Meanwhile Nintendo has most of their staff since the 80s
Nintendo will survive another gaming crash easily
not really true
Japan also has quite solid worker protection laws. It's hard to fire anyone. Like in Germany (and maybe other european countries) You often hear from US companies and maybe Canadian that they just lay off. Lots of contract based work and no protection. Both good and bad depending on the situation to have these laws
@@johansvensson833 compared to Western studios? Japan in general does a good job retaining talent, imagine if Nintendo fired Miyamoto because 1 game didn't sell well, because that's exactly what happens all the time in the west, instead of holding on to talent and refining it they'd rather replace it or buyout a different studio for the IP
@@Arcademan09 a lot of that is due to japanese culture. it doesn't and can't translate over to the west

They're making a remake of a game that was already re-released and was perfect as is.... Tell me you're redundant without telling me. LOL

These game companies need to stop spending 200 million on every single AAA game. "It's expensive to make a game!" *HOW* , we have free tools and it's easier than ever to share resources, how many employees do they have?!
My thoughts exactly I can only think there’s so many people just not doing much or not anything at all
feel like it's a money laundering issue of some kind.
whats the ratio between project managers and developers?
boy do you ignoramuses have it all figured out.
Most of that "expense" is for the executives.
I picked up Visions of Mana before realizing that most staff were laid off by Netease before the launch of that game as well. It's unfortunate that now devs aren't going to see the launch of their game and that's pretty disheartening. It is going to make moral go down and that will effect the games in a negative way as well.
I did always think Studios would try and get projects in the pipeline in advance like for example Preproduction starting on the next project while production is on the current and then they gradually move people across on the next as production wraps on the current.

Luke consistently makes perfect sense in explaining the ins and outs of gaming industry top marks sir
For anyone saying 'this game didn't need a remake', it's essentially just a PC release and PS5 remaster. If you haven't played before and wanted to but didn't have a PlayStation, you can now play it on PC. Thats kinds the point of it.
Internet goofs used to port games into roms for emulators.... For fun. And they were good at it. No upscaling, but you could generally use turbo features... They kinda stopped cause lawsuits from gane companys doin the same thing but worse, and costing tens of millions of dollars.
It also seems to be a remaster. Not a remake.
Everyone been saying the industry needs to crash. Well this is the first sign it's happening.
The early 2030's will be filled with games made by small studios "with devs who worked on X".
Only once that happens will the larger studios begin to re-emerge.
Remember to blacklist publishers from withdrawing your money.
Hey Luke any chance of you talking about Bioware and EA's ATROCIOUS approach to their recent Dragon Age previews, spoiler wise? A lot of the excited community got really angry over how they've been dropping significant spoilers for early and mid-game events/battles/companion backstories, so much so that some have gone on to release "edited" versions of previews to take out the worst bits, or are refusing to watch any preview material past the initial reveal in June. I wonder how all this looks from a more casual fan's perspective, and how in general what you think the responsibility is of studios and publishers to not spoiler things to what extent when trying to build hype.
I’m surprised anyone WANTS to work on the video game industry as a dev considering you’ll probably lose your job no matter what unless you go full indie
The main problem is that execs are convinced that the more money you invest the more money it brings you, when the reality is that the consumers' money is limited and most people will choose something relatively meaningful rather than bland slop
Thats why Nintendo is just so profitable. Their games have a much lower budget but we all know they're made with quality and fun in mind instead of graphics and outsell most if not all AAA UE4-5 titles 10to1 so profit margins are much higher. They have over $11B in revenue this year with 7K employees. Meanwhile Ubisoft has over 21K employees and their revenue this year is $1.6B.
Nintendo really is a big middle finger ti other companies, I love it. Not that they don’t their fair share of bs
@@sagelink2 I’ve been saying this for years! People keep talking about CEO salaries and other such nonsense and I’m sitting here looking at superfluous game design wondering how much that noise cost the studio.
Maybe if they made Until Dawn 2 instead of a remake of a game that everyone remembers every story beat of, they wouldn't have to do this.
Everyone right considering theres billions who havent played the game lmao you literally apart of the 5% at most and thats pushing it
Im sure if Until Dawn wasn't a PlayStation exclusive and just a general video game for all consoles, we probably would've gotten a sequel. However, with PlayStation having control over Until Dawn, they prevented Supermassive Games from making a sequel.
There’s obviously solid talent at that studio but was a remaster of such a recent game really the best use of resources? It seems like a top level bad decision.
And Nintendo still have the same dev teams
Thats why their games are so good🔥

