I just use one source at a time. If the AVR is turning things on then that's a problem. I would avoid having more than one hot source to the receiver though, that's when you can confuse the receiver. It is designed to switch.

Yeah, maybe stop the Disney Dolby vision movie first, then move on to the next thing you want to do, because it must be super confused with all these signals being sent at the same time?
And usually when a device is turned off, I wait for a bit like 10 seconds before I turn it on, I bet if you do this with a $3000 AVR it will still have problems you mention, most devices at this level are sensitive.

TIP!! ONLY FOR device with Alexa support (most likely Google Home also). I'm sure this tip will get lost in the sea of comments but here it goes.
    1. Download the HEOS app and enable it with Alexa skills.
    2. Enable Digital Assistant for Xbox and download Alexa app for Xbox (Alexa skills).
    3. Make a group in Alexa and add both the Denon S760H and Xbox to group.
    4. Now you can turn on/off both with a voice command and no remote HDMI CEC issue or at lease out of sight out of mind.
If you have other devices with Alexa support adding them or creating new groups might be just the trick. I bet this works with Google Home but I don't have that so can't confirm. While not a complete fix it is a workaround that works for me. Peace!

Hi Andrew, I've been thinking about pulling the trigger and buying this Denon receiver but now I'm unsure. The other receiver that peaked my interest was the Onkyo TX-NR696. Both are currently at the same price at Best Buy. Unfortunately, every time I look up reviews I read bad reviews on both (even though there are very few bad reviews). I honestly have no idea which I should purchase. I don't own any of the newer gaming consoles and I'm really more interested in it playing my blurays and 3D movies. Any thoughts on which receiver would be a better option for me? Great video btw!!!

    • @qwazyd0gg
      @qwazyd0gg  10 месяцев назад +1

That’s a tough call. Honestly I think they’re both very similar to each other, with only small differences between the 2 that won’t matter much to you. Wattage is about the same across both, the onkyo has multi hdmi out and a pre amp (iirc), the Denon does have hdmi 2.1 which doesn’t matter for gaming but does support hdr10+ for Samsung TVs where the onkyo does not. I’d probably lean more to the Denon just due to release date and most features being native where the onkyo has either added some via software (such as atmos height) or not at all. Hope that helps!

If your Denon S760H is experiencing CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) switching problems, it likely means the automatic input switching feature based on HDMI commands from your TV or other connected devices is malfunctioning, causing unexpected source changes on your receiver; this can often be resolved by checking your CEC settings on both the Denon receiver and your TV, ensuring they are properly enabled and configured, or even trying to disable CEC altogether if the issue persists.
Key points about CEC issues with the Denon S760H:
      Check CEC settings:
Access the Denon S760H menu and navigate to the HDMI settings section.

Ensure "HDMI Control" (or a similar option) is set to "On".

Verify that the connected TV also has CEC enabled in its settings.
      "TV Audio Switching":
This setting on the Denon can cause automatic switching to the "TV Audio" input when receiving a CEC command from the TV.

If you experience unwanted switching, try setting "TV Audio Switching" to "Off" in the Denon menu.
      Potential causes for CEC issues:
Incompatible devices: Not all devices support CEC fully or may have different implementations, leading to conflicts.

Outdated firmware: Check for firmware updates on both your Denon receiver and TV.
HDMI cable quality: Using low-quality HDMI cables can sometimes cause CEC problems.
      Troubleshooting steps:
      Restart devices:
Turn off all connected devices, wait a few seconds, and then turn them back on again.

      Try a different HDMI cable:
Swap the HDMI cable connecting your TV to the Denon receiver.

      Disable CEC on other devices:
If you have multiple devices connected with CEC enabled, try disabling it on other devices one by one to isolate the issue.
      Consult the manual:
Refer to your Denon S760H user manual for specific instructions on managing CEC settings.

Alternative solution: Use a universal remote: If you cannot resolve the CEC issues, consider using a universal remote that can control all your devices independently, bypassing the need for CEC functionality.

I have an LG CX and a Denon x1700 plus all new consoles and an AppleTV and while it wasn’t as bad as what you had here it really was not a good experience. I ended up disabling CEC completely for every device and use the classic way of changing inputs myself on the Denon remote. Such a shame that it doesn’t work properly. I read if from many people on the internet and I feel like it’s really only a good solution if you have like one or maybe two devices and still need a little bit luck.
With 6 different inputs like I have (PS5,Series X, Switch, Cable TV Receiver, Apple TV and a UHD Disc Player) it just don’t know what to do.

