    Re same sex marriages in Thailand: One pitfall for same sex marriages in Thailand is if the relationship breaks down, a divorce is desired and the couple are no longer residents of Thailand. If the couple are residing in a jurisdiction that does not recognize same sex marriage, that jurisdiction is unlikely to recognize same sex divorce resulting in the couple being stuck married to each other. This was a problem for Americans who got married in Canada but moved to the States, separated and could not get divorced in the US and no longer met residency requirements for divorce in Canada. Eventually the Canadian divorce laws changed to allow a divorce in these circumstances despite lack of residency if the couple were married in Canada and could not divorce in the US (or other repressive States). I am not sure if the Thai government included this in their divorce legislation. It is horrible that same sex couples must contemplate divorce when getting married but this can cause some very real problems down the line if not considered.

    Cool, a forecasting website. Did they predict the current rise? If so, have they been right more than once in a row? Not saying I know what's going to happen, but I *am* saying no one else does either. Didn't you report one of a major Thai bank's (forget which one) analysts predicting support at 32.5 just two days ago? Already been below that today lol. (I'm looking at $/B so the chart goes down.)

      @jay.rhoden Месяц назад +2

      To be honest, it's kind of entertaining to watch people think they can predict what any currency will be valued at in a few years time from now. Certainly it's possible to have a vague general idea based on historical trends, but to print out actual numerical projections? Lol

    Trying to forecast currencies to 2 decimal places is a bit silly. The Thai Baht, which is a fiat currency, has kept pace with gold, which is money, since April. The $USD (fiat) on the other hand, has plunged in value against gold (money). When a stock market bust arrives, probably next year, folks will flock to the $USD, thinking that it is a safe haven.

All of that mud that’s inundated Chaing Mai, Chaing Rai etc is in fact top soil that held the mountain area together, that to me renders the mountain areas as having poor nutrients etc and leaves many trees and boulders without ground support. I wonder if this is being talked about yet?

    They should lower the 65.000 baht income requirement for visas based on retirement now, since the Thai baht is so strong. A lot of foreigners are not covering that anymore, falling under that threshold.

    • @timnewtontoday

    • @sarlina1
      @sarlina1 Месяц назад +1

      @@timnewtontoday No. But I have mentioned it for years (as a visa agent), so it's not a new idea from my point of view. However, this time Thai baht seems to remain strong for a much longer time, so it is more probable that it will actually be considered this time. We will see 😊 I can also mention that Norwegian krone NOK (and the other Scandinavian currencies), were around 6 baht to 1 krone 20+ years ago. Today it is only 3.07 baht. Cut in half. But the 65.000 baht requirement has been steady all those years.

      @@timnewtontoday Visa agents are not complaining, it means more customers, but I feel for those who will now go below that threshold, and need our help to get their extensions. It gets more expensive, since they can no longer do it themselves. We will see more of these cases in the coming months and year(s), if Thai baht stays this strong, unless they lower the threshold.

    Blue backlighting looks very nice and your latest shirt is awesome. Keep up the good work Tim, you're a great source of News and opinion.
    Incidentally, it remains a little wet in certain parts of Chiang Mai city and suburb, mainly due to release of excess water from the Mae Ngat dam. Our brilliant hydrologists deferred release Wednesday night as Ping river peak flood waters were due around midnight. With the Ping levels stabilised yesterday morning (Thurs), the sluice gates were opened and even worse flooding now prevails. In part, it's due to the irrigation canals directing water to already flooded and saturated areas. We're seeing levels in Mae Hia rise to over 500mm in previously dry areas to over 1200mm in those already pre-flooded. Brilliant engineering fellas!
