I have to admit I was unaware of JD Mcpherson until this. Thanks for the Rundown and, mostly, thanks for turning me on to a player I should have been listening to all along. Love what you're doing John! Please keep it going!
I agree with every one that mentions that this was the best run down. But I also gotta say that it's also the first time I heard mention of an interviewee that learned from watching this great show. Real nice!
Great “Young” player, great band, great songs, well versed in equipment and how to properly use it, great knowledge of history!! What else could you ask for in a player?!?!
Just saw JD open up for Robert Plant and Alison Krauss in Austin, TX (and he played in the band). ...came found while searching for JD's rig when I saw him playing the TK Smith custom on the Plant Krauss show.
JD and Jimmy Sutton are the most exciting thing that ever happened to rock'n'roll in the last 20 years. Vast knowledge of the original rock'n'roll/rhythm & blues, superb songwriting and very clever mixture of the classic '50s sound and "new" stuff. He likes everything I love, from Mickey Baker to Dinosaur Jr, from Cliff Gallup to the Clash, going through Nick Curran and the early ska from the '50s. Pay attention to these guys, kids, and dump all the Joe Shitamassas and John Mayers you could ever come across and enjoy some real art.
@@mikecaldwell4442 JD's style is more R&B than rockabilly. It's harder edged, less country, dare I say... blacker. The late Nick Curran had that 50s R&B sound down pat, JD has a little more of a modern spin on the genre.
What an intro, just the best! Bo Did be proud of you JD!! Great interview too, and John B your interview style knocks most of the media into a cocked hat - made my day you guys! Thanks!
J.D. is so darn great. & I'm glad John was there to catch this. He would be the guy to appreciated J.D.'s music & gear, style, etc. Poifect I tells ya!
Man those shots looked so good I had to pause so I could Indulge in a couple ,so I feel much better now ...Grrrrr.!!!.....Nik...nik...Swampppppppppppp!!!!
Very cool rig rundown! That Smith guitar is awesome! I also love the use of a 15" speaker in the Texotica amp. Great tone! Very cool info...thanks for making this one for JD.
I was also a Strat hater. Everything seems to be in the wrong place for my playing style. Now I own 7 of them but I mod them all in various ways. I still don't like standard Strats. Just cannot play them like that. Cool vid JD. Now I gotta get me a Billy Bo 😉
I love his sound and that Thunderbird/Jupiter is amazing. I'm a big Bo Diddley fan and have a custom built copy of a rectangular bodied one that he used(I am not fond of the Gretsch models of it). I also love tremelo and slapback echo. His set up is very modest compared to some and so great sounding. That plate reverb sound pedal is amazing. It sounds like no pedal I have ever heard. I really want one, I am going to have to find out where to get one.
Anybody who is hip to Mark Neill and TK Smith is good in my book. Check out Neill's production work with The Paladins and Smith's playing on The Smith Ranch Boys. The best stuff ever! RIP Nick Curran (lil' Little Richard)
+ApertureIntern023 I laughed so hard when he said, and I'm not completely sure why. I think it's just because it's such a minor thing to have a nightmare about :)
How could you not love a Strat? I'm not a single coil guy by any means. I hate the way the volume kicks when you play it. But that sound man. It's so distinctive and recognizable. Every guitar player knows that sound.
I thinks it's one of those guitars that you either love or hate. And if you hate it, you probably never played one before. Then you get your hands on one and you dig it. I was never a big fan till my brother got one.
***** I don't really like the way they're put together. As I said, the damn volume knob is a pain but I love that Gilmour sound, y'know? I kind of went through the same thing with Teles. I never like them. I always thought they were ugly and they were just for country guys. Now, as I get older, I'm kind of digging them.
Thanks for the show 'n' tell JD! Awesome TK Smith! . Strats are all different & not always in a good way. Teles , can't be beat and understand totally about the "fight". John B : You have nightmares about plugging straight in? Pedals can be fun , but I can't be bothered most of the time plus it's not good to rely on them because if a pedal goes kaputt ,you've lost "your" sound. Think about it... Jimi famous for a few pedals of the era played straight in at Monterey '67.... Angus Young, AC/DC -No pedals ...Pete Townshend, Ace Frehley , Paul Stanley.. Mostly these guys played pedal free or pedal lite back in the day..... And T Bone Walker plays one of those pedals does he? He died over 40 years ago !
