In this video, Daniel and Mick get to grips with the Angry Charlie Distortion. They discovered the pedal on Andy Timmons' board and liked it so much, they decided to make a video about it.
Daniel is playing his newly acquired, 2002 Gibson Custom Shop R8 and Mick is playing his Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster.
The amps are a Lazy J J20 and a Mallard Marshall 18-watt clone - both amps are running all the time, and the only pedal used is the Angry Charlie.
All switching is handled by TheGigRig G2.
We love this pedal, so enjoy!

So wild how far they’ve come
If I was a guitar teacher, these videos would be required viewing. So much insight about guitar sound that is almost never taught by more traditional tutors.
Ah, cheers Jonas, glad you get a lot out of them :)
Almost 7 years passed by and this review stills pretty accurate
the BEST sounding distortion pedal I think I've ever heard \m/, love this video.
I seriously love all of these videos. This has become my favourite thing to watch on youtube.
Cheers Zach, loads more on the way :)
Daniel TheGigRig Is the sound coming through your amp purely from the Mic against your amp's speaker?
This is awesome! You are awesome! This pedal is awesome!! In all seriousness thank you for making this review. I've been trying to find a good review and this is great. Love watching That Pedal Show.
Cheers Andrés :)
This pedal sounds unbelievable! Helped by excellent hands of course! Another wonderful demo... Well done
Man, that was fun to watch! Thanks, fellas, and keep ‘em comin’!
Great demo Daniel thanks for posting this, please keep up the good work.
Finally have my own Angry Charlie and it is definitely staying on my board!
Bought it! Love it! Thanks guys!
I love your segments. I learn so much and the passion for what you do comes through. Keep up the great work!
BTW, I just calculated all of the new pedals I want to buy and may have to postpone retirement for a year or two :)
Michael
I defy anyone to watch this and not google "angry charlie jhs" or put it into an ebay search!!!
Great show guys! Looking forward to the clone show. It would be interestning to put it head to head with super crunch box.
Guys. Another awesome informing, yet informative pedal video. Only do straying yet another pedal I need to own!! My mortgage advisor will be in touch ... 👍🏻
i really love that pedal show! it helped me understand so many things on how pedals relate one to another! i would like though to give a suggestion: you said how much a difference the amp made on the sound the pedal pushed and since we can't all afford 2 amps, would it be a good idea to make those kinda test and maybe add the comparison between a clean headroom fender like tone and the marshall crunchier, more compressed sound so we could see the difference? i think this would put your tests at an even higher level in terms of geekiness :P and give even more informations on the products you tests. Cheers!!
I was shopping for a full pedal board rig yesterday, thanks to this show, Angry Charlie is the star feature of it. I've never heard a pedal sound better than an amp before, but this pedal is insane.
THE ONE WITH THE 3 BAND EQ IS BETTER
Great demo again guys. As an aside, I think you might like the Bondi Effects Sick As, terrific OD.
Love the videos, love this pedal, shame I'll never own one!!
It's a amazing pedal!
That sounds effing good!
Got one used in sight... Excited as a little kid on christmas ahahah
Great looking les Paul
there's 2 guitarists that I would lose my mind if I ever got to meet. Andy Timmons and Eric Johnson are God's in my eyes.
Charlie...you bit me Charlie.
now that sure sounds fab!! ;)
I love these videos, I've learnt so much about amps and pedals! I've had an Electro Harmonix Electric Mistress since 1979 and never knew that was what andy summers used - I thought he used a chorus. Please keeping making the videos!!! Although they are costing me a fortune (I'm now the proud owner of an xotic wah, Timeline, Angry Charlie, JRAD Archer and a serious credit card bill! I'd be interested in learning more about what works best in an effects loop rather than in front of the amp and how to set up the effects loop with a pedal board. I'm using a lone star special and TA30, but have never used the effects loop. Thanks again! Great videos.
