This is the only mature tree i have found in the forest. I hope there is another for pollination purposes. What do you think?

I also have 3 American Chestnut seedlings but they are probably hybrids

That is awesome that you have 3. I have often thought of either digging up a few of the seedlings of these Americans and transplant them over into my Chinese Hybrid Orchard. But I want to see if i have some viable nuts that germinate first.

It is often said that American Chestnut does not self pollinate. But that is not true. They are self compatible and can self pollinate but that is really rare. Male and female catkins flower to different times. But self pollination can occur.

I would really like to think there is another "adult" tree around and I havent found it yet. I have another 30-40 burrs that i havent opened yet.

Definetly Plant the two plump ones. They are probably viable. I live in europe and last year collect nuts from a lone european chestnut. One nut i thought was unviable even sproutet but only a root. But it was much smaller than yours.

Yes, i believe the two plump ones are viable. They are certainly twice the size of the rest of them. Those two are in peat moss and in the fridge. We will see.

Those seed are no good, they did nut get pollinated. The 2 plump ones did look like they were pollinated but did not fully develop. American chestnut does not self pollinate, you need 2 trees. I have a channel where I am starting a chestnut orchard, check us out if you want too.

The two plump ones did sink by the next day. Still not sure if they are pollinated though. There are other Am. chestnut trees around, but all smaller. I can only assume they came from pollinated seed from somewhere. I just haven't found a second mature tree yet. I like your channel btw. 😁

@@M32outdoors I heard somewhere that mature chestnut trees can pollinate each other from a half mile away.