Slovacek * Strats suffer from success. Someone who knows nothing about boxing will say Muhammed Ali was the best. An expert will say Muhammad Ali was the best.
I am starting to notice not all the rig rundowns are listed on the playlist. I have gone through that playlist about 12 times and never saw this video. Same with some other videos.
What strap is he using on that first custom guitar? I need to get one of those it's exactly the thickness I dig! If you know I would love to check em out!
I was born in ‘47 rockabilly came in when I was 6 or 7. Began playing professionally in ‘61. Rockabilly was pretty much over but Ricky Nelson and Ronnie Hawkins were still big. All the players my age played Strats. That was it. Jimmie Vaughan said exactly what JD said.....A Strat can do anything.
My first instinct use to be that Fender guitars sounded like you were playing through a couple of cans connected by a string. I know that they are brighter now and seem to have more tone. I've played Fender Strat copies for years and yes, I have played a actual Fender Stratocaster. I like the sound. I don't like how they are set up. I hit the volume knob because it's right were I strum. Yes, I can move my hand up but why? They make other guitars including Stratocaster style guitars with their controls in other places. I kinda have to accept Fender because I play a Jackson that is made by Fender but I think I actually prefer the ugly Telecaster over the Stratocaster or any other model made by them.
They talk about it @ 10:15, it's a Charlie Christian pickup. TK Smith, the guy that built the first guitar the Jupiter (Bo Diddly) made it for him. Lollar makes a rendition of it.
Ian Taylor Photography I will never understand why the interviewer chooses to talk the artist through the pedal board. You're running the interview, have them play the damn things.
That's another shared thing between JD and Jimmie Vaughan, both of them gig with Mex Fenders which is awesome. They are really high quality for the money, I have a Classic Player 60's Strat in sonic blue and I'm looking for this exact same Tele. They're like 800 bucks, if you wanted nitro and 50's hardware on American you'd pay 2 grand easy.
so every single detail of the guitar was built by TK. then we get to the saddle and its built by someone in st Louis? huh? cool rundown though, too geeky for me
A poker through butter wow I thought it was a knife. Man Man Man Man saw him them apear n Glasgow 👎thought it all sounded like a Brian Adams concert he also wore the denim jacket he had more effects pedals than a church organ I left after 15mns waste of my hard earned cash nothing like he tries to promote and I'm a real rockabilly
Saw him and band 5/17 with Plant/Krause. Instant fan. Great sound.
Probably the best episode I've seen and I've never heard one of his tunes.
Dude! Listen to JD ASAP! You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll know.
Listen to “My Little Firebug“.
JD's so chill and just likes what he likes and those are my favorite rundowns.
I have to admit I was unaware of JD Mcpherson until this. Thanks for the Rundown and, mostly, thanks for turning me on to a player I should have been listening to all along. Love what you're doing John! Please keep it going!
"Degradation is my sound" I love the he quoted Nels Cline. Awesome quote.
That is one of the coolest custom builds I've ever seen. And in very worthy hands...
Just saw JD open for Plant/Krauss & then he came back out to play lead with them. He's excellent, check out his music.
We saw him last night and Chattanooga I’m digging in deep today
I’ve recently discovered JD’s music. What a cool guy. Great rig and sounds!
That Bo Diddley inspired guitar is just the epitome of cool.
excellent choice to start the video with the Bo Didley beat
I've been a fan of JD's music for a while. Now I'm a fan of JD. What a cool, knowledgable, interesting guy.
Dat Bo Diddley straight off the top sold me.
I agree with every one that mentions that this was the best run down. But I also gotta say that it's also the first time I heard mention of an interviewee that learned from watching this great show. Real nice!

Just saw JD in SF last weekend. Great performer and cool guitars!!!!
this guy just seems like a cool dude to hang and chill and talk with. This was such a relaxing rig rundown.
