For anyone who wants to figure this out on guitar, this is what sounded alright to me: Put a capo on the second fret and then the chord shapes in the progression are Em, C, and then the G shape with the low E string going from the third to second fret after four beats. Rinse and repeat.
I remember hearing this on the radio when the played it live, it was great, it really made an impression on me and lightened my mood. I still remember that day, nothing special happened, other than I heard this cover, and that was enough to plant it in my memory. Great stuff and it still makes me happy :)
hahaha, I think my point was because this cover is performed by a band, and those that dislike it are usually the ones that don't like bands in general. But anyhow, thanks for agreeing :)
Oh my gosh this is great! It's exactly what I've been looking for! An awesome interpretation of a song that sounds great in it's acoustic form! Love this:)
Absolutely love both versions. MGMT's is amazing and really catchy but The Kooks' version is so beautiful. It's just as brilliant as the original, if not, more. I also love that it's a British band that covered the song; it gives a much different feel to it.
our band did a cover of this for our music class. we had shakers and bongos and a violin and an organ, and i played the acoustic guitar, then we topped it off with a three part harmony...our teacher gave us full marks and made us perform for our school. this song is so well written and we had an awesome time!
I hate when people say the original is so much better. Obviously! It's the original! The Kooks aren't doing this to say "Hey! Check out our version! It's so much better!" They're just doing their version of a great song, nothing wrong with that.
Every once in a while you come across that band that can turn a bad day into a good day with no more than a few chords and a melody... God save the kooks
I don't really care for either band, but this a credible cover and it's good to see they've really put their own stamp on it. Better than the usual rubbish you get on live lounge, this is worth listening to
I'm learning this song due to the fact of how amazed I am of it. Most of the time covers are crap (maybe a little over embelished but...) and this one takes the cake.
wow both great versions, it seems odd for people tp compare them when mgmt use about 7 synths, and kooks are using acoustics, i reall love the harmonies the singers use in the chorus :)
Thanks for the nostalgia Emily!
7 years on and still so much love for this song
I'm a huge MGMT fan, and I love Kids (as well as all of their music) but this cover is better than the original, seriously! :D I can't stop listening
THIS is why I fell in love with the Kooks. The first song I heard when I KNOW that's The Kooks. The voice, the guitars ... and everything.
Thank you Emily is Away for helping me find this amazing song :)
That moment of absolute bliss when you come across a beautiful version of a song like this...
emily is away is so cool for introducing me this
Love The Kooks and MGMT! Two of my favorite bands ever!
the way he says 'water' in the second verse makes me want to die a bit haha
along with 'crying'

If you don't like this version compared to the original, then you most probably don't like bands. So don't say this cover is bad; be more open minded.
even though that makes no sense, i'm inclined to agree with you.

Netshark1000 lol what? MGMT are a group as well...
I was referring to the genre.
If you do like this version then that means you hate music and are a holocaust denier.
I love covers of awesome songs, which are completely unique from the original versions, but absolutely do them justice. Just like this one!
ahh chords, dissonances, harmonies so good!! what a brilliant take on an already amazing thrilling song!!!
Wow this is absolutely amazing. Still love the MGMT version but this is just awesome.
Oh my gosh this is great! It's exactly what I've been looking for! An awesome interpretation of a song that sounds great in it's acoustic form! Love this:)

Nothing will ever beat MGMT's, they're just too original. But i WANT this!
I hate when people say the original is so much better. Obviously! It's the original!
The Kooks aren't doing this to say "Hey! Check out our version! It's so much better!" They're just doing their version of a great song, nothing wrong with that.
This is so goood!!! I like em both!
The FIFA09 OST was great mainly due to these guys (MGMT n Kooks) bein on it!
Awwsome!!!!! THE KOOKS covering this song is GREAT!!
i dno how to explain....just the whole vibe/sound of it , i love both songs
Every once in a while you come across that band that can turn a bad day into a good day with no more than a few chords and a melody... God save the kooks
@jeremyhillaryboobphd It's for a segment on Australian radio station Triple J called "Like a Version" - they're asked to play a cover...
I don't really care for either band, but this a credible cover and it's good to see they've really put their own stamp on it. Better than the usual rubbish you get on live lounge, this is worth listening to
I love the kooks, MGMT and I totaly love this song!
I'm learning this song due to the fact of how amazed I am of it. Most of the time covers are crap (maybe a little over embelished but...) and this one takes the cake.
I really do love to see a cover make a good song amazing.
The kooks do such a unique take on this song. I love the cover.
I really liked this, it just puts a different spin on a classic that everyone already knows and loves by heart. Stop shitting on them.

When both bands sing it, it tells a different story because their voices are so different.
I enjoy both though
