    I think you're being a little harsh on Mean Streets. It probably should not be on this list. There are definitely source limitations, which is no fault of the disc, and the color timing concerns are bogus. This restoration was completed by Criterion and Second Sight. Both transfers are exactly the same. When the negative reviews started coming, Second Sight was very quick to clarify (something Criterion should have done themselves). All prior home video releases were never approved by Scorcese and were NOT accurate. This restoration referenced not one but TWO archived prints: one from The Academy and one of Scorceses personal archive. Both prints have similar color values and were used for the new grade. This is an excellent restoration for what the source is. It was never going to look like Lawrence of Arabia.

      No I agree with you. It’s not bad and I still think it’s the best the film has ever looked. I put it on the list because there is a lot of disappointment with the releases and I understand why there would be because it does look different from previous releases. I think it’s similar to how people feel about changes to the 3 colors trilogy and in the mood for love. I my self wasn’t totally disappointed and actually think it’s god but expected it to be a little better. I can’t sit here and say it’s a great transfer though. It’s definitely ok though.

      I spent $6,000 on home theater system this year with that b.s. Best Buy Tech crap. 8 months later and one of the speakers fails and they want me to haul a tower speaker instead of sending someone to pick it up like when they delivered it.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад

      @ricogomez4020 Thats crazy. They should just send over someone with the geek squad van unless they stoped doing that too.

      It took 4 csr on the phone just to someone to come look at it. Then when he arrives and he sees he can't fix it calls manufacture and tell they can send a part over. Now the tech calls his boss so I can ask for them to just take the current speaker and drop off a new one and that way you can take your time waiting for a part and then fixing it. He said no. So I ask him what am I paying this Total Tech membership for? He says you bring the speaker in and will fix it with the part for free. But he doesn't know how long that will take. SO instead, I called speaker manufacture and had the part mailed to me and I fixed it myself.@@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia

      Just based on what I see with my eyes is that there was color timing and grading changes, It’s actually very obvious and noticeable. I don’t think it’s a bad transfer overall, It’s just a little disappointing. It’s still the best movie has ever looked and i’m not sure it’s possible to look better but I also can’t sit here and lie and say it’s an amazing transfer because it’s just not. It’s also my opinion and I completely understand and respect if you disagree me.

    Oof, bad take on Mean Streets. It looks great to me. The film stock wasn't as great as Scorsese other movie. Apparently the boy ray was wrong and that's what people were judging it on.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад

      I actually didn’t compare it to a blu ray. I compared it to a few other sources that all matched up and only the 4K had the new color timing. I’m not really saying it’s a bad 4K in fact I think it’s good it’s just disappointing because it could have been much better in my opinion.

    I also like the Rocky v Drago cut, but think Stallone’s decision to reformat it to 2.35:1 was a huge mistake. I don’t believe it was originally shot with this aspect ratio in mind, and it feels cramped and artificially forced into frame quite often.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад

      I’ll have to go back and look at that and see what the original aspect ratio was. I was watching the making of doc for that and it seems like he was giving direction for what he wanted and wasn’t getting any push back so I can see that happening for sure.

    • @1165mac
      @1165mac 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Original aspect was 1.85:1. 2.35:1 forced Stallone to “pan and scan” vertically to capture the image he desired. Watch the final fight in both aspects. To me it, and the entire film, works so much better in the original aspect, because it was originally shot for it.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад

      @1165mac Im going to check that out. I thought we were past the “pan and scan” days now that tvs can fit what ever aspect ratio the film was filmed in. But I guess if you have a desired image you’ll have to stretch it.

    • @1165mac
      @1165mac 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia Apparently, Stallone wanted the new cut to have a more epic widescreen quality even at the expense of losing some of the top and bottom of the original image. I don’t get it. I love the 2.35:1 aspect and even have a 2.35:1 projection screen, but not when a film isn’t originally photographed with this aspect in mind. James Cameron made famous the Super 35 format by filming in an open matte 1.85:1 aspect to maintain sharpness from edge to edge, but leaving plenty of room at the top and bottom of the frame to ultimately print it at 2.35:1. It works great, if this was your plan all along. Rocky IV was released theatrically in 1.85:1 and comparing it to Rocky v Drago convinced me that it was never planned to reformat it to 2.35:1. Too much of the essential image is cropped and it feels very cramped to me. Thank you for your informative and entertaining videos!

    I thought Weird Science had a fine 4k transfer. It was grain heavy, but I’m not personally a grain hater so was fine with it.
    It was in ‘20th and 21st movies’ top 10 list for 2023.
    I couldn’t hold out for the Second Sight Mean Streets release, so the Criterion Mean Streets is arriving with me here in the UK this week. Will temper my expectations with regard to the picture quality.
    The Firm would have been on my list, that was a pretty mediocre transfer. The worst looking disc for me though was American Graffiti. It was terrible and the sound wasn’t much better either, so it got sold on eBay.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад

      I saw that he had that on his list and he’s one of my favorite Physical media channels so we will just have to disagree on that. The only thing is I don’t consider it a bad release I just think there was a lot more potential and some of those grainy scenes were just to grainy and I thought it took away from the scam overall. I’m still happy to own it just a little disappointed.
      That’s the reason American Graffiti is on this, Not one person said it was a good scan. Thats really a shame too because I wanted to revisit it and thought the new 4K would be a good opportunity.

    • @benpascall4297
      @benpascall4297 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia as a 44 year old, I remember watching Weird Science a lot growing up on Tv and from recollection, it’s always been a very grainy looking movie - especially in some of the opening shots. I think it’s inherent with the way the movie was filmed. I can’t think of a reason why Arrow would add grain to a source and I think if they’d used DNR to scrub the grain, it would have resulted with heavier criticism. I guess it’s a choice of choose your poison with this release.
      American Graffiti actually has a good review from Movie Collector, who has a great RUclips channel. He is extremely knowledgeable of the look of different film stock and argues that the look is consistent with the stock used to shoot this film. I normally agree with his views, but in this instance I can only vote with my eyes and if that’s how it’s supposed to look and sound, it’s certainly not for me. Even on the sound, I found it really inconsistent and recall hearing some very strange echo effects to voices, which was off putting. The picture to me looked like heavy dnr was applied and it was overly dark and colours looked dull and faded.

    • @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia
      @LetsTalkEntertainmentMedia  8 месяцев назад +1

      @benpascall4297 That’s what I’ve heard is that it’s overwhelmed with DNR. That kind of lines up with how George Lucas has liked his previous releases to look. I can’t argue if that’s how they like something to look it’s their right but I agree you have to use your eyes and if you don’t like it then you don’t like it. Some people like a ton of DNR I personally don’t. It can be used to fix certain things but to apply to the whole film and eliminate all grain is just insane to me. It makes the skin look so fake and waxy.