Since the AAA market is getting so risky for those who works on those games, I wonder if a massive move to Indy/AA games would/should happen.
I think this isn’t just a games industry issue but it’s been really prevalent in the games industry
Laying off before the game even comes out. That's some faith in their product.
Sounds like they were temperary hires
I wonder how, of course some character design changes would be needed, Concord might have been as a like Call of Duty big single player Guardians story and then some solid MP (not team shooter) on top.

We are edging ever closer to algorithm based interim staffing, even in a creative field like game design.
I was laid off from my first job in the industry right before our game launched more than 15 years ago. This isn't anything new, and it still sucks.

Helldivers worked because it didn’t take itself seriously, was funny, was the lightest lover service game out there, and had memes carrying it on to great success. But it still suffered from the same problems most live service games have.
I was just going to say, that how can you get the best out of your staff creatively when everyone is terrified on losing their jobs? Security. Hard to think if your in survival mode all the time. So many bad decisions being made in the AAA industry. it's heartbreaking to see so much money wasted, burning out talent, etc. AAA has become extremely risky in the way of trying to play it safe all the time. Yes games are expensive to make, however leadership is the real problem. All the executives continue to fail upwards and I hate it. Don't forget that nobody is too big to fail.
"The thing is, Bob, it's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. It's a problem of motivation, all right? Now if I work my ass off and Initech ships a few extra units, I don't see another dime; so where's the motivation? ...That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled; that, and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired."
That movie is so quotable in life....
Going to be nice re-experiencing on PS5 😊
Can you imagine the amount of great or awesome games we would have today if we had less live service games/mobile games and more single player games, or just full fully fledged games like we had in the 360 era
"Made redundant" is code these days for AI is replacing the position...
Yes until dawn does need a Remake
"I don't want to be milked for everything I'm worth" Luke starting no-nut November early.
If you do not fire peple if they do a bad job. More people won't care about doing a good job or being good at their job if there are no consequences.
It's crazy to me that Until Dawn gets a remake while Bloodborne is completely ignored year after year. Sony sucks ass.
How many times now have gamers told a dev every step of the way " We don't want this."? And the company responded with " That just a small group of hater. Or bigot. Or far right." ? These nuts grossly over estimate how many people think like them.
Damn. they are not even waiting for the game to launch
Main development is complete and the game is in final polish phase so the cuts have started. Going to be interesting to see how buggy this is upon release since last minute bugs are unlikely to be addressed.
Sony mandating PC gamers to link to a PSN account. Why would I trust Sony with my personal information when they are far and away the worst when it comes to getting hacked and losing customers credit card and personal information? A Sony one and done game, maybe. Sony live services can GDIAF.
To be fair this is almost the same as every film, tv, and animation studio around the world.
I would love to know what the market looks like for games currently. It would be interesting if overall spending on games is up YoY but spending on AAA games is down.
Layoff's are common these days nothing surprising to hear about that in 2024.
Just tighting up the overhead 😅
Looks like they are hiring these people as contractors instead of full time employees and once their part is done their contract is terminated.
If you work for a corporation you are a CONTRACTOR whether you accept it or not.
it’s important to remember this isn’t Supermassive. this is the dev team that did the remaster. Still a bummer, but just wanted to share that.
Looks like games production is heading toward the same model as films where studios hire people per project rather than permenent staff.
You do realize studios hire contractually in this industry and once the project they hire for is done they cut the people loose? What are they supposed to do? Keep every person they hire even when there’s nothing to work on?
The Solution is too cut the executive’s salaries drastically! They do Almost Nothing. The staff makes the products…
Honestly im just bummed that the remaster changed the whole visual style and tone of the game. Sure it looks "prettier" i guess, but the cold blue darkness of the original has been lost.
When I was under threat of being furloughed during the lockdowns I developed my skills in order to make myself invaluable to my employer. That these people are “redundant” tells me they were never all that valuable in the first place and easily discarded.
I hate to see people lose their jobs, but this game didn't need to happen. Remakes are the laziest form of game development these days. No creativity, it rarely pays off, and nobody was asking for this.
Off topic I know this probably won't get attention but if you could talk about Test drive unlimited solar crown in one of your next videos. It's another game that needs to be talked about.
And I thought Silent Hill 2 remake was unnecessary
They can remake "Until Dawn," which nobody wants and which will net them very little profit, but they still refuse to release Arkham Origins for the PS4, something they have done for every other entry in the Arkham franchise and which people actually want to happen. Good thinking, Sony,
Some will land on high profile indie team
Why did they do a Until Dawn remake? That game isn't even that old. So many other games deserve a remake.
@@homebass3426 it’s almost 10 years old now.
@@chase-2200 The ps4 was out by then. The graphical difference between ps4 and ps5 isn't large enough to warrant a remake (imo, which is why I said it hasn't been long enough)

