a week or so. These bees are some of my favorites of the whole lot. And I had never heard of there being blue bees. Wow!
I love your nod to the blue banded bee. I live in WA and it took me 2yrs after moving to an area that has blue banded bees to see one. They were always there, I just wasn't 'seeing them'. Now I adore them! They love my chives when flowering and are in the rosemary too. You'd never mistake them for a blowfly.
Hey Shelby, have you tried that pressured Air pistol you've used in the past?
That's a tricky mold 🤔 but super adorable and beautifully executed 😍❤️
These were really cute! I can see these being very popular with loads of different people. Great job!
Un-bee-leivable . Those humming birds, flapping their wings at to greater rate.?
I love that! “We don’t aim for realistic- we aim for imagination.” It’s a bummer about the hummingbirds.
What are you making today? Birds and the bees. Oh... :D Anyway, is it possible to put something in the beak before pouring, something that will be like armature? Piece of wire or similar? I really don't know just asking.
Ohhh what happens after the 100th reveal?!?!?
What will u be making in your bee- autiful new studio?😊
I wonder how these more delicate sculptural pieces would look with a blue/navy glaze in place of the black? That could make some softer lines in the recesses and give a different look from the black. I love these… it’s a shame that they gave you such trouble because they’re just so lovely. As always, its a tremendous pleasure to watch your creative process.
I love these so much 🥰 the humming birds might have been a pain but they are so beautiful.
Early gang unite!! 97 already! Sorry the hummingbirds were such a chore. They look so glossy.
Oh my goodness I LOVE these so much! They turned out so beautifully!! Many people don't realize that lots of bees are iridescent and sparkly! In Oregon we have a tiny bright green iridescent (like a scarab beetle) native bee and we have a fly that's a black and yellow striped. Haha mimics in nature are great! I was spirited and saddened when I learned that hummingbirds aren't everywhere in the world. They are truly magical!!
So sorry about the birds, but they still turned out awesome!!!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
Hi, I love this series. If you are almost out of moulds to reveal you could always do a "making your suggestions" video from all the ideas people have left on previous videos.
I am in love with the birds and the bees🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
these are so gorgeous and creative! awesome job Shelby 💛🤎💙🤎
Did we just learn all about "The Birds and The Bees" from Shelby? ☺️
PS - I LOVE these!!
I'm sorry about the pain in the beak .....thank you for sharing not only your creativity but also tell us more about your environment, like today the blue-ish bees native to Australia :)
I loved these! Cute little bees and beautiful humming birds 😍😍😍 I love the style of the mould and the interpretation with the antiquing that you did. I'm sorry the bird's beak was so fragile, but the ones you did were wonderful.
I love the way the opalescent glaze pooled, especially on the bees! It highlights the texture in the exact opposite direction from the antiquing, which looks very cool :)
With the hummingbird, it's honestly a surprise that they were modeled with their beaks out like that anyway! Even as thin as it is on the mold, the beak modeled here is actually much thicker and shorter than a real hummingbird's. If you wanted to experiment with this mold, you could try breaking the beak off from the beginning and attaching a piece of wire. I don't know if glaze would want to hold on to metal, but a larger gauge wire would be the right thickness for a hummingbird's beak.
Would using a type of oil or wax help with the hummingbird beak mould parts, so the tiny spots have less porosity, so less sticking and breaking?
I love these! The antiquing really brought out the feathers, and the veins on the bee's wings. I was hoping you would add something shimmery and you did! The way they sit so nicely on a stick, is there some kind of "kiln stick" that you could perch them on for firing?
My 3yo and I watch your videos together every weekend and if I forget she asks for her "Shelfy" videos. It's so sweet🥰
These are so pretty. Maybe before the bisque fire take your broken beak hummingbirds and combine with a flower to make it look like their feeding off nectar. That way the broken end of the beak is inside or disguised within the flower?
I've seen blue banded bees a couple of times, but only zipping past me, not posed on a flower.
I know it'd be expensive, but i'd LOVE to see one of these bees antiqued with the gold shimmer 😍😍
I wonder if you could attach the hummingbirds to a flower on something to make it look like they're eating out of the flower and not worry about the beak?
They are lovely ❤ however if a bee that big came towards me I would run for my. Life lol 😂 just kidding!
"as what a bee would be." That brought me joy. 😊🤗😍🐝
honestly, the glazes on these worked out so well. i think this might be my favourite pieces you have ever done. thank you for doing this
I agree! Never wanted to reach through my screen and grab them like I did these! I love bees and these are so beautiful
These are wonderful!! So cute!!
