    I think a reason that some of the tweaks you made didn't have as noticeable effect as you would have thought was because there are separate wet/dry sliders for both the grain controls section and for the plugin as a whole. Even after you adjusted the main wet/dry to fully wet, you were still getting 50% dry signal, which made it less clear what exactly each of the knobs were doing. Great video, though.

    The sound design sessions tip is great! Definitely takes pressure away from feeling I have to create a whole track by a certain time.

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  3 года назад

      Yeah it really is helpful to work that way. The hardest thing is getting comfortable with composing a song with less than ideal sounds in place.
      I try to see my song writing times in a similar way to sketching out an illustration or design. It's going to look ugly and rough, because it's supposed. And that's ok, but can be so hard to be comfortable with haha!
      Thanks for the sub by the way!

      It's a really good plugin. I still keep going back for it, for so many reasons. Lately, I've been using their delay presets whenever I want a creative sounding delay.
      If you want to compare it to something similar, check out Arturia's Efx Fragments. It's another granular effects plugin. It's great as well, I would even say a little easier to use than Portal. If you're interested here's a vid all about Fragments: ruclips.net/video/CR8qaEZCGYI/видео.html

      Hey! Thanks for the kind words. Little known fact about me is that I’m a dad. Which means that I barely have time to take a shower most days. So for now, live streaming is off the table. What I find that’s doable in this season is making videos around reviews and tutorials. Right now those are simple enough to do well. But maybe when my kid(s) need less of my attention, I’ll happily start to venture into different video formats.

    great vid mate. love that the song examples you're making are actually really good too. dumb questions as im pretty new to plugins and looking for black friday stuff. which do you prefer, portal or quanta? seems like i enjoyed the sounds you were making in your quanta vid more with that iglooghost feel. looks like they do different things, but could that iglooghost example be similarly achieved in portal or could the sounds in this vid here be achieved in quanta?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! Glad you're liking the examples from the videos. And get ready to find dive into the world of plugins. It's great.
      Iglooghost is doing some great work. Here's how I would describe the difference between the two.
      They both utilize granular synthesis. Quanta is a granular synthesizer (an instrument), Portal is a granular synthesis effect (you run other instruments into it).
      If you're new to plugins i would recommend Quanta. It's simpler and you'll have more control. I think quanta is easier to wrap your head around. You can get Iglooghost textures and sounds with both though.

    hi great video, can we use portal for live shows or it have latency/ cpu overload?

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  9 месяцев назад +1

      Great question, latency and CPU usage is really low. I just did a quick test by placing like 10 Portals on an audio track and there was no latency and CPU load was quite low for having 10 instances of Portal. I also tried running Portal through a Kontakt library and same thing, zero- to-low latency and low CPU usage.

    I have portal, I really want to like it, but then get this instant sense of relief when I remove it from my sound. It just makes things sound weird, maybe it’s good for everything but mainstream pop lol

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  7 месяцев назад

      I know what you mean, and it’s one issue I came across when I first used Portal. What might help is using Portal for Ear Candy. When Portal is the focus of a song, it doesn’t like to fit in a lot of use cases, but I find that if it’s used to create weird interesting sounds in the background, it becomes a lot more fun and successful to use. I hope you have more luck that way. Thanks for watching!

      @@ThisIsOnesto I did gather that, then i just found it annoying to have to find a way to always make it work. then i slowly just forgot about it. I really like its concept and all, but i tend to find that all these clever, modulating plugins are never for mainstream pop.

    Hey brotha. Can you tell me how to export the presets I’ve made to make my own preset pack? It’s driving me crazy

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  Год назад +1

      Yeah that can be annoying, here's what I would do.
      Open up Portal and press the save button. The window that pops up should show you where your user presets are located.
      From there I would find that folder again outside of your DAW and then drag out or do whatever you want with your preset files.
      This is a round about way, but right now there's not an official way to export presets inside of Portal that I know of.
      Hope this helps.

    Thank you for the video man ! I have a beginner's question : How can I assign the preset movements to my modwheel, or to my midi modulation (or any other way)
    so I can basically "record" the changes permanently ? You know what I mean ? Cause right now I'm just playing with the mouse and moving the dots, but I can't figure out how to use it in my tracks... The same question goes for Signal, Substance, Movement, etc...

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  3 года назад

      Thanks for watching! That's a good question. I just checked in Portal itself and it looks like you aren't able to assign these parameters within the plugin. But maybe try right clicking any of the macros or knobs in portal and seeing is an option appears for assigning to a knob.
      If that doesn't work you'll need to assign the Portal parameters (to your mod wheel or midi controller knobs) through your DAW. That looks a little different for every DAW, but it's usually quite easy and one of those essential things to know about.
      Hope that helps!

  • @sevens3383
    @sevens3383 8 месяцев назад

    Why are you using presets

    • @ThisIsOnesto
      @ThisIsOnesto  8 месяцев назад +3

      I use presets for a few reasons. When it comes to a deep plugin like Portal, I use presets to quickly get me to a starting point that I like. Once I find a preset I like, I'll tweak a few controls to see if I can make it better.
      Another reason why I love presets is that I know someone has spent their time, effort, and applied their expertise to a tool that's often brand new to me. If someone wants to pass on their help, I'll gladly take it.
      What are your thoughts about using presets?

    • @sevens3383
      @sevens3383 8 месяцев назад

      I think it's alright to use them, but not to demonstrate an understanding of the VST and especially to not teach people how to use it. I'm just being honest, but I think it's a waste of time learning from people who use presets in their demonstration.
      We can do that on our own time. As content creators, why would we want to learn from someone who uses Other peoples' work as your own demonstration?