Recent media is nothing but sequels, spin-offs and remakes. Very few have fresh ideas.
@@homebass3426 meh, I kinda like the idea of a remake. It would give me another reason to play again. I think remakes are usually needed, unless the game is technologically very outdated.
The only part about this remake I care about is a PC version, other than I don't give a shit about that they remake it. Atleast they said they add some new extra scenes which is always good if done right, it can add more to the lore.
So much self-deception from the money men and the heads of these game studios. (see Bungie)

We have an 8 year delay for games. We'll get tones of crap coming out soon, because companies are so slow in development now.
70€ is waaaay too much. The sales are gonna flop.
I'll pick it up when it's $10 like I did with the PS4 version.
Is it confirmed these aren’t just contracts that aren’t being renewed? PlayStation tends to hire through contracts on top of the employees in the studios.
This game seems like the most unneeded remake possible. It still looks good and it isn't much of a game in the first place.
Surely they’re looking at games like black myth wukong and Elden ring shadow of the erd tree and thinking “hey, we don’t need live service, we just need a good game, then it’ll sell well” - I’d rather they bring back paid dlc post launch like cod map packs and separate dlc addons like Alan wake American nightmare than carry on with these subpar games with the mantra “but look, all content post launch is free, but make sure you buy our skins otherwise we’ll cancel post-launch support in 9-12 months!”
That's what I've being saying ....but yes this is 💯 facts
Many video game companies also pay higher executives way too much (while giving too much credit on shady stakeholders) so it creates inequality within the business and cuts are made on fundamental tools (and staff) needed to create great quality games. Working in the VG industry kind of feels like the orangutan meme trying to build something with one nail and a hand saw at the moment.
all companies do
Not enough pre-orders - good.
Its just a commission project.
There’s not 12 live service games in development at PlayStation. Concord, Helldivers 2, the cancelled TLoU and Spiderman online games. So there should be 8 left. Including Fair Games and the Horizon live service. So there should be 6 we haven’t heard oh yet. Oh boy. Lets hope the majority get canned before they even get announced
@@jazzifizzleno16 Sony said they canceled half of them, didn't they?
holy sony was going real deep with live service
Don't blame executives only, there are a lot of mediocre designers there. Now it's just a survival of fittest. The best companies with the best specialists in their fields will survive. Ballistic Moon probably doesn't have approved project in their pipeline that's why there are layoffs there and doesn't matter that it's happening before launch of remake.
I mean, it's not a surprise that this happened, especially to this company, i mean, just look at the lineup of games after until dawn. It's been downhill. even there latest game has been reviewed mixed. Their stories haven't been great and also have been buggy.
My theory is as the gaming generation grows older, they become more conscious of their spending and are looking more into 40hr+ narratives than dealing with people in Co-op or MMOs. We're just tired mentally and physically and just wanna sit back and fucking enjoy a damn game.
and the issue if they do not buy the devlopers will not make games for them
I platinumed the original so I loved it. But I gotta ask, who was asking for this remaster? Devs and publishers need to start listening. This might sell well and hope it does just clueless imo
