I was just logging in to say this same thing. Mohr + Breuer could do a (hilarious) show of their own, though they'd need some straight-man carnival barker to keep them on track, or every radio-hour would devolve into loud babble.

This narrative is so annoying. Ant was sending out tapes everywhere. Opie was the first to bring him in and Ant jumped at the opportunity. That doesn't mean he wouldn't have gotten an opportunity somewhere else. Opie had been doing the midnight shift for fucking 10 years before Ant inserted himself into the mix. That's where he would have stayed had Ant not jumped on board and added a new dynamic to the show. Jimmy also jumped at the first opportunity he was given. You don't think Ant + (random host) wouldn't have been interested in a comic that wanted a full time gig on the radio? The chemistry was with Ant, not Opie.
I'm not saying Opie doesn't deserve some credit because he does for those early years, I'm just saying it's absurd to assume Ant and Jimmy would have never found a way to work together had Opie not been there. You never know what could have happened. Ant and Jimmy had the talent. Other opportunities would have come up in time. If anything, Opie is the lucky one that he received a tape from Ant to begin with.
