In live concert, Diane plays the four-manual, 73-stop organ which was built by Gabriel Kney and his staff, of London (Ontario), Canada. With 5,207 pipes, it is one of the largest tracker organs (gallery console) built in North America. After 20,000 hours of labor, the organ was completed for the Gala opening of the hall on September 13, 1982. The organ has two consoles: The gallery console (tracker action) and a detached electro-pneumatic action stage console.
Whenever I am in a sad place, I listen to this Bach masterpiece piece beautifully played by Ms Bish. The energy and excitement sure lifts my spirit.
Years of disciplined practice there.
Absolute showstopper! I’ve never heard it played well at this tempo but not only does she keep the pace but still has such phrasing and articulation. And that bombastic change in stops towards the end is incredible.
yep
EDIT yep
I find the tempo to be joyous. In a highly reveberating hall, it might get mushy, but here it is all clear. She is as precise as an atomic clock.
I miss your live TV Show! You are perfection in motion regarding the organ playing Bach!!!💕
Miss Bish I love listening to your organ playing! This one of my favorite organ pieces and when I heard you play it, sent chills up and down my spine! Thank you for all your beautiful organ playing!
Brilliantly played with great spirit and energy. It’s a bit fast but I love the excitement and joy she gives to Bach’s masterpiece.
Simply brilliant!
I love the the tempo. It is energetic and exciting to hear. She plays this piece very well and the technical skill is awesome
What an amazing instrument, and an exciting, lovely performance! Thank you so much, Ms. Bish! The console case is a bit modern - not what I'm used to - but I guess can live with that. :)
Ms. Diane Bish is one of the best female organist. I don't get tired of listening to you. I really admire your skill on the pipe organ keyboards. Congratulations for every performance you've carried out.
Are female organists recognizably different from male organists?
Thank you for showing your pedal work!
Superb and sublime organ play from the great lady of the organ. Diane Bish knows her onions in this art. A truly great organist would not be sluggish or slow on a piece not intended for a funeral.
Incredible technique and imagination!
A first-class rendition. But goodness - I wouldn't be able to navigate that rather strange looking console!
Fantastic performance!! I have listened to several of her performances of different composers from Bach to Sousa and she is excellent at every single one!
Nice work Diane you’re the best
WOW! I always thought Virgil Fox played this fast. I think Ms. Bish may have him beat😁
Fantastic playing! I admire the clarity and dexterity and I have greatest respect against the level of organ playing in the USA generally.
I often listen to Diane Bish's videos and each time I am fascinated.
Many comments below mention other names to compare.I miss the name of Wolfgang Rübsam who for was for a long time living in the United States.
His early Phillips recording of all the Bach organ works is marvellous....
I used to enjoy her joy of music show on pbs. Great to hear her again. She is a brilliant gem.
Fantástico! Excelente performance! Parabéns!
Her pedal technique is unique! Sometimes I imitate her :D
Grande!
Absolutely magnificent
Fantastic! Exciting! Perfect tempo! Bach would be ever so pleased. Well done!
It's not a perfect tempo at all and for all you know Bach will be turning in his grave!
....and for all you know, he may not be!! :)
littel bit to fast in my mind, but very good work! as ever! first lady of the organ. excellent pedal play.
There's no such thing as playing too fast, only listening too slowly.
For me, Bach gains nothing at this tempo, but loses a great deal.
Intense! Full stops must blow right through the sound barrier!
Brilliant.......she has skills!
I admire Diana Bish as a remarkable talent. I'm surprised that she feels this piece needs the pace. Admittedly it is often played at a rather too steady and plodding speed, but this performance - even for us cave dwellers - hurtles on relentlessly, taking no prisoners and reaching the winning post with time enough for another prelude before the less forward thinking listeners have realised the work has in fact finished.
Jeez. Tempo is exciting, faster than most, slower than Cameron's. Guys, just let her express her Bach the way she feels it!
It's not our job to "play it the way we feel it," and doing so shows a great deal of disrespect not only to the piece, but to the composser as well...
Purism like that is how the organ will die. Shut up. Let the organ and its music evolve. I highly doubt Bach would care being the showman he was.