DISTORTIONS AND OVERDRIVES IN THE FRONT OF THE AMP AND TIME BASED EFFECTS LIKE REVERB AND DELAY IN THE LOOP, THIS GUY CALLED THE TONE KING HAS A GOOD VIDEO ABOUT WHAT GOES INTO THE FRONT OF AN AMP AND WHAT GOES IN THE LOOP
I purchased the Angry Charlie because of your demostration, I ´m very pleased by this pedal, it´s a monster.
Thank you very much.
I have a question, it´s true that this pedal works better with 18v power supply? I´m afraid to try it I don´t want to burn it.
Thanks.
Just ordered one of these off the back of this video. Been using a visual sound son of Hyde for my high gain stuff. This blows it out the water. Cheers Dan.
My pleasure :)
I typically don’t use distortion pedals save for my jhs Packrat, but want more amp like distortion, and this is the perfect pedal for the job.
Killer sound.
5:30 ..tone going straight into Mick's heart. :)
LuckyLicks and everybody else, apparently.
Hey guys great pedal bought one after looking at your vids. It's quiet too but my bb preamp ain't so which is being exacerbated by use of IEMs. Is noise mostly wiring or power supply related as I see you never use a gate? Would appreciate a video on this if you get chance. Perhaps the last 25 years of blood, sweat and many tears over tone has been a necessary evil but I sure would have preferred that the last 3 months of watching your videos came first!
ENjoyed the demo. Are those compressors on?
just bought me self an angry charlie and I FUCKING LOVE IT
When I was researching Marshall in a box type pedals about a year back, the Angry Charlie was one of the top pedals on that list. The one that actually topped the list was the CMAT-Mods Brownie (though I never ended up ordering one).
It's always hard to tell from RUclips demos uploaded from different people using different amps etc, but from the demos I watched it was the one that appealed to me the most. Off the top of my head the list was something like this (although some are different in form factor and general scope):
(Alphabetical manufacturer order)
AMT M1 and M2
Carl Martin Plexitone
Catlinbread Dirty Little Secret
CMAT Mods Brownie
JHS Angry Charlie/Charlie Brown
Joyo British Sound
Menatone King Of The Britains
MI Audio Super Crunch Box
Tech 21 Sansamp British
Tonebone Plexitube/Hot British/London
Wampler Plexi Drive (deluxe if it was out when I made the list).
ZVEX Box Of Rock
I'm sure there are some I've forgotten, but for anyone researching this kind of pedal, hopefully this is helpful :)
CANT FORGET THE MARSHALL GOV'NER OR GUV'NOR OR HOWEVER ITS SPELLED, THE BOX OF ROCK WAS SUPPOSEDLY MODELED DIRECTLY FROM A JCM800, ALSO THE TONE CITY MODEL M THOUGH I NEVER TRYED ONE, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A VIDEO OF PEDALS THAT ARE SUPPOSE TO BE LIKE MARSHALLS IN A BOX, ESPECIALLY JCM800 TYPE PEDALS AND OF PEDALS THAT ARE SUPPOSE TO BE MESA BOOGIE AMPS IN A BOX ESPECIALLY THE DUAL REC
CMAT-MODS MAKE GREAT PEDALS BUT ALMOST NO ONE HAS EVER HEARD OF THEM SO THEY MIGHT HAVE THE BEST ONE, I FORGOT ABOUT THEM WHEN I SAID WHAT I DID BEFORE
Yup. I used a JHS Rock Box into a 1970's Marshall for my "I wish I still had hair" metal phase of the late 80's and early 90's.
This new JHS pales my poor hineys ;-)
Different company, Bro.
This channel is awesome! What are your thoughts on the xotic sl drive..how does it compare to the angry charlie?
I would love it if you guys took a look at the Iron Horse by Walrus Audio. That's what I was leaning toward getting for high gain until I saw you guys talking about the Angry Charlie. Now I'm having a hard time deciding.
Dear Daniel and Mick first of all thanks for a lovely channel on youtube. I really enjoy it. I have a question with regard to the Angry Charlie - how does this compare to other 'marshall in a box' type of pedals like for intance the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret, Greer Amps Sucker Punch or the BB Preamp from Xotic or the distortion pedal Reezafratzitz from Emma Electronics, just to mention a few?