JD and Jimmy Sutton are the most exciting thing that ever happened to rock'n'roll in the last 20 years. Lukeblueslover well said dude well said. Catch JD live
like him...needs to lose the facial hair...does not cut it in rockabilly
@@mikecaldwell4442 JD's style is more R&B than rockabilly. It's harder edged, less country, dare I say... blacker. The late Nick Curran had that 50s R&B sound down pat, JD has a little more of a modern spin on the genre.
This guy makes great music. A bartender in NYC plays him all the time and turned me on to him.
Love people who enjoy sharing and teaching. I think JD mentioned in an interview that he was a teacher in a past life.
Big fan of this series and big fan of JD (and Quilter amps)! What a super nice dude!
What an intro, just the best! Bo Did be proud of you JD!! Great interview too, and John B your interview style knocks most of the media into a cocked hat - made my day you guys! Thanks!
Going to see him live again for the 3rd time next month... Cannot wait! Real deal rock and roll.....
Very cool, thanks JD and John!
thanks for making awesome pedals. My Tremolessence and my Reverberator have a permanent spot on my board.
Just getting into JD now. Amazing stuff...
Came here after seeing Plant/Krause last nite. Crazy looking guitar and amazing playing.
J.D. is so darn great. & I'm glad John was there to catch this. He would be the guy to appreciated J.D.'s music & gear, style, etc. Poifect I tells ya!
+greatvanzinni Wow! I rem seeing T.K. with Big Sandy. He was/ is great too! What a piece of art.
Man those shots looked so good I had to pause so I could Indulge in a couple ,so I feel much better now ...Grrrrr.!!!.....Nik...nik...Swampppppppppppp!!!!
Best Rig Rundown ever! Thanks for this.
Very cool rig rundown! That Smith guitar is awesome! I also love the use of a 15" speaker in the Texotica amp. Great tone! Very cool info...thanks for making this one for JD.
Thanks for turning me onto the Dr Scientist Reverberator JD. Love that little guy.
Great video, thanks for putting it out there.
Holy cow, slow down with all the names - I can't Google that fast!
I'm here because of the awesome thumbnail :-) So far, only a few minutes in and I'm not disappointed.
"you can bend time fabric with that" you, Sir, are a poet ))
I was also a Strat hater. Everything seems to be in the wrong place for my playing style. Now I own 7 of them but I mod them all in various ways. I still don't like standard Strats. Just cannot play them like that.
Cool vid JD. Now I gotta get me a Billy Bo 😉
It's nice to find a Rig Rundown where John doesn't act like a kid in a candy shop
One cool individual, if you haven't jumped on board please do so.
This guy seems like a really nice guy =)
Hmm I detected a little Uncle Lucious when he hit those notes through the Reverberator! Love that sound!
Tavo Vega is the maker of the Nocturne Brain pedal, is from San Diego, CA.
I love his sound and that Thunderbird/Jupiter is amazing. I'm a big Bo Diddley fan and have a custom built copy of a rectangular bodied one that he used(I am not fond of the Gretsch models of it). that sound from 4:04 - 4:10 amazing!
RUclips blessed me with a Depends commercial when I clicked here. Bo Diddley thanks you.
Edited to say...Bo was the shit and FA-Q RUclips.
Love the johnny thunders name drop!
This dude has the coolest taste in just about everything, but in breaks my heart to see a Supatrem in that state
handmade is incredible. Art. Nice guitar.

"I have nightmares of pluging straight in."
UHHHHH That's what she said!!!
+ApertureIntern023 I laughed so hard when he said, and I'm not completely sure why. I think it's just because it's such a minor thing to have a nightmare about :)
That's what your MOTHER said!
Plugging*

Same here, thought they looked like Gumby and were very generic. haha. I dig them now for the most part. Still not my go-to guitar though.
you can change the switch the knobs, the switches, everything on a Strat and not butcher anything since it's all on the pickguard.
Love that swiss army blanket in the background =)
Thanks for the show 'n' tell JD! Awesome TK Smith! . Strats are all different & not always in a good way. Teles , can't be beat and understand totally about the "fight". Bohlinger bought a comb !
