Its cause by the time Anthony's mimicking it the Dice character is refined down to the funniest aspects of it. A genius comic created it, and another genius comedic mind refined it. It's probably the least known, funniest radio character in history.

Opie sounds like a crazy girlfriend. For the most part, Dice dropped the gimmick and hashed it out. And Opie just sounded like the girlfriend deciding if she will open her legs or walk out.

Btw, the dead father incident was just Howard trashing Mancow's dead dad, not Opie's. And Dice didn't even go with it. Opie misconstrued it completely.

There's a video titled Opie and Anthony Howard Stern compilation (bout 2 hours) that has the audio of Howard trashing Mancow's dead father. Super disturbing because there's zero humor in it. Definitely worth a listen for shock value.
Opie must've thought he was referring to HIS father but Howard clearly uses Mancow's name through the clip.

Dice goes from talking about how he's upset with Anthony Cumia always doing impressions of him on O&A and tells Stern there's something wrong with a guy who does Dice that much who isn't Dice.
Then Dice wants to go into a story involving Opie and Mancow but knows knew Stern has beef with Mancow. But the story involves him....
Clay: Now I know you and him got a thing, and, you know...
Stern:... I have no thing...
Clay:... Just like comics have things...
Stern: ....right....
Clay:....But you know what I'm saying.
Stern: I'm just gonna f*** his father's skull (Mancow's)
Clay: Alright...(hears what Stern says, changes tone completely) Stop it! Don't do that!
Stern: I'mma dig... I'mma dig... I'mma dig up his father's grave....
.... Howard goes into his bit of digging up the grave and skull loving it. So Dice tells Howard not to do that, in all seriousness. And they have a quick spat because of it. Robin even joins in and says something along that lines that their beef is legit (Stern and Cow) and everything should be on table.
I don't know if it's Lange but someone says...
HOWARD LOVES OPIE. HE LETS YOU REEL ON HIM.
Stern then tells Dice that Cow sent his intern poop in a box but Dice just doesn't wanna talk about him because that's his friend. Howard says something that everyone's allowed to say whatever on the show and goes on about the skull jokes. Dice groans at this.
Dice goes into a Cow/Opie fued and how they had beef. And it caused issues with Dices big gig where Opie was making things weird because he didn't like Mancow being there. Or Opie was vocally being rude because of Mancow being around. And
I guess it bothered Dices kids, which of coursed pissed Dice off.
He goes off on a side rant for a minute but comes back to talking about Opie...
Dice: So now from that moment on, the minute he(Opie) did that with my kid. He's, hes... he's dead to me.
Stern: That was it.
Dice: I'll F*** HIS skull.
Stern: Right.
Dice: While he's alive.
Robin laughs.
Stern: Well there you go! (referring to Stern letting Dice say whatever he wants regardless of who it is)
Dice: Ok?
Stern: Right.
Dice: This little f***ing pansy.
Stern: Would you f*** his father's skull?
Dice: goooew. If I had to!
Stern: Well then what are you talking about?
Robin laughs
Dice: But I'd rather do it to him (Opie) while he's awake.
Stern wasn't really talking about Opies dad. The context was...
I should be allowed to talk about whoever when you're (Dice) here regardless of if they're your friends and in Stern world, everything is on the table.
They weren't going after Opie. It wasn't done the day after Opie's dad died. "
Again, Dice got upset about Stern talking about screwing his friends dad's skull. And he was venting about how Opie made his kids very uncomfortable. Then Stern poked fun at Dice by using the same joke he used on Dice to show they should be able to talk about anyone.
For Opie to have been that upset while poking fun of murdered victims (Chris Benoit and the gal Jimmy Snuka killed) is just so lame. It shows he can give but can't take, at all. And I think that really follows him even today when fans judge him. As a man, you make fun of the world, laugh at them in their face, and then you cry about something doesn't have to do with you
TL:DR To sum it up: ALL of Opies stories about himself are other people's stories or poorly made up hero fiction about himself. "I grew up so poor I took my lunch to school in a concrete bag."

How long ya been listening if you don't mind my asking? It sounds like a case that everyone who started listening to O&A on RUclips after they disbanded goes through. They think Opie isn't that bad and is getting more shit than he deserves. Then as time goes on, one day it finally clicks and they realize why things are the way they are. Opie isn't all bad 100% of the time. And for better or worse he was a part of what the show was. But he's deserving of a great deal of the massive amount of shit people give him.
