    In the United States today, if you are over eighteen, a citizen, and the resident of a state, you can vote (with some exceptions). So, how have voting rights changed since the first election in 1789? Nicki Beaman Griffin outlines the history of the long fight for a more inclusive electorate.

    Wish voting day was treated like a holiday so any one having to work could be sure to have opportunity. Also those being able to educated and travel if needed to vote. The issue about how there are those with special districts and how easily corrupt gerrymandering can be is no surprise besides counting of votes being messed up every year some way.

    It's time we give US citizens in Guam full voting rights as US citizens in the states. It's outrageous how our soldiers and our fellow Guamanians who are identified by the Guam Organic Act of 1950 as US citizens aren't given the rights they deserved. I hope after 64 years of oppression we the people of Guam are given the greatest gift of democracy the vote for our president and have our one and only delegate the the voice and power to vote on our country's bills and other issues.

    Proportional power is what you explained, as more people vote the power of a single vote decreases. But the intrinsic value of the vote does not, you have a say and no matter how many people vote you still have that say. The value of something is not linked to its power, it's linked to its principle.

    The US used a first past the post voting system. As an independent, I often feel like my vote is wasted unless I strategically vote for the major party that I dislike less. If we had the alternative vote (where you can rank your choices) or something else that doesn't always result in 2 parties (or at worst, a strong minor party that cause the spoiler effect) I would feel like my vote counted more and be more likely to vote more often.

      The video said 40 percent of people who can vote don't. So that's a lot more people than the homeless population. It's a good question our country needs to ask ourselves why so many, almost half the amount of eligible Americans aren't voting. I believe people living in poverty and the working-class are less likely to vote because they don't believe their vote matters or they're too busy working and living paycheck to paycheck to worry about voting. Unfortunately, that means no one in the government is going to be concerned about the political values of the working class because they don't vote and so they really have no sway.

    You're right. Pragmatic centrists don't have the patience to deal with the way things are and many do not participate in the political process. But this gives the ideologues free reign. The worse things get, the more the pragmatists turn away from politics and the more the ideologues' votes count. That's why I think that people should at least vote for the best of the lot even if that person will not win, merely as a protest vote and to give a good quality candidate hope they can win.

    I've seen his videos and I live in a country where we have the 1,2,3,etc... system and other improvements on the US system. But the fact remains if you're dissatisfied and want things to change, you have to vote. That is the only point I'm making. "Fear politics" is another issue and one that I can't cover completely in a single comment, but the short solution is to stop being afraid of the opposition and vote for who you actually want, compromise is for the politicians, not the ballot box.

    The US has never been a democracy, and the founding fathers never wanted it to be. Even the US Constitution states what this country was intended to be: a republic.
    Article IV Section 4, "The United States shall guarantee to every state in this union a republican form of government, and shall protect each of them against invasion..."
    "We are now forming a republican government. Real liberty is neither found in despotism or the extremes of democracy, but in moderate governments."
    -Alexander Hamilton 1787
    "Democracy has never been, and never can be, so durable as aristocracy or monarchy; but while it lasts, it is more bloody than either. … Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. It is in vain to say that democracy is less vain, less proud, less selfish, less ambitious, or less avaricious than aristocracy or monarchy. It is not true, in fact, and nowhere appears in history. Those passions are the same in all men, under all forms of simple government, and when unchecked, produce the same effects of fraud, violence, and cruelty."
    -John Adams 1814
    "Democracies have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths."
    -James Madison

      The U.S. is a democracy. The term "democracy" is more generic than you're making it out to be. So is "republic," for that matter. The U.S. is a "republican form of government" that happens to also be a democracy.

    • @dariaflake7379
      @dariaflake7379 10 лет назад

      Axel Trumbo What, then, do you define "democracy" to be?

    • @axeltrumbo9473
      @axeltrumbo9473 10 лет назад

      I'll just give you a couple of examples from dictionary.com:
      (1) democracy: government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.
      (2) republic: a state in which the head of government is not a monarch or other hereditary head of state.
      Both of these definitions overlap.

    • @dariaflake7379
      @dariaflake7379 10 лет назад

      That's interesting. Under the definition I'm aware of, the Dictionary.com definition of "democracy" actually describes a republic. A democracy, as far as my definition goes, involves direct votes by the people for bills, laws, etc., and a republic involves elected officials to do the same job. To the best of my knowledge, the definition of democracy that I've just given is the definition that the founding fathers assumed. I suppose if you want to define democracy according to Dictionary.com's definition though, then yes, we are a democracy.

    • @axeltrumbo9473
      @axeltrumbo9473 10 лет назад

      I think a big factor in this whole democracy v. republic debate is that people are defining the words differently. Two people can be in complete agreement on what the U.S. government is, but one person is calling it a democracy and another is calling it a republic. Anyway, just a thought.

    SOME 17 YEAR OLDS CAN VOTE IN PRIMARIES IN THE USA. We should recognize that in 16 states in our nation, some 17 year olds can vote in the primaries and caucasus. In the general election in November, you have to be 18 years old. But some states allow 17 year old young people to vote in the primaries. These laws usually state that if a young person is 18 before the November election, he has a right to vote in the general election, AND ALSO in the primary that is linked to that election. In the 2018 election the following states allow 17 year olds to vote in primaries, Nebraska, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, Vermont and Maine. Let's get the 17 year old to vote in the 2018 primaries. Let's look forward to the 2018 election.

