    F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896 - 1940)
"The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic novel set in the Jazz Age of the 1920s. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, who moves to Long Island and becomes neighbors with the mysterious and wealthy Jay Gatsby. Gatsby is known for his lavish parties, but few know much about him or his past. As Nick becomes closer to Gatsby, he learns that Gatsby is deeply in love with Daisy Buchanan, Nick's cousin, who lives across the bay with her husband, Tom Buchanan.
The novel explores themes of ambition, love, and the American Dream. Gatsby's immense wealth and extravagant lifestyle are revealed to be part of his effort to win back Daisy, who he met and fell in love with before going to fight in World War I. Despite his success and attempts to recreate the past, Gatsby's dream is ultimately unattainable.
The story culminates in tragedy when Tom exposes Gatsby's dubious background and criminal connections, leading to a series of events that result in Gatsby's death. Through the tragic arc of Gatsby's life, Fitzgerald critiques the moral decay and empty pursuit of pleasure in a society obsessed with wealth and status. Nick, disillusioned by the experience, returns to the Midwest, reflecting on the corruption and loss he witnessed.