What is the brand and kind of small kiln you use?
Sad for the difficulty on the hummingbirds I love them. Your painting items as a set is always fun. The antique technique does bring out the textures. Love from the Midwest USA. 💜
Hello! Im from Mexico and I love your videos 🥰🫶🏻
They'd be really pretty in a vase of flowers as a centerpiece on a table.
Those bees would make lovely wind chimes!
I love, love, LOVE how those blue banded bees turned out! They look like precious gems!
OMG how funny!! I just bought this mold a few weeks ago! Unfortunately it broke during shipping but I used mold glue and it worked really well. I got these to put on a bird bath I handbuilt but the hummingbird has been a problem for me as well. Yours turned out beautifully!!
Perhaps pre-moistening the beak so it'll dry about the same time as the rest, or, take some clay and mold it into the beak area then pour the slip.
Bee-autiful Shelby 🐝 thank you 😊
So sad about the birds they are quite beautiful.
USA insomnia for the win! I'm excited I don't have to wait hours to watch this.
Oh, these turned out gorgeous! I love the colors and techniques you chose for the hummingbirds.
I LOVED these! I just love that type of glace!!! And humminbirds and bees ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love the humming birds! It's a shame they are so hard to pour.
I didn't even know about blue bee 🐝 💙 !. Apparently there are différents species that looks all a little different but they are all so special ! Nice to have learn something today
These would make the cutest windchimes!
They are so gorgeous. I'm in love. Espacially with the hummingbird.
They turned out beautifully. I'm sorry the hummingbird was a bit persnickety.
Hey Shelby! Looove these! Just wondering if you were able to share what brand and name that opalescent glaze was? If not I completely understand ☺️
I absolutely love the blue antiquing, I think the colours look marvelous together, especially the mustard yellow, brown and the blue 😍😍
Can you imagine these as Christmas ornaments? When I was little my mother would get these hummingbird ornaments as gifts, I still have one.
This is one of my favorites! Especially the hummingbirds!
Shelby! I love the 🐝s. PLEASE READ THIS: my daughter is nicknamed Becky. I call her “B.” Bee! PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. Make bees for Christmas tree ornaments. You can get alligator clips at the hardware store, and glue them to the bottom of the bee. The bee gets clipped to the tree branch so it looks like it’s sitting there. I MUST HAVE A BEE ORNAMENT FROM YOU. Please make lots next year. I know people would LOVE them. I luv ya, Shelby! Are we doing cupcakes for 100!
The plant steak idea is absolutely adorable! Love watching/listening to your process!
They are really cute.
These are hands down my favorite thing you've made LOVE 💘 ❤ 💕
Question: Is there any reason you can't pull off the side of the mold that has the beak on it first? Would that work better? I know very little about ceramics but I'm just curious! :) BEAUTIFUL work as always!! They turned out so lovely!
Just delightful! I love how you displayed them❤
Absolutely gorgeous bees and hummingbirds. I would say that the hummingbirds are a 1000 bucks each though, for all the trouble you had making them! 😁
Love the hummingbird, never heard of the blue banded bee until now.
I wonder if you open the mold and dampen the beak portion with distilled water?? That might slow down the cracking process?
This series is fantastic and an amazing way to show off these molds. I’ve been following along. I love doing this kind of pottery, if I lived near you, I would be your biggest customer and pupil. These have to be amongst my favourites. I adore that you go the extra steps to get special effects. Great video, thank you 👍🏻🌸😊🌟
How cute! Just in time for spring. I thought of you this week. A friend of mine gave me a bunch of African violet pots. The kind that sit inside each other. They were white with a blue accent. I began washing them since they were all cob webby and realized they were all glazed, not painted! I went to my local pottery store, bought some glazes and reglazed them. There’s about 18 pieces. I’ll get them fired next week, wish me luck. ❤
I would love to see you combine the baby peas onto your sunflower mug I think it would be a really cute combination🥰💖🌸💐🌻🌺🌹🍒🌼🍦
These are beeautiful and I'm glad you're humming right along with your new studio. (I couldn't help myself) I love your videos and am so thrilled for you. If you can't find time to do these videos, I know I would not mind watching you do your Christmas orders.
Have seen ALL your videos. What brand of glaze were you using to give you the iridescence? Love this one too and that you described in detail the twice bisqued process and how you go about glazing. Have been very inspired by your videos and started experiment with making moulds. And finally managed to buy one to make something. Thank you.
