13:06 I can actually tell you EXACTLY what these statues are: They're all enemies and bosses from the arcade game "Slashout", which Super Monkey Ball's stage director Daisuke Sato was chief designer of. Slashout was a fantasy-themed spinoff of Sega's 3D beat-'em-up series, Spikeout, produced by Super Monkey Ball series director Toshihiro Nagoshi. I think it's really cool that such an obscure title gets to be associated with a well-known one like Super Monkey Ball.
I would also like to add that there's further Slashout references in Super Monkey Ball 2, such as the Mansion from the game's second stage being visible in the Amusement Park, and Ciliegio Cathedral from the first stage being visible in the background of Clock Tower.
16:35 I always got the sense that the giant spinning thing was supposed to be like a monkey Colosseum. Just like how a quarter of the real colosseum has collapsed, a quarter of that building is broken.
I haven't been recommended your vids in a while. I had the nagging feeling that something was missing in my idealist life. Then I realized it was this channel, and manually found you again. Incredible vid. The Storm name thing blew my mind. Super Monkey Ball 2 had some VERY weird implied realities in its stages. Especially the ones you can explore by flying around in the dogfight multiplayer mode!
I’ll give you a free video idea. Mortal Kombat Konquest. Specifically the Konquest game mode. It has a lot of really surreal, ethereal areas in the game; a perfect game to go exploring around in to find strange quiet places
i really like the vibe you're going for with this channel. reminds me of all the times i'd try to get out of bounds and find keys for flat textures of doors, or ways to reach windows or rooms just out of reach. when it was fueled just out of pure curiosity and wonder, before i knew how game dev actually worked. when it felt believable, and i could just take in and enjoy every aspect of a game thoroughly and through an unjaded lense. it's comfortable, feels like listening to my own passing thoughts. i mean that in a good way lol.
This is an incredible video. Always loved seeing the backgrounds of gaming worlds, especially weird ones from the late 90s and 2000s. Also being in 4:3 is super atmospheric!
What freaks me out about Underwater is how if you use moon jump codes to get above the water's surface, there's just...nothing up there. No sky, no sun, no land in the distance, no water surface from above, just void. In this world, beneath the surface of the water is all there is. Nothing exists above the water's surface...
If you're planning on doing another "surviving in a video game world" video like the Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time ones, I'd love to see you break down Super Mario Sunshine that way. Sure, there's an established civilization, but you'd still need money to buy things like food. Maybe check out each world in the game separately to see which are easier or harder to survive in (I imagine you'd be eating a lot of bloopers in Rico Harbor).
You really capture that point in my childhood where I built lore purely from context. There are certain game franchises where I kind of wish they didn't establish their lore over time and just let us piece together what we can from the environment.
Hey, I discovered your stuff through the GTA 3 video. I want to say you're doing a wonderful job. I have always wanted to do this type of video series almost exactly. I, ran into roadblocks in my life that kept it on the back burner for myself. I'm so glad someone with your vibe got to it first though. Keep up the good work I appreciate it.
The towery like building in Sky High is probably inspired from The Tower of Babel painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Look it up! It is very similar!
you made me think of using super monkey ball movement and physics and controls to try to fight dark souls bosses. Like building up momentum to bash into the boss, but can you recover quickly enough to roll back away from the response attack? Sounds fun. Kinda like Sonic spindashing maybe?
16:64 it makes me think of the tower of babel, so perhaps why its unfinished is because the builders couldn't figure out what their bosses where saying but that just a theory
On the other bonus stage there's two faces on the sun. The first one is a generic smiley face but when nighttime comes, for about two seconds you will see a face with 4x the detail. Its making a confused face like 0_o, like its mocking the player once they finally notice and the sun has a 5 oclock shadow. The sun and the moon will also fight. When its the moons turn to be in the sky, he will kick the sun off into the sunset with a smug face. When its daylight, the sun will rise up with his smiley face and hit the moon straight up into the sky and away.
!! this is a treat. i only had the demo for its ps3 game as i couldn’t afford full games, and spent so much time getting to know a handful of stages. love seeing this
I'm not sure if you're doing any interesting game or just ones you have a personal relationship with, but I'd love an analysis of the world of Twinsen's Odyssey.
I disagree, I think the monkey temple beanstalks are a DIRECT reference to the bean stalks you first see. I think it's supposed to symbolise your journey as you "climb" through the levels. Just because they're not in a square at the base doesn't mean they can't be in a square at the top, they are beanstalks after all they go all over the place. I think the final level is meant to reward you for wondering where those go.
How is your and my taste in games almost 1:1 lmao u are so based Check out some community modpacks for SMB2 sometime, a really great community making some dope levels.

