Original 1968 Ford Mustang Bullitt Explained

  • Two identical 1968 Mustang GT fastbacks were used in the filming of the classic Warner Brothers movie “Bullitt” that debuted in theaters on October 17, 1968. After filming, the cars went their separate ways: the hero vehicle driven by McQueen in the movie was sold by Warner Brothers to a private buyer, and the other - used in many of the jumps during the famous chase scene - was sent to a salvage yard. That jumper vehicle resurfaced in Baja, California, in early 2017, but the other was lost to history until now.
Sean Kiernan, owner of the hero vehicle, inherited the car in 2014 from his late father, Robert, who had purchased the vehicle in 1974. To fulfill his family’s lifelong dream, Sean contacted Ford and the two parties worked together to reveal his movie star car alongside the all-new 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
“You know, it was never our intention to keep this car a secret from everybody,” Sean said. “It just kind of happened with life. I’m just completely buzzing to join with Ford and the new Bullitt and show this car to the world on one of the biggest stages there is.”

I love the fact that once they decided to go public and move on from the car, that they took the car on a huge tour of all kinds of events to let the public get to know and fall in love with her again. Plus it's well documented now, lots of film, photos, specs, and boy were they smart not to sell it back to McQueen when he asked to get it back, the holdout paid off.

Another thing this doesn't mention is the '68 Charger left the '68 Mustang in the dust. That 390 engine just wasn't very fast/powerful. I think for the movie it was also dubbed over with the sound from a GT40 running a 427.

No...there was only one GT S code 390 car. The other was a non-GT 302 car. The 302 car was used for the jumps because the front end was lighter and the shock towers would collapse under the weight of the 390.
The 390 GT was used for the burnouts and the long , fast chase scenery on the open road. At the end when the Mustang almost ran into the ditch when the upper control arm busted and the tire folded over...that was the 302 non-GT car.
All badging was removed so both cars looked identical.
I have the original interview with the on-sight mechanic for both the Mustang and Charger and the original stunt driver of the Mustang.
How funny...as time moves forward , facts are lost and people just make up there own stories.

The car must have been changed because the Mirror is wrong and the rear valance is from the Shelby that had the cut-out eye brows for the exhaust . The best shot of the rear is when Steve leaves the car wash slowly amd merges into traffic . Steve had a small round mirror mounted on the vertical part of the door with 2 screws whcih means there should be 2 holes because the mirror is a stock 68 on the horizontal part of the door.
Anyone in the DOT could have done a VIN code search to see where the car was because we are told that it was used by his mother as a daily driver and had to be registered . The second VIN spot in 1968 was on the drivers side lower windshield to be seen from outside and was stamped on the outer engine bay on the driver side.
Car thiefs in the 1960's were good at making fake VIN tags or bought them from a wreckers to put on the stolen car and match the paint codes .
Both cars appear to have the same VIN sequence number of S125559 .

The rocker panel on steves car was painted, the rear panel lights are yellow but were red on steve's car and how did the antenna move from rear quarter to front fender? the round mirror is changed and rear valance is wrong, so if nothing is restored or changed I doubt this is steves car, maybe one of the others.

We grew up Mopar fans & owner dad my friend & his dad had 2 SS 396 CHEVELLES. BOTH GREY. AND A 400 68' FIREBIRD TRICKED OUT. 3/4 CAM EDELBROCK TARANCULA Aluminum manifold Holley 850 double pumper with the Jets bored out. It tire out the Standard 10 bolt rearend so he put a Camaro 12 bolt & traction bars my point is ....when you find a badass Ford you've got one strong reliable powerful car.

gerald 413 That’s cool he had that car. Similar story: Right after I graduated high school in June of 1977 I bought at 1970 Dodge Challenger, RT/SE, with a 440 & 727 Torqueflite. I got it for $1795.00 at a local Ford dealer, they took it on trade from the original owner. The day I got it I rolled up to the gas pump at the local Exxon station, and the price on the pump for premium was 85 cents per gallon. I just thought Wow, how am I ever going to be able afford gas in this thing! I was making $4.85 an hour driving a local delivery truck. Those were great times back then. Good Day to You!

@@tierone4761 There was a black 427 Camaro that was nicknamed KING KONG. I think my friend was out to dethrown KONG. My friends firebird had so much power it tore out the original 10 bolt Pontiac rearend & my friend put a Chevy 12 bolt & traction bars. He had a B& M quick clik shift to the auto trans mission. Sun 🌞 gauges inside it was Forrest green. My cousin married a guy from Zanesville with a 70' 440 six pack & shaker. But he could never balance the trip pak carbs. It sounded like crap he always wanted to run my dad my dad said no you can barely keep that thing running. Once in Kansas or somewhere out west there was no telephone poles or cars my dad let me set on his lap & steer while he handled the peddles. 1970 field trip on dad's lap going 70. He didn't let me ride long. May God have mercy on his soul lung cancer 45. It was orange 🍊 with to black hood stripes & 2 small good scoops. We should swap pic sometime your car was Rare. My dad said they told him they made 500 69' 440s. Another $500-1000 for a Hemi my mom couldn't drive that & it would have been impractical. My ex took all but o e of my 383 cuda' pictures. Hope to hear from you. Take care bye