    It's better to vote for the major party you kind of agree with than a 3rd party you totally agree with, because your vote can only count towards one and the party you disagree with is not usually sharing their vote with a 3rd party at the same time. By voting 3rd party, you're in a very real way helping the party you least agree with. This is a fundamental flaw with a "1 person 1 vote" or "first past the pole" voting system. People don't vote for who they want, they vote against who they don't.

    ONLINE VOTER REGISTRATION IS THE LAW IN 31 STATES IN THE USA. In past elections, thousands of honest citizens were denied the vote simply because they were not registered to vote. Online registration gives citizens another chance to register. You may also have the right to do an address change or a name change online. You usually have to have a state driver's license or a state ID card to register online. To get more information, and to receive online registration services, and to be linked up to your specific state, go to Google and google in "register to vote." EVERY STATE is important to vote in, not just the battleground states. We must vote for the President, but we must also vote for ALL of the down ballot candidates, including senators, representatives etc. Let's get everyone registered to vote. THEN LET'S EVERYONE VOTE IN NOVEMBER!

    This type of thinking is a major issue, to your first question, you can always vote for whom ever you want. To your second, it's important to vote for the candidate you want regardless of a chance of winning. e.g. in the last potus election if someone like Gary Johnson received 5% of the vote the Libertarian party would have received government funding and equal ballot access, taking us closer to a three party system. Hopefully the 1% he did receive will lead to more votes next time.

    Irrationality is a human quality. It's a bit like divergent thinking. Not necessary, or good, but inadvertently incredibly useful. As for the voting in of prolific candidates, two things to consider. There is little chance that a teenager would blindly vote for whichever candidate because he was told. Secondly, younger children would not be conditioned to vote for certain parties anymore than they are now and so posterity escapes our control.

    People who say if you don't vote don't complain: I know that I don't vote because of pure disgust for how our voting system works. Reform the voting system entirely. I hate how the voting system here in America is. My vote statistically means nothing because I am not properly represented by a candidate from our two party system that has a third party that very few vote for. I would think that if we had to rank all the candidates in order from most liked to least liked that would turn out better.

  • @whoisascholtens
    @whoisascholtens 10 лет назад

    Your assumption is that the third party candidates are of higher quality. I have been active in third party politics for over a decade, the quality of third party candidates is just as bad. The problem lies not in the electoral college, or party system. It lies in a primary season that benefits only ideologues (those with strict or fundamentalist views on subjects), and not pragmatic centrists.

  • @GrantButler
    @GrantButler 10 лет назад

    Because of the electoral college many people feel like their vote dosen't matter; or "my whole state is almost all republican, my one vote won't make a difference either way". Can we get a video explaining how the electoral college works?

    we need to half every public office's terms. the office is a service, not a career; it should be a temporary position.They are serving us we are not serving them. If every politician was constantly up for re-election then these people would make better choices with their acitons.

  • @ChillinGames
    @ChillinGames 10 лет назад

    i dont vote because all the parties are the same! the slight difference in them are not enough to change anything, so whats the point. Plus there is the fact that even if there is a big difference, i never agree on everything of each parties so i end up picking the that will do less damage as a pose to the party that will do the most good. i think there should be a 'none' option, if it wins then we have to have another election right away with all new candidates.

  • @bosung90
    @bosung90 10 лет назад +2

    the main core purpose of voting is to vote the right person who will be able to make the country a better place for everyone overall.
    The problem with current voting system is that people who has no basic education can vote too. Those people have hard time distinguishing lies and false promises that politicians blurt out.
    I am not going against any particular race or culture to vote (actually its the opposite).
    I believe that we need literacy requirement test in order to vote, which is not biased against any race or culture, but test that looks if that person has minimum education level in order to make the right vote.

    Why don’t more of us vote? Because no single citizen has even a small fraction of a say in who selects our president or other elected officials, the electoral college does.

  • @AaronMk91

    Given the current nature of politics by both sides of the aisle I can see why most people don't. And looking at the actions of politics on a more local level in Detroit I can see more of where people loose faith in the elective system if none of the candidates being offered are any good, or have proven to be no good in the past (Kwame, as a Detroit example). As well, I could venture to argue that indep/3rd party candidates sort of need more energy to look into than what most have by day's end.

    There are lots of independents worth voting for, but people don't vote for them because they don't have tons of money to spend on advertising and campaign management. People refuse to vote for candidates unless they have multimillion dollar warchests, so we are essentially getting what we ask for: politicians that have been paid for by industry and the mega wealthy.

    While I wholeheartedly agree this would disenfranchise the large majority of people who do vote including many people currently in office which is why it would never pass. I mean for love of all that is awesome most people are apparently unaware of Section 8 of Article 1(let alone any other section) of the US Constitution or if they are they don't care that the people reporting the news clearly don't.

    How do the voters have rights if after all the votes are in the one with the most votes looses? As long as elector votes determin the winner the people have not gotten who THEY voted for. Elector areas are set up to give the rich the way to get who they want not the regular person. Voters rights can not be used to upset the rich. Rights will only be upheld if is counted one vote means somethig.

  • @whoisascholtens
    @whoisascholtens 10 лет назад

    Get rid of primaries, replace them with weighted voting and you would see revolution in the quality of candidates elected. It will never happen, because the two parties know that would be the end of themselves.
    Also the idea that there are "lots of independents" is crazy. There are a few...very few...too few. Mostly because they almost never win.