Whoa, cool info! I thought they looked like they were from something. This is why I always check the comments!

Was very surprised to see that the space diners didn't even make it to top 5. It always stood out to me as the most iconic background in the series.
Same, I was like "I know which will be number 1...". I do like storm though, even though I have no memory of it
Yeah that background really blew me away as a kid for some reason. So weird and intricately detailed for something you cant even interact with
Burger Cube! I used to dance in my living room pretending I was with the monkeys in there when I was a kid lol.
They look to be having so much fun in those diners.
16:38 It's the Tower of Babel, which also fits with the stage name "Sky High"
17:00 the inspiration here seems to be the tower of Babel, specifically the painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder
Yeah, that's what it reminded me of. As the level's name is Sky High, it implies this version of the tower actually reached the heavens, too.
@@embargovenom9948Huh, you think in this version of history with monkeys, God never split language into all its variations?
@@charliepie1212 Probably, which may be why their technology is so advanced that they have a space station in the outer Solar System!

So aesthetic! I love the old 3D environments in games.

Cape Bananaveral?
damn, you should be the youtuber. wish i thought thought of that🤕
Ape Canaveral, near Monkennedy Space Center.

yummy paint mmmmm
I never noticed AiAi’s head in the submarine until today.
Also, I think the giant spinning building in Sky High has a huge AV logo under it. I think.
You really capture that point in my childhood where I built lore purely from context.

Excellent video! I loved Super Monkey Ball 1 and 2 as a child. Can't wait for part 2!

I really liked this format, very nice and relaxing video. Awesome work as always!
i dont want to be dramatic but your intro might be my favorite on youtube, absolutely immaculate vibes
you made me think of using super monkey ball movement and physics and controls to try to fight dark souls bosses. Like building up momentum to bash into the boss, but can you recover quickly enough to roll back away from the response attack? Sounds fun. Kinda like Sonic spindashing maybe?
then you just end up with banana blitz’s bosses
The design of that superweapon in space makes me think that Super Monkey Ball and Ape Escape might take place in the same universe...
I love this!! Amazing video! Looking forward to see you do the same of the second game, too!
16:64 it makes me think of the tower of babel, so perhaps why its unfinished is because the builders couldn't figure out what their bosses where saying but that just a theory
Sweet Jesus the phrase “I learned it in monkey school” made me laugh too hard LMAO

Looking forward to seeing super monkey ball 2 as that's the one I grew up with on the GameCube - the story itself is bizarre as is the locations
PART 2 WHEN?
First game I ever got on the GameCube, such good memories. Sky High and Monkey Mall are my favorites. Can't wait for part two.
Your channel is so underrated

I live for this shit ngl
lol @6:30 "A GAME THEOR---" 😭😭
SMB2's environment always stood out even more to me than SMB's. Especially the carnival and clock tower backgrounds...
This is awesome! Would you be willing to do this for Super Monkey Ball 2?
13:00 that looks like Saint Peter Square at the Vatican
Why are almost all floating things in the background round?
Astethic choice or lore connection?
I was thinking the same thing about the jungle level looking like dark souls right before you said it.
My favorite of the worlds in this game is definitely Underwater. I've always had an affinity for the ocean, and this is no exception!
"Like imagine monkeys building this" 🧐🧐🧐📸📸
This video really made me want an Ape Escape episode
Welcome back ballers! This is a very nostalgic one for me
Oh my god that Simpsons reference got me GOOD

Why no mention of dole
Strange or mundane places in Bully or Max Payne 1 🙏
dole pyramids, dole is a religion
I hope you do one for Monkey Ball 2!
My favorite is the water level in Super monkey Ball 2
You're like Any Austin, but actually good.
Yooooo super monkey ball!!! I fuckin hate this game

You should do Mario Kart 64 like this!