These people were paid for the work they performed . I’m tired of hearing about how people have to like the product they’ve produced because they worked hard on it. These same people take no issue with complaining about their Starbucks order being wrong even though the barista worked hard to produce it. It’s not the product they wanted and they’re allowed to express that; just like we’re allowed to express our dissatisfaction with games.
I fundamentally don't understand why they made this remake. I'm guessing it was to train the team for a sequel but it clearly went horrifically wrong - if they are now being axed, I guess so much for the sequel. The game might be technically more advanced but it ends up looking stylistically worse, and destroys the game's night time setting. Did they just read the word Dawn, and not Until. In the end, the game ends up looking adjacent to the original, different and not for the better.
I agree and we should go way further. IMHO we have to remove Mobile Games from game industry calculations and from the setting of goals for console and PC games. The mobile game market is mostly just India and China, two markets Western studios can't break into, even if they try really hard, because especially China will have their big companies, like Tencent and NetEase, make a similar game which will get a way louder PR and by default has more platform rights than any Western project ever will have in those markets. So why gaslight each other in the West by always including Mobile into Game Industry calculations for the West?
The only reason people hold onto Mobile Gaming for industry calculations, in my opinion, is that some big games are also on mobile, even when they are originally PC games like Genshin Impact or Fortnite. But that's all a giant self-gaslighting in my opinion. Unless a Western studio truly finds a way to break into the Indian and Chinese Mobile Game markets. Which i highly doubt will ever happen. And until then including Mobile Game calculations is irrelevant and a complete falsification of industry numbers.
This is not a rant against India or China, i love both countries and their cultures and history. Mahatma Gandhi is my hero and Lao Tzu my guide. And i welcome China in the traditional Western game market with Black Myth Wukong, my personal GOTY for this year. We Westerners just have to stop always wanting everything, because we can't have everything! Nobody can have everything!
"Made redundant" can only mean..."replaced by AI".
It’s still baffling to me how these execs really have no idea of how their industry works and the difference of spending between demographics.
There's plenty of IP'S that haven't even seen any attention for DECADES, they went out of business remaking a game that didn't need it, don't feel a shred of sympathy.
Larian Studios didn’t do that with their devs and look at what they made. Just saying
Gamers should rise up and not buy the game now. The people got laid off already so they got their money for their job, so we shouldnt give the greedy asshole company any money.
A huge problem with these companies are the devs
Well that just makes me even less encouraged to buy this game.
Is it time for game devs to unionise? Because these executives have fired an insane amount if people in the last 2 years and it doesn't seem to be slowing down
This is just Depressing News man. I preferred “Until Dawn” over ALL those other copycats that came after it. It just felt Finished and more thought out. Goddamnit🤦🏾♂️
All they needed to do is just update the game for ps5.
They are about to lose more as most including myself are not buying another $70 game for graphical enhancements.
This should of been at most a $20 upgrade
This game didn't need a remake.. it still looks fine. Why do they keep wasting money on such stupid projects. If anything just put out an upscaling patch.. but they probably think it's an easy double dip for more $$$.
