Yamamoto honestly both deserved and needed to go out like this. He got an amazing showing, a significant amount of back story, and paved the way for the entirety of the story. That is more than most characters got.
The General and Yach should have killed each other in the end. He was the greatest and strongest of them all and yet they made Ichigo a Mary Sue which just made it so unoriginal and disappointing.