I've experienced something very similar to this with my setup. I got the Denon X6700H in October 2020. Initially I was using it as a video switcher for; Apple TV 4K, PS5. With those sources going into the Denon, and then on to my LG CX. I had weird issues like this, whenever the HDMI signal had to do a "hand shake" with the Denon. So anytime switching from SDR to HDR/DV, and back again. Like when watching something on Netflix (on Apple TV) and I'd be watching a show in HDR, then going back to the Netflix menu screen in SDR. Apple TV was set up to do Match Rate and Content. And then even when trying to have it switch sources between the PS5 and Apple TV.
I tried switching HDMI cables. And then switching inputs. Sometimes it all worked fine. But more often then not, it would not work. Switching the Apple TV to always output HDR or DV seemed to fix it. For now now the Apple TV wasn't doing any HDMI handshaking with changing the signal. But I didn't want it to always be outputting HDR for non HDR content.
I had to bring the Denon in for service for another issue, faint audio buzz with HDMI audio. I asked about the above issue I was having. He said he had been hearing that alot with other customers using Denon and Apple TV.
But I found a solution. I use my LG CX as my video switcher. My Apple TV and PS5 first connect to the LG CX. Then eARC the audio to the Denon. And now it works. No more of the above issues.
BTW - for the service work, they needed to replace a HDMI board on my unit. Denon sent me out a refurbished unit. The warranty on that expired in October 2011. Refurbished units warranty is only good for 1 year, from original date of purchase.

I have my Apple TV set to HDR 4K with match rate and content, which allows me to still watch DV content when available but the main interface remains HDR10, which has helped a lot with some of my issues. I’ve also heard of people having audio sync issues and remote lag when trying to force DV on the main OS screen. I didn’t, but the HDR fixed my handshake issues a lot so far.

One of the primary purposes of an AVR is to be a reliable HDMI switcher. This is really bad that Denon is absolutely failing at that.
Have they released updated firmware to fix the problems yet?

    • @qwazyd0gg
      @qwazyd0gg  Год назад +5

No updates; however, I’ve spoken with other users of other AVRs and it’s mostly a universal concern with modern hdmi equipment. Most equipment no longer turns completely off (PS5/Xbox rest modes as an example), and at times will trigger a CEC handoff due to background tasks pumping a small amount of current through the console. I’ve elected to turn off CEC switching and now only use CEC for volume management and it hasn’t been a concern since.

I ran all my devices my 7 series LG TV and then ARC to the S760H receiver and it works well. I’m using a harmony remote though which is sending a signal to tell everything to turn on because sometimes the CEC does miss that. I haven’t had this issue where yours is switching between devices. I bought this receiver at Costco brand new last week. I set it up and ran through some different audio to test it and it sounded fantastic. I then though it would be great to be able to control the volume and power through my firestick remote like my last receiver. I got as far as the firestick setup having me press the power button to see if it turned the receiver off. Literally had sparks come out the bottom of the Denon and loud pop noises. The thing was hooked up for like 2 hours at this point and it was a paperweight.
I exchanged it and am not terrified to set up CEC. I'm actually putting the firestick to sleep before switching to PS4 and vice versa because I'm afraid to blow it up. Exactly how you want to feel with a brand new receiver.

Allow me to throw in my two cents and another gripe I am searching for a solution. So I just bought the s760h and a Sony A80J TV. Get this. The Denon will take and input from my old Oppo Blu-ray and play sound just fine thru the Blu-ray port on the Denon. But when I plug the HDMI arc/earc cable between the TV and the Denon, no audio will come thru from the Blu-ray anymore. The moment I unplug the arc/earc from the Denon, the audio comes right back from the Blu-ray player (which I also use to play just CDs). I am also having a bad handshake issue between the Denon and the Sony TV thru that arc/earc. Sometimes it will switch over to displaying the Denon setup (when I hit the setup button on the Denon) and sometimes it wont. It doesnt many how many times I select the input on the TV to be the arc/earc port, it simply will not display the Denon setup screen. Then for no reason sometimes it will. This is driving me nuts. Denon support is just horrible. You have people reading a script. If you ask them anything remotely technical they cant answer it. So if we cant talk with a REAL support person at Denon then what? Sony tech support was no help either, but at least the person on the other end of the line seemed more technically competent. I am at a loss. I don't know if this is an issue with Denon or Sony. But the real issue that may cause that Denon to go back is the sound quality. Man oh Man is it bright? To Shrill levels bright where it hurts your ears even when the volumn is not turned up that high. I don't know if there is some setting that needs to be changed, but this is unacceptable.

I know this problem which I have with my old Onkyo & LG Smart TV. The issue was about hand shaking between TV and receiver. Ronvolt was mentioning about it. The solution I found from a forum was that I need to plug both power cords out for 10 seconds and then plug in together in order to make handshake with each other. It actually works everytime but it's a really nerve racking thing with this HDMI 2.... changes.

I've manually switched out of Spotify or anything that uses the CPU using the "Net" button, then reenabled ARC on the TV. That seems to help it. You need to switch to "Net" and back to get it working if you're already out of "Net" input. If you get out of "Net" input before then the issue will not occur. Something is happening in the implementation that makes it not receive the audio while it thinks it does. I've got an Onkyo NR 636 and LG OLED Smart TV if that's any help.

