    The most popular version of story about the Wawel dragon says a young shoemaker came out with an idea to fill a calf skin with sulfur and leave it as bait. The dragon ate it, felt it burning from inside, drank nearly all the water form the river in an attempt to quench the thirst and finally burst into pieces when it couldn't drink any more.

    • @RichardCodes
      @RichardCodes 5 лет назад +7

      Yeah I heard that. The king told whoever could rid the city of the dragon could marry his daughter, the shoemaker who was from poor social standing killed the dragon and married the princess

    Hey, a fun fact about the dragin's lair for you: in the middle ages a brothel operated there and teh stairs you went through were a half-secret passage made for the king and courtiers so they wouldn't have to get wet on the way xd the dragon story's far older tho

    2:20 is a Baszta Sandomierska (defensive turret/tower), and the Gate is Brama Bernardyńska (Bernardine Gate). The building covered in Ivy (not poisonous one) are Austrian barracks, were soldiers of Austro-Hungarian Empire were stationed when Krakow was under Austrian rule.
    3:37. Those big boats (or barges) are actually an afloat restaurants. As for tours on Wisła (Vistula), at 3:25 you can see boats on the left. There is were you find a starting point for river trips down and up the river.
    4:40. Kings lived Wawel, Presidents resided in Warszawa. And under Austrain rule Kraków was surrounded by multiple forts , it was basically a City fortress. The sad point is, those forts had guns pointed as much outwards as also inwards.
    5:41 You can see a golden copula at the side of the Cathedral. At the breakout of WWII, when German army has advanced onto the city, the citizens poured a pitch over those golden plates, turning it black. Thanks to that action this copula has been left untouched to this day.
    6:02 Those are ruins of old castle village, that was inside castle walls. There was old chapel there included. This area in older ages included blacksmith, stables, bakery, granary... all subsidiary building that was necessary for fulfilling basic daily needs.
    In fact, the correct shot from the castle courtyard is not shown here at all. At 5:03 is a map shown. Yellow dot should be where you were standing, outside actual Royal Castle. Either you haven't take any shots of courtyard... or didn't walk to it at all... I hope you did walk inside, cos if you don't... you have missed a bit.
    The actual gate to the caste courtyard is behind you Danegar at 5:44, next to the cathedral wall, on the right from Danegar and half hidden behind arcades.
    About Grota Smoka (Dragons Cave). it is said (in rumors and hush tone), that this is a way that Polish Kings were bringing lovers to the castle, far from the prying eyes.
    The dragon statue is gas operated. It blew fire. You have to pay for it by sending sms to the number shown on a plaque at the base of the statue.
    The dragon legend. Not exactly like that. The dragon liked cattle and sheep, true. But it was not a Prince, Kings son, but a shoemaker Littletwine (Szewczyk Dratewka) that got an idea to saw a sulfur filling into a sheep carcass and feed it to the dragon. The dragon ate the sheep and become so thirsty that it drank and drank so much that he has trouble with moving, and then the shoemaker slaw it with a shoemaker needle.

    The legend of the Wawel dragon (the version I know): The king offered his daughter in marriage to whomever can slay the ferocious man-eating dragon. A young cobbler (think shoes not pie) gutted a sheep, filled it with sulfur, sewn it back up (trade skills) and then offered it to the dragon as a bait. After gulping the sheep, the dragon felt burning in its stomach, which made it thirsty. It started drinking water from the Vistula river to quench its thirst, and kept drinking until it burst into pieces.
    It's kind of a flip side of the Cinderella story, where a working class tradesman gets rewarded for his ingenuity and bravery by marrying a princess. : )

    That made me laugh when Stacey's lenses stayed dark in the cave - happens to me too as I have that type of lens for my glasses! I was telling one of our Polish friends about your Krakow vlogs as she comes from there. She is 60 now so remembers Poland under Soviet rule. She said how much Poland has rejuvenated since independence - literally transformed. I''m really liking what I see in Poland and your videos are truly capturing the atmosphere and character of the place (as always).

    Cool video guys :) The cave underneath the castle was also a brothel and a pub and a thieves dev in various times in history. It also helped some nobles to run from the castle during the warring periods :) The site where this castle is located is the eldest connected with Cracow, around Xth century. There was a small fortification with a few houses at the very beginning and then it was growing a city around it. There is so much to tell about this place, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

    Hi! i'm so glad you liked the castle :) And so glad you liked Kraków as well, my city :D But the real thing about the dragon cave is that the marks on the walls inside, looks like the marks from "dragons" claws... So that's the reason from where the name of this cave came, but for the real they/re a marks from Knights swords. The caves (yep plural because there used to be multiple caves under the castle), were a King's "Night clubs". He was drinking there with his Knights, people.. they were bringing him Ladies... And sometimes the Knights were fighting here about ladies... so that's from where the marks on the walls came :D that's the real story about the cave and the "Dragon" :D

    • @EdgardCastro
      @EdgardCastro 6 лет назад +2

      I went there yesterday, you pay 10 bucks to get in and the beers were from 6-18 zl. They have 3 sizes of beer, 200, 300 and 500ml. Since I wanted to taste different beers before getting hammered, I just went with the 200ml which were about 6zl each. Think I spent total of 60zl including food and was enough booze for me. :D

    1. The "Tobacco Place" was a factory of cigarettes and cigars and was operational for 125 years until 2002. The name "Dolnych Młynów", means " of the Lower Mills".
    2. The vine-covered buildings on the Wawel Hill were built by the Austrians in the 19th century and have little to do with the original castle.

      Ocodo That is right and it is built during partitions of Poland in XVIII/XIX century. Austrians use to have a military hospital there. It is not even a part of a castle but "added later" buildings which simply stayed there after the fall of Austro-Hungarian Empire.
      The main castle firstly was gothic and later in XV century was rebuilt in a renesaince style. Worth to see from inside and outside.

    The legend about dragon is a little bit different especially the end. The man who slays dragon was name Dratewka and he was a shoemaker. He stuffed sheep with sulflur, dragon ate it. Sulflur start to burn dragon from the inside so the beast went to the river and was drinking until it blew.

    President?? It's a polish kings castle only. President lived in the kings castle but in Warsaw in the times of the Second Republic. It's quiet because you didn't walk into the Castle actually. In the castle is a beautiful Italian courtyard and inside cathedral are tombs of polish kings. You missed so much :(

  • @MariaElena51185

    Dragon myths are exactly that...myths, not true about Dragons all being a nuisance, etc. Man messed that up as Dragons are natural protectors and defenders of the earth and humans who love them. So, love the Dragons, as they are returning!
