    This is one of Bach's greatest organ fugues, and it's a shame that the Toccata is so often played by itself, without the fugue. I marvel at the way Bach fused the two subjects into one gigantic double fugue.

    • @lemenyves34
      @lemenyves34 Год назад +1

      I concur with you in that the fugue is magnificent, but I am absolutely not astonished that the toccata is often played alone, because it is an absolute marvel, the end of which leaves you speechless.🙂

    A few years ago my wife and I made the pilgrimage to Leipzig and St. Thomas Kirche. This organ, known as the Bach Organ, is installed on the side balcony of the nave. In the back of the church is a late 19th century romantic instrument of larger proportions. The original instrument is long gone and the Bach Organ is based on specifications found in a neighboring church's records. During the Soviet Union's occupation of East Germany a number of churches were razed. During the Nazi era the statue of Mendelssohn on the church grounds was destroyed because, well, Mendelssohn was a Jew who converted to Christianity. We also visited Mendelssohn's grave in Berlin.

    P.S I wonder if these were originally two seperate pieces? The Fugue seems very grave after the bravura Toccata. I don’t hear the Fugue played often here in the UK Cathedrals. They normally only play the Toccata.

    • @user-fu7zf4ck9z
      @user-fu7zf4ck9z 3 года назад +2

      They were written separately, I think there even is some doubt if these should even go together. To be fair though, most toccatas/preludes and fugues were written seperately (like BWV542, BWV564, BWV532)

    • @hugoclarke3284

      It's very common for Bach's fugues to be very distinct from the former movement, too.
      Take the E minor p&f from WTC I, for example.

      This might be the most extreme example of the toccata (or prelude) being better than the fugue.

    Stunning performance! Bravo!! BWV 540 has always been one of my favourite Bach pieces, and your performance was superb. Slightly worried to see your pedal solos performed entirely with toe, and never heal - not that it spoilt the performance, but that style would have have gotten me into trouble with my teachers when I was learning to play the Organ! :-)

    • @ColinHarvey78
      @ColinHarvey78 2 года назад +2

      When did you have organ lessons?! You would get into trouble using heels in this piece with pretty much any organ teacher. Things have moved a long way!

    • @briandsteel6711

      @@ColinHarvey78 Evidently so! "Heels" were in all the time from Bach's lifetime till when I was taught pipe organ in the 1970s! Call that 300 years, give or take. So what's changed in the past 40-plus years?! Too many people playing home organs with those stubby half-pedals?! And if "Heels" are out of fashion, why do most of the organists I see still wear shoes WITH block heels?!!

    • @johnsantrizos7638
      @johnsantrizos7638 3 года назад +7

      In the baroque period the common tuning was A=415hz, but it is known that organs were often tuned a half step UP, at A=466.8hz. A number of historic instruments have been returned to this historic pitch. The particular instrument in this video is modern and is able to transpose between 466.8hz and 415hz. 415 is used to accompany the Thomanerchor when they sing the works of Bach

      Von der Schwierigkeit ist es definitiv anspruchsvoller als viele anderen Orgelwerke und vergleichbar mit den beiden anderen hauptsächlich monothematischen Toccaten d-Moll (538) und C-Dur (564). Ich persönlich finde es etwas langsamer und gemütlicher gespielt auch schöner meistens, gerade bei so einer freundlichen Tonart wie F-Dur!

      As I mentioned in an earlier post the Bach Organ specifications are based on records from other churches in the area from their organs of the period. It is an authentic representation of Baroque organs of Bach’s time at Leipzig. The day we visited St Thomas the organist, Prof Böhme was conducting a master class on that organ. It was magnificent.