I currently have the LG C1, Denon AVR-S760H, Nvidia Shield, Xbox Series X, and a Tivo Bolt. My issue seemed to get worse when LG put out a firmware update so I thought it was LG but by reading the comments it seems like it happen on different TVs also and Denon and Marantz AV receivers seem to be the cause of the problem. The way I get it to stop is to select Live TV input for a few minutes and then I'm able to select then an HDMI input and it stays on it. I have not done this yet but was thinking about contacting Brent & Adam from Merta AV and Phil Jones from Sound United because before HDMI 2.1came out he was doing a bunch of RUclips videos about HDI 2.1. I had the similar problem. In my case it automatically wanted to change to ROKU. I solved it by turning off TV audio switching,(In HDMI setup)& turning the last two settings off. I also dedicated my Pass Source as My Intel NUC HTPC.
My real problem Is Dolby Decoding through my Intel NUC/HDMI; Whether it be Dolby Digtital, Dolby Atmos, through my LG nano 91, and my Denon s670H when playing BD files with Power DVD, it loses it's audio signal and there is momentary silence...so far my only remedy is using Power DVD sound decoding instead of Dolby. DTS plays good. I have updated the HDMI firmware on my Intel NUC, and purchased 8k cables from Amazon, and none of these cables pass the built in Denon Cable Tests....With every firmware update from Denon I hope it will fix the HDMI Dolby decoding. I don't have problems with any other source except my Intel NUC10i7FNB. Very frustrating, because with this S760H I am now on my fourth Denon receiver, over the years. The selling point for me on this receiver was the built in Bluetooth for headphones, which is actually quite mediocre. I have considered switching to Onkyo, or Yamaha, but I've already spent $495.00 with tax on this receiver. I really give this receiver a 4.0 out of 5 because of the switching problems and the Dolby decoding.
Quite a long time later: 09-23-22
Solved problem by limiting max resolution to EXACTLY what I have, 4k 60hz. Period. Now works w/o problem, apparently it kept looking for a 8k TV/monitor.

I really hope someone can shed some light on my issue. Never mind the annoying cec issue but my setup is a Samsung q90t and an Xbox series x. I randomly experience signal loss when starting an app or more commonly a game. I then have to reset the whole system and try again to get it to work. Sometimes it works fine with no issues. I've tried doing a reset on the Denon. I've tried different cables. So I'm at a loss now. Very frustrating. I didn't expect this out of a Denon receiver.

I get this sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10 times) with my series x as well. I have to hold the Xbox button on the controller and the signal comes back when the menu comes up. I don’t know what causes it unfortunately, and the replication is super inconsistent. It never happened when I would go directly to the TV so I know it’s something with the Denon.

Best I can tell, from my experience, is that CEC DOES NOT OPERATE LIKE A USB. So no unique identifier per device. Generally, the design of CEC assumed all devices on at all times. And each device can control power on and power off and well as allow itself to power down and on. I avoid all of this by using a harmony universal remote. Program your settings and devices and be done with even needing the other remotes or CEC.

I disabled all CEC controls on my consoles, TV, and amp as a workaround. Universal volume works but there’s no automatic control over input switching or powering devices. The issues stem from modern peripherals “sleep” more often than turning off. When voltage or wattage bumps slightly say during a drm verification or checking for an OTA update, it will inadvertently engage a slew of CEC triggers. Downfall is CEC isn’t really regulated as a standard, so there’s too many variants to try and play nice with. All in all I’m still happy with just universal volume on my remotes and have grown accustomed to manually switching inputs.

I only get hit maybe one out of 10 uses with something this extreme. Usually the CEC just turns on everything everytime I boot up the amp, which is fine because my consoles enable rest mode again automatically within 10 minutes. It's just when it's bad like this that it sucks.

@@qwazyd0gg I had the same problem with this receiver and CEC. It seems like all of the components (especially the Sony X90J ) were fighting with each other with the "handshake" order which the HDMI cables and component process that they go thru.. Now I use my old Harmony Touch with the Harmony Hub, and the hub solves all of my switching and HDMI order issues. The hub & remote commands each component and the order that it comes on. This is a lifesaver, and I don't have to use all of the remotes. I only use the Nvidia shield and Apple 4kTV remotes for specific functions (since I don't feel like programming them fully into the hub - which is RF & Bluetooth). This is the only solution that I can come up with for multiple components and the switching problems.

    • @frankg.2949
      @frankg.2949 2 года назад +1

I have never used the Sofa Baton line of remotes, but I think they have a hub also, but they won't have that extensive database of remote codes that Harmony has. That by itself is worth more than the remotes. I guess that is why they got of the hardware business.

I just went thru the BEST BUY warranty process. They came out to my house four times to repair a TV. But, the first two times. The Geek squad guys were always looking to disable CEC. They mentioned, it creates more harm than good. Majority of the time, it's the main reason consumers think their AV equipment is busted.