+KarzaBarza Hi. We're going to do a big MIAB comparison very soon ;)
I've got a regular Charlie Brown and that pedal is my main drive tone. I get anything from it from Aerosmith type stuff all the way up to buck cherry type tones. The regular Charlie Brown is supposed to be a JTM 45 in a box and the angry Charlie is like a JCM 800 in a box
I have the JHS Firefly fuzz.. Amazing AMAZING fuzz! I'm thinking of buying their "Double Barrel" OD pedal , but I'm also digging the "Angry Charlie" for high gain! ....Oh choices!
The DB has their 808 OD on one side and their "morning glory" OD on the other side.. It's stackable and you can assign what order you stack the two sides.. Really cool pedal!
BTY: I had left my Big Muff on the board in front of the Firefly!, so for experimental purposes I kicked them on together........You're talking something beyond anything you've ever heard before.....I was going to pull the Big Muff ,but now I'm leaving it on the board!
Any chance of seeing what you think of the mi audio super crunch box?
I'd love to see a comparison between that and the angry Charlie.
Thank you, Daniel, now I want all of Timmons' gear. You're the reason I'm going bankrupt in 2015...
+Andy Ferreira so sorry Andy. I know there are a few guitarists wives have contract out on me ;)
Thank you for your so instructional videos! I just subscribed!
if you like that MIAB sound, you should try a Emma Reezafratzitz. If you tried it already, what do you think of it?
I also suggest you compare the AC vs MI Audio Crunchbox
Hi Ricardo. I had one for years, into the right amp it's a very cool pedal :)
Would love to hear an AC and Tech21 OMG comparison.
Hi Daniel, after taking a close look to Andy Timmons Angry Charlie pedal in a Video, i noticed that it does have an external switch, it seems to be modified, since you have been with Andy ,do you know what kind of modification is this and where could i get it?, thanks in advance!
Do you have any plans to make a dvd series? I really enjoy all of your videos!
Todd Hicks ah, cheers Todd. No plans as yet but you never know ;)
Sennheiser e609 or e906?
Id love to hear the angry charlie compared to both sides stacked on the KoT
Just learned on the interwebz that the Angry Charlie is in fact basically a MI Audio Chunch Box clone. It would be really informative if you would do a show about pedal clones - explaining which pedals some of the boutique classics are based on, maybe doing a comparison with the originals?
+Thomas Rytter working on it now Thomas, its going to be very interesting ;)
Awesome! Really looking forward to that one! :-)
+Daniel TheGigRig Where can we find the video? :o
What pickups are in the les paul Dan, sounds insane!!
Killer!
What is the song called that Mick starts to play at 9 mins 40?
Omg I desperately want an angry Charlie lol
the first cord out of the start had me thinking evh immediately.
:(
Are you running the AC at 9v or 18v?
Best Distortion Pedals are: Bogner Red and AmpTweaker Metal Distortion.... :) I´ve got both and tested to many pedals to keep these 2...
Daniel have you tried the MXR Super Badass distortion..? seriously man I have both the MXR and the Angry Charlie... I think you would love the MXR.
+oneguitar i tried it briefly but i think it deserves a longer run ;)
Do you think it reasonable to suggest to my local guitar shops to keep original designed circuits separate from copies/ clones? I'm just reading the Miguel - Guilherme conversation below and I think that pound for pound, I'd like to buy original designs over clones, which should not even occupy the same space or price points. Just a thought.
Hey guys, Cheers, You mentioned around 3:35 that "it's meant to sound like a JCM 900". I'm just curios if you meant the JCM 800? In my search I was only find the latter.
+Matt “Marshall” Bruce yes, our bad :)
Awesome pedal! Any idea of how this might sound into a fender style amp?
PROBABLY VERY SIMILAR, FENDER CLEAN CHANNELS ARE GREAT FOR PEDALS, ESPECIALLY DISTORTION AND HIGH GAIN PEDALS BECAUSE YOU HEAR JUST THE PEDAL
Yeah .. I couldn't hold out any longer. Just ordered one today. I'll send you the bill. :)
Ha! You won't be disappointed :)
+Daniel TheGigRig I can't wait 'till they release the Shrieking Schroeder and the Loopy Linus. Maybe even a Snarling Snoopy and a Pre-pubescent Pig Pen...