If you want to attract the blue banded bees, plant a geisha girl bush. Holy moly, mum had one in her garden (nsw/vic border), and despite having a garden FULL of flowers, it was the geisha girl that always had the blueys on them 😍
How many molds you have left, and what will you do when you run out?
Crossing my fingers 100 isn't the end.
(I hope you sell the ones you don't like as much to make room for new mysteries to try.)
Cuz these are so much fun
I don't know why I thought there wouldn't be videos after last week's new studio tour. This makes me happy! These are soooo cute! Tiny little bees and birds took so much work. You did a great job!
Hi Shelby, I love the bees and hummingbirds. They are fabulous. It’s a shame that you are so close to the end of the 100 moulds. I have sooo enjoyed watching you every week. I shall, of course , keep watching you in your endeavours because I enjoy your work so much x
Up where I live they have found some Murder Hornets that are the size of the big bee 🐝 yikes!
Also, what is the name/number of the opalescent glaze?
Perfect colours
I had to look up different kinds of blue bees, because ADD, and I have to say my fav is the carpenter bees from Malaysia, because it has a shiny black butt and looks like it's wearing a little fuzzy blue jacket
(To preface my question: the only work I've done with pottery was in middle school over a decade ago) would it be possible to pour up the beak, then close it up, let it sit, and then pour the rest? I'm just genuinely curious if that's even possible!
I’m thinking a set of small figures or ornaments, maybe whimsical cats.
Cuuuute! 😍 These are my favorites! (I think I say that every time 😆 but they are all my favorites! Lol)
Very cute. With a gold luster they could make cute christmas ornaments.
Or painted with pastell colours I bet one could make a very sweet mobile put of them.
I would love to see a twist with your antiquing, where instead of just using black or deep brown, you use a darker shade of colour - maybe a deeper shade of what's underneath, or a co-ordinating colour (like a deep purple on blue or pink/red)
It's to bad about the birds, I've always loved hummingbirds and my boyfriend loves bee's, they're beautiful and we both love this ❤
I love the colours you used.
I totally respect your tenacity to keep trying until you got perfect humming birds.
Its very easy to give in after the mould doesn't work after the 3rd attempt.
Great video :)
Can you reglue the 2 birds back together? They'd be cute flying in tandem.
Oh gosh, these are so lovely! Such a shame that the hummingbird was so finicky. I would absolutely love to buy a few hummingbirds for my mom, they are her favorite! Even though we live on the 9th floor smack dab in the middle of a big city, she has two hummingbirds who come up to her little balcony garden all the time.
Blue banded bees love rosemary flowers. My mum always has them hanging out in her rosemary. 💙
Very cute 🥰 🐝 I love the idea of having them as garden decorations m, they look amazing
I love the bright yellow and polka dot piggies. And, I love watching all the way through, not only to learn what goes into your art, but it us so very calming. Thank you for all you do!
Omg I want all of these throughout my garden beds! Stunning!
!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!!!!
It's unfortunate about the hummingbirds, but I actually like the bees better anyway. And I really love that you made them blue.
I wonder if a different recipe for slip, or if you could add something in the mold to reinforce the beak would help? I don't know much about ceramics but I remember in clay sculptures armatures help support delicate stuff.
If any of you are curious about the blue bees like I was, they are called the blue-banded bee. Scientific name Amegilla cingulata.
Such whimsical insects to put in your plants. I hope you are enjoying your new studio.
I do love them all. I would paint the sticks to match the green stems in your garden. Just lovely!!!
I think they would look cute on copper wire rods. They would bounce a bit in the breeze. It’s too bad the humming birds are a bit tricky.could the beak be made a bit thicker by filing out the mould a little with a round thin file.
🐝 Great job👏 Fan from Lynchburg, VA, USA🇺🇸. Let's get our celebratory cupcakes ready for Mould 100 reveal🧁🎉
Are we doing cupcakes? I’m all for that! 🧁
Could you talk more at some point about your Kiln? I've watched the studio tour where you talked about it but I'd love to hear more! Do you like the size? I'm guessing you're going to maybe get a larger one in the new studio but as a hobby potter with a home studio im considering getting one, and i love the size of yours.
...oh a question for you... I see your process in the antiquing with the sponge, can't help but notice again the glaze getting your hands dirty, how easy is it to get them clean again? I have my fair share of using different paints and some come off with no problem while others I had to use a scouring pad and exfoliate hahaha