Kotow Boy It was a green Bakelite comb
Just saw these guys in kokomo ind badass rockabilly
So we're not going to ask about the golden panther?
love how he said Johnny thunders
I would love to jam with JD
I felt 100% the same about strats till about 3 weeks ago
Slovacek * Strats suffer from success. Someone who knows nothing about boxing will say Muhammed Ali was the best. An expert will say Muhammad Ali was the best.
Someone needs to tell him that Pyramid Golds are a great flat wound string and most sets come with both a wound G and a plain G.
14:40 "I listened to a lot of Dinosaur Jr. as a kid..." - take THAT J Mascis! lol
Beautiful guitar I’d get a hold of Robert Williams? To get a quote
I am starting to notice not all the rig rundowns are listed on the playlist. I have gone through that playlist about 12 times and never saw this video. Same with some other videos.
Hail Yeeeeeeeeah!!!
🖤🙌🖤 🙌🖤 🙌🖤
Looks like the guitar Zal Zonofski played in the Lovin Spoonful.

Surely he meant T Bone Burnett. (17:00) T Bone Walker died 43 years ago and it’s doubtful he used any stomp boxes.
Saw this guy 2 days ago in Philly.
No wonder Robert Plant has this guy in his band.
JD McPherson is a cool or cooler then I though that he would be.
t bone walker used a fulltone tremolo? uhhh what? think he meant someone else. T bone walker wasnt using no pedals
for gods sake, go through the pedalboard by playin something.
"I bring this one mostly because its noteable that....its a strat" XD
NICK CURREN RESPECT
Could please someone tell me what pickup is in that telecaster? (on the neck position)
They talk about it @ 10:15, it's a Charlie Christian pickup. TK Smith, the guy that built the first guitar the Jupiter (Bo Diddly) made it for him. Lollar makes a rendition of it.
Azekiano Probably the first Tele guy to put a Charlie Christian pickup in the neck position was Danny Gatton. If you haven't, check out Danny Gatton.
I want to do a drinking game with friends and slam a shot whenever one of them uses the word "man"
If he's ever on a double bill with Imelda May I will move heaven and earth to get there
That guitar looks like the Gibson Les Paul Studio and the Gretsch Thunderbird had a baby. Very sexy...
There are two kinds of rig rundowns. Ones where they actually play, and ones where they don't. I like the former.
Just hit a damn chord will do!
Ian Taylor Photography I will never understand why the interviewer chooses to talk the artist through the pedal board. You're running the interview, have them play the damn things.
This is when John still dyed his hair.
A opeth rig rundown would be nice
other channels have them
It is nuclear powered.
The first guitar is a lot like the Guild Billybo.
I can sum up this rig rundown in one word "man".
We want to hear the sound and demos, not just talking!
If u want to hear his music liston to his music, this is about his stage and live setup
what modal is that tele? I know they say but I don't think they mention what type
I'm pretty sure it's the Tele I own! a Fender Classic Series 50's Telecaster Lacquer. Really beautiful Mexican Tele with a lacquer finish.
That's another shared thing between JD and Jimmie Vaughan, both of them gig with Mex Fenders which is awesome. They are really high quality for the money, I have a Classic Player 60's Strat in sonic blue and I'm looking for this exact same Tele. Sounds like bo didley
China: $279.00 AliExpress,can be customized ...
so every single detail of the guitar was built by TK. then we get to the saddle and its built by someone in st Louis? huh? cool rundown though, too geeky for me
People do misspeak, it does happen sometimes. Quit splitting hairs and just enjoy the info.
Bohlinger has a date with Fed Ex on his hand.
I’m English.. we don’t say diago
Yet another "Strat" player who had to swap out the pickups to get a usable tone.
Sorry but if you have nightmares about plugging straight in then you obviously rely on FX.
A poker through butter wow I thought it was a knife. Man Man Man Man saw him them apear n Glasgow 👎thought it all sounded like a Brian Adams concert he also wore the denim jacket he had more effects pedals than a church organ I left after 15mns waste of my hard earned cash nothing like he tries to promote and I'm a real rockabilly
hes got his strap on the wrong way...
That was a waste of 3.5 minutes
Anybody catch who made that Melita bridge? Entity? Envy?