Any chance of looking at the can weelden Royal overdrive!? LOVE the videos!!
Have you seen our latest vid? :)
+Daniel TheGigRig yes indeed now! Love this channel!
is this the ONLY time for the entirety of TPS that Mick has tuned (on his strat, no less!) to drop D?
Were they running the Angry Charlie at 9V or 18V, anyone know?
what's mick playing at roughly 4:30 ?
Marvel drive might be the best 4 hoile marshall in a box check it out ramble also makes an awesome twin bender fuzz..I thought the angry charlie was pretty good but there are a lot out there just as good imo also how bout a landgraff demo?
So JHS Angry Charlie or ThorpyFX Gunshot.....if you had to choose just one?
Do these guys always tune down a half step?
DAN YOU STOLE MY FENDER STRAP LOCKS, I WANT THEM BACK!
Hi Dan, I have a question for you, I have a top bost ac30 and telecaster and i was betwenn wampler plextortion and angry charlie, i bougth a wampler and I didn't like it, it sound not definied, like a fuzz in my vox....
Does the angry charlie works wiht a vox with greenbacks????
Thanks man, god video!!!!
Mikel Benito Ochoa Hi Mikel. I like both pedals but the Angry Charlie has a certain attack that I just love. Sounds great with my AC30 :)
I clicked to hear the angry Charlie but also noticed the Omega Seamaster Mick is wearing...
Hello guys! Is it possible for you to make a comparison video of an Angry Charlie vs Triple Wreck? Thank you so much!
ALSO WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU GUYS DO A VIDEO WITH THE SEYMORE DUNCAN PALLADIUM, SOUNDS GREAT IN THE COUPLE VIDEO'S I SAW
With these "older" brown models, what is the main sonic diff between V1 and V2?
+N2F1 there's a different tone stack in the latest version so you have better midrange control
Awesome soundss.. Awesome t shirt xD... BJJ practisioner?
Cheers, and yes, I'm rubbish, but I love it. Training 2 years now at Gracie Barra in Swindon but have also trained with Rener and Ryron in LA. Too much fun :)
Awesome, those guys look like so much fun to roll/learn from
Great les paul! What particular model? Thanks
Hi Ramiro. It's a 2002 custom shop 59 reissue, best LP I've ever played :)
I own an Angry Charlie 4 and I really love it relitivaly clean, but if I turn up the gain too much, the pedal becomes "farty" sounding. How do I avoid this?
You buy the original Marshall Guvnor pedal that it was copied from. lol
@@wodenoftheangles3339 Turns out, I owned a Charlie Brown. I traded it for a PG14 pedal. I'm much happier, now.
Had a 900 also , never ever did it sound that good, had a lonestar as well , and hes using this over the overdrive in the amp ? I gota ck this closer.
I thought the Charlie Brown was supposed to sound like a JTM45... either way, you've made me want the angry one :)
Aaron Smela Hi Aaron, yes, my fault, Charlie Brown is the JTM45 and the Angry Charlie is a JCM 800 ;)
Haha no worries. I've really been loving these videos you and Mick put together. Great info and great playing too. Thanks so much!
What pickups are in your Les Paul?
Andrew Derrick HI Andrew, in there at the moment are OX4's. Im going to A/B them against the original custom shop burst buckers that came with the guitar and a PAF set from Monty's pickups. I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks Andrew ;)
Awe mate, you've got presence.... LOL.
Were you running the pedal at 9v or 18v?
Hi, everything at 9v :)
Daniel - What amp are you using!
Michael Geeves maybe you’ve learned the answer to your question long ago, but in case you haven’t it’s called a Lazy J.
Didn't the angry Charlie turn out to be an MI audio crunch box clone?
It is not the same. 2 components and some values were changed and the difference is notorious. I had both and I like JHS better.
Ha!