Thank you for your kind words. By the way, the organ can’t die, any more than it can "evolve,” it's an inanimate object and Bach isn't a showman because he's... dead! Last but not least, you speak as though you know Bach personally, but I’m willing to bet you never met the man. I bet you also think its okay for modern day composers to "finish” the "unfinished" compositions of Schubert or Hayden and other REAL composers as if they could possibly know or understand the creative genius of these masters or they’re master pieces. But hey, that’s musical evolution… right?!
Well yes the organ (if you knew anything about it) can evolve and has been with the adoption of new technology. Something like a theater organ was at one time was the most advanced form of organ building and demonstrated just how much music could be made with wind blown pipes. In the process it freed the organ from heavy and clunky mechanical action for a newer and lighter electric action and monsters like Atlantic City and Wanamakers show the current peak in organ building.
And yes Bach WAS a showman. Obviously he is no longer alive and if him not being alive means it doesn't mater if he was a showman then it doesn't matter what tempo a piece of his is played at.
And yes I do not care if a modern composer finishes unfinished pieces or the tempo they play at. There is no disrespect being done.
OriginalAstroTard That is a toccata, it is written to be played fast !
Bish, Richter, Pinnock, Biggs, and Fox are my favorite four interpreters of Bach. My favorite pop keyboardist/composer is the late Keith Emerson and Benny Andersson. My personal belief? Bach invented popular music with his secular fugues for organ.
littel bit to fast on the beginning in my mind but also very well played. first lady of organ! ;-) brilliant pedal play :-)
Too fast for me. Wolfgang Rubsam has a rendition that just blows me away.
Heard it on Pandora. Doesn't seem to be on YT. I'll have to hunt down the CD, because I've been waiting since I first heard this work in 1948 to hear a really great realization of the F Major toccata.
Truly wonderful!
All these nose-upturned "experts" really just slay me. To paraphrase an old saw: "Tho who can, do. Those who can't. criticize those who can ( and do)."
Exactly. There is no such thing as "too fast." The piece is notated to be played briskly. Heavy phrasing is fine and appropriate for some pieces--just not this one.
A bit quick for my taste, but my word!! What a performance! Superb pedal and manual technique. Well done Diane! You're a true virtuoso organist. I just want to give up trying to play when I see such ability. May you have many more years of playing in front of you to enthrall and entertain us.
You obviously value virtuosity more than musicality.
Not at all. Don't be so silly and mean-spirited. DB is a fine organist, even if her performance is not to your particular taste.
A colourful and exciting performance, though the waltz-like tempo is quite strange, and, I am afraid, blurs a lot of the subtle details.
Excellent pedal work too.
perfect technic - but a little bit to fast 😢
Slow down. It is not about Orient Express...
i like the why you play the organ.........i like it.....
Played too fast but the virtuoso is incredible.
She has excellent pedal technique.
Wonderful...
Good God that’s fast....:)
Lady is AMAZING!
I agree with others that this is just too fast. There is a lot of detail that is lost when notes come so fast. I also agree that the reeds in this organ are just too much.
Quite acceptable playing !
in this tempo u can `t play lagato all the time, but u have to Play "leggero" which means well accented staccato (like carpenter does).
Your feet are what make you the organist you are Ms. Bish!
Very Nice
Just out of curiosity, how does that electronic console control the organ? There don't seem to be any cables running from it. Is it wireless? Will cell phones interfere with it?
Oh those dancing feet! Sublime
As much as I like Ms Bish, she plays like she's on a high or has has too much coffee! Slow it down and let the harmonies define themselves. Thank you.
Albert peckham Go. To. Bed.
Very well said! I absolutely agree with your comment.
In some places the dreadful registration sounds like a duck quacking. No issue with the speed, but....
WOW😮
How can it be a tracker if the console is free standing in the middle of the floor?
very beautiful.... for me.. little bit to fast....
Great footwork on the pedals. It's always there in the background, wonderful. Thank you.
Here Bish plays like a Bach machine. But I've heard her in concert with such expression that it pulled my heart out of my chest. I'm not too impressed with this organ, if that's what we want to call this otherwise sythesizer. They sould have bought a Yamaha.
This is Marie-Claire Alain, not Diane Bish.
Diane Bish wonderfully exhibited her counterpart Virgil Fox
Bach would have been pleased!
I have this recording myself.
