- Student drops knee at pull time falling at 155 feet per second (120 mph) and starts flipping and spinning while instructor chases him down to pull shoot for him.
When you watch videos of people who know how to skydive it looks effortless, then when you see someone who doesn’t, you see how hard it must be.
The first time I skydived it was so much sensory over load I could barely see anything anything till he pulled the shut

M C yeah but in such a way that he makes manoeuvres that he obvious isn’t ready for, and everyone knows if in trouble just bang out, ie the frog or humping the beach ball. Then u get stable. I started on holiday jumps but then went to full kit Bergen rifle n radio. Even if u left a pocket open on your backpack that could seriously effect your dive plus at altitude if your teeth are not perfect n have air in due to fillings I’ve seen some grisly scenarios. The tooth just explodes. But that’s military jumping n not the low levels no oxygen civilian jumps with not additional kit. If you can do the above then you truly are a skydiver

I think he might have tried to appear confident there, after his "flips", LOL, but I can't picture him being confident, nor should he. Putting his feet together and grabbing his knees and pointing his toes! Great for the diving board, but you aren't trying for a no splash up there. Well...maybe you are. Seeing his reflexes when he lost stability made me cringe. The impulse to bend your body towards the ground should have been broken before this.
At 1:24 you can hear the instructor going: “Holy shit!”. Great guy, he literally saved his life.

I believe you, I watched a doc on the 'frogmen' of my country, they couldn't do the jumps for aff here for some reason so they went abroad to DeLand.

Looks to me like that student shouldn't really be working in maneuvers since he obviously hasn't learned how to stay stable in the air. A few more plain belly jump with some turns and tracking seem to be in order to learn about stable position.

That's why you have instructors! I don't have a lot of jumps (B-license), but it seems that although the student is (overly) confident in his ability to maneuver around, his technique to achieve stability apparently is based on flailing around until he accidentally is on his belly and stable. When he screwed up the pull (by dropping a knee), he went into "flail" mode hoping he would end up on his belly. Lucky for him, the instructor seemed to see this coming and was close by. No hesitation to move right in and fix things. Good training video to show the value of smooth and controlled movement and body position.

yeah, when you high up you don't see the ground coming closer at all, but the lower you get the faster the world below gets bigger. thats why it is so important to keep checking your altimeter like a maniac.

During the aff you are supposed to do jumps where
-you do some flips to mess up your stability and then fix it
-track
-turns and maybe barrel rolls
and these are the things he did and I think he did them well enough (I am not an instructor so there could actually be some failing mistakes but it doesn’t matter too much for my comment because he either way failed because he didn’t pull)
The only (but definitely grave) mistake in my eyes was that he didn’t pull because he got scared as he lost his balance (probably he was too tense from the adrenaline of trying to get all the exercises in one jump). However he did try to pull and probably at the correct altitude since he tried to pull at 0:59 and we can see the instructor’s altimeter shows an altitude of about 1600-1700 ft at 1:17 which means he probably tried to pull at around 4500 ft which is an acceptable altitude during the couple last aff jumps.
In conclusion I think the student did fine for the most part but failed during the most important part so the jump is obviously a fail and he has to get a good debrief about the 3 most important rules:
1) PULL
2) PULL AT CORRECT ALTITUDE
3) PULL STABLE
And he should always remember from now on that there is a clear hierarchy and that he shouldn’t forget rules 1 and 2 for rule 3.
Also kudos to the instructor for a perfect job, he definitely deserves a lot of beers after that 😉

I've only recently gone on my first tandem, which was EPIC, but created a huge addiction that I'm craving night and day now lol. And that, sir, is why having your main parachute opening device behind your back and "out of sight" is a bad idea (especially for students). The instructor must be in close at pull time so that he/she can readily assist. Former AFF Instructor (certified in the second AFF Instructor class).
Skydiving isn’t the place for hubris, you only get one shot, and this guy seems extremely lucky his instructor was there to give him another.

Why? He's a student in AFF progression. If anything it's the intructor's fault for letting him on that level (I'm guessing level 6 here) too soon. I'm thinking you're not aware this is as student jump, any skydiver would know this. While I did my AFF progression with only 1 jump for each level and never encountering difficulties most people take about 9 to 10 jumps for the total 7 levels progression. So he fucked up a level, big deal. Instructor also shouldn't have chased him, that's not procedure at all (although some DZ leave it at the personal decision of the instructor but it is frowned upon). Let the AAD handle it. My bet is, you're here commenting on this without actually being a skydiver yourself and I doubt you're deliberatly being sarcastic.
@lee hamlin Yeah, my first though was let the AAD handle it, but if the instructor here was the same one that signed off on his previous jumps it's not really surprising he decided to pull for him. I'm not even sure I would have worried about flipping him before throwing his pc for him, but I'm also not an instructor. Stuff like this is why I honestly felt safer going the static line route.
Great job by instructor. 2:04 when student reaches for pilot the instructor sees he goes unstable and IMMEDIATLY moves in. Doesn't wait to see what comes next (which by now one can easily tell the student is WAY over his head). I think he failed that level. :-)

15 minutes in a tunnel and I was golden.
Yeah, it is amazing how minor the control of your body is, especially the legs when you are a skydiving student. I know it from my own and I see it every single AFF course on the videos of the instructors.
At the last course we had two student who were in the tunnel before. One of them was a old fart nearly seventy years old and he did a great job and had only to repeat one level!

Im not an expert, Im at level 17, so I definitely can criticize on this student's jump. My first tip: dont do acrobatics if you cant even perform basic maneuvers such as the Arch, how to recover from a spin, or invert oneself. This guy is lucky his instructor was awesome.

Why did the instructor let him jump like that if he knew how out of control he was? He didn’t look like he should be jumping solo at all.
I don't know how many jumps this student had before this jump but I was actually talking out loud to him!! I don't know if he just lost his control or got disoriented doing the things he did but if I was his instructor, I would have failed him on this jump!! He needs to learn more about controlling himself in free fall & to check his altimeter. I was shouting for him to gain control, don't be playing that much, IF that's what he was doing, and pull the ripcord!!

At 2:04 in the slow mo replay it looks like the student reached for and pulled for something with his right hand. You can see something in his hand- possible the main chute didn't deploy?
Legit question, why didn’t instructor just pull students reserve? Handle was easy accessible. Seems low enough body position was no longer a concern?
I would have done that. He pulled his own at 1500 ft. That's low! If he has/had an AAD (automatic activation device), he could have died from a possible main and reserve canopy opening into each other. 1500 ft, that is 6 seconds from impact, and it takes 2-3 seconds for the canopy to open...

The guy didn’t quite have the ability to control what he was attempting. All those fast tumbles would have got him rather dizzy and disoriented. Then he almost seems to get in control and ready to pull the cord but can’t quite do it for some reason then gets out of control again and the instructor moves in to help. Scary in that they were getting below 2000 feet then

The student failed to pull the main handle at the prescribed altitude, so the instructor moved in to exact his responsibility.