In this vid, Mick says twice that the pedal sounds like two stacked together. Dan dismisses him both times and moves on very quickly. That's very un-Dan I find. Dan, please elaborate on your buddy's idea, I'm very interested in it too.
Thinking about buying JHS sweet tea instead, but kept wondering if the angry charlie part will be as good as this single pedal. anybody know???
+RayuanGomball It's exactly the same, and having the TS clone paired with it and ordering toggle makes it incredible. I've used one for a little over a year now and wouldn't trade it for anything.
nice seamaster
sounds better with the Les Paul than a strat
This is a great pedal but I think Mick is dead on when he says that it sounds like two cascaded pedals. I recommended trying a 60$ Boss DS-1 on top of an overdriving amp. I find it gets real close to the Charlie.
I have yet to meet someone who has heard of AT. Big world.
that riff @ 8:19! what song is that from?
Nothing beats a metal zone though, am I right?
once again,Marshall got it right in the first place, the rest is just reinventing the wheel and discovering hot water.
Get a crunch box,you won't be angry,Charlie....
Wowzers, jesus gimme the air tank I am sick of all this GAS!
RaWk!!
I think actually JHS pedals run better for humbucker guitars.....they are too clean for single coil (tryed ANGRY CHARLIE (last version) and MUFFULETTA (preferred big muff NYC Helectro Harmonix) that's my ashamed opinion :)
2:52 "you're hearing only the Angry Charlie" 2:57 "The other pedals are no tin the active G2 loop" ...so you are actually telling me that all the decay tails, like at 3:05; 3:10; 3:26, etc. are the Angry Charlie on its own? I think you have made an honest mistake... but there IS a reverb or a delay in the signal path: that SURELY is not a distortion pedal on its own!
Hi, thSt would be the reverb in the amp. The reason it seems to trail the way it goes is that we go from the sound of the amp on its own to the sound of the mic in the room and you're hearing the reverb tail of the amp through the vocal mic, but the AC is the only pedal in line. We've become much better at not talking over the guitar :)
Daniel TheGigRig do you know what value of resistor and cap Andy Timmons has in his treble bleed? Also is it series or parallel?
Danny Anderson I would like to know that too
My only problem with the JHS Angry Charlie is ethics. The Angry Charlie is a part-for-part, value-for-value, trace-for-trace copy of the MI Audio Crunch Box V2 with the internal presence trimpot moved to the outside. It's the reason I sold it for half the price I paid; I don't want to be associated with JHS. He also charges more than MI Audio.
They key here is it's a *modded* Marshall Guvnor. They changed things. JHS didn't.
+Rhop Exactly, at least MI Audio had the decency of doing some modifications. Surely the Crunch Box it is based on the Guvnor as the King of Tone is based on the Bluesbreaker, but they made some significant changes unlike JHS which not only just makes clones, but also charges ridiculous amounts of money. I wonder if Daniel knows it, would be interesting to see a side by side comparison with the crunch box
+Miguel Pessanha Hi Miguel. Very interesting point and 'm finding its is a point of contention for some. We're going to do a show about clones and look at all this. Thanks for watching ;)
+Daniel TheGigRig There are so many pedals based on the amazing Guv'nor circuit such as the Crunch Box, Suhr Riot, Wampler Plexitortion, Lovepedal SuperLead and Xotic SL I think. The Crunch Box mods took it really to a next nevel, but the angry charlie seems to be no more than a clone of the Crunch Box. Jhs seems to claim that it was born on the footsteps of the Guv'nor but not on the Crunch Box for some reason. I just traced the circuit from some guts pictures and, unlike the old versions which had the same components, the newer versions seem to have a transistor and a couple of resistors and capacitors which I strongly believe to be a jfet buffer in the output. If you get a chance to try the Crunch Box please do and bare this in mind, would be glad to hear your opinion. Anyways, enough of rant. Keep up the good work, great show!!
I especially like how the MI Super Crunch Box has "Hi John!" written on the circuit board - a reference to another much more expensive yet incredibly and uncannily similar sounding pedal.
Wow = changing the presence is like moving the microphone around - unreal...
+David Case It's just a High Cut, the most basic form of a filter