WOULD LOVE HER TO PLAY AT MET U
Did I hear a bad note around 2:00?
I heard a lot of mistake because of too fast play 早すぎて ミスが多い Ms.
Stacatto in F?
They should have bought a Casavant.
Ya, but it's hard to knock Casavant's experience with 4000 builds vs. Kney's 95 at the time. I've played even tiny Casavant organs and been amazed at the voicing and quality.
A first rate organist - love Ms Bish - but please slow down. Music played too quickly becomes blurred, individual notes can not be heard, and technique and skill can not be appreciated.
From 2.30 on Fred Astaire - eat your twinkle toes out !!
Perfect playing, except the sound of the piece exceeds the speed of sound.
Too fast for that acoustic environment
Yes methinks a little too fast for my liking pedal work magical !
Yes, much too fast for me. She is good though
Diane just makes the organ speak. know her personally and she accompanied me at Coral Ridge
The beauty and subtleties of the piece are sacrificed to Miss Bish's delight in playing everything too fast. The registration could have been subtler too.
roller coaster conclusion....I see the push/pull exercising with the left hand is also not going to help learn this piece.
Huippua.
1:41
Fast, but well played
This piece looses so much because the tempo is way too hectic!
She ALWAYS plays too fast. The sounds become blurred and jumbled.
Why so fast, Mrs. Bishop! Are you in a hurry?
Because she can, Burt. Because she can. If you could play it as fast, you would. You or anyone who says otherwise is ... getting a lump of coal this Christmas.
'hm Sometimes anyone could play it more faster than Mrs Bishop! And than?? No, no, no I´m sure Bach didn´t composed this as an competition of velocity! I did the experience, that the most classical pieces are played to fast these days! Many serious researches improves that! Higher, wider, faster, better: What´s the point of that?? I´m sure that is not what Bach means! To all interpreter: Back to the roots! The hectic activity of today should not be the moving power of today! Sorry for my bad english, i hope you understand what i´m trying to say!! Greetings from germany, no hard feelings and be sure we know what BACH means!
Leisesturm Give me the lump of coal. This is too fast..
Indeed...why so fast?Because she can is not a valid reason. One wonders how many of the audience in attendance is clapping for her performance (flawless
as it may be) but more out of politeness?
Too fast - this was like a race to the end
Too fast, as many
ruclips.net/video/P8Z7bARLumw/видео.html you should listen this one
reglement me
What a strange console design. The stopboard positioning is terrible.
Absurdly fast, as usual.
there is never a right or wrong way to play a piece, but in this case (organs) the tempo is dictated by the feel and acoustics of the organ. I personally wouldn't play this music on those monstrous american organs with their ridiculous cheesy reed sections, but meh.
since everyone seems to criticize the tempo (me included)... we live in a time that's all about who-plays-what-how. fast = good, grimacing = good.. just be extreme and controversial and you're fine in the business of "classical music". Johann Mattheson would have beat LangLang "Mr Mime" with his wig.
Too fast. Rushed.
How unfortunate that she does not play the fugue.
Wish that the video editiing would show the complicated pedal parts.
Dislike the brash reeds.
Ending sounds like Virgil Fox.
Lawrence Krupp I have played this from memory since late teens. I do not play it so fasthat it is sped over and wonderful inner voices not discerned.
Robert Gift Sorry Robert - it is NOT too rushed and not TOO fast. I love Diane Bish's performance. What is wrong with the reeds and Fox's Ending? You need to get a life ! I agree with another comment that you sound like a no-talent purist ! NO , IT IS NOT TOO FAST ! I admire her skill . God, give that skill to me ! I only wish I had it !!
The tempo is fine but it waivers...and the hands are not always together. Bit it's fine. Excellent. Just needs a little clean-up -- and will always needs a little clean-up -- whoever plays it. I'm sure that all Diane hears now are the mistakes.
You try it in front of a paying audience. Good luck!
+Robert Gift ARGH!!! what is it with all those people who can't play the organ themselves trying to critize the greats!? To say something negative about you would be like pooping on poop!
+Nautilus Nexus If you heard me, you'd likely find nothing negative.
If you said I was playing a little too slowly, I'd disagree.
I also play the fugue, even if some think is it anti-climactic following the magnificent fantasy.
