so glad I remembered this song today. I think this might be the soundtrack to a new chapter in my life. I wrote that then it got to "You could surely try to be more alive" and I was like, "Yeah, that's me."
This was one of my favorite albums back in like 2008. Hits every aspect of music that I tend to fall in love with. Good drum grooves. Sicko synth parts and female vocals. And it’s just catchy as hell.
So obviously, technically, "indie rock" should simply refer to music that is released on independent record labels (or independent of labels altogether), and thus is of a bit more odd or rougher style than 'mainstream' music. But it has come to mean a sort of loose style and sound in and of itself, and this song reminds me of a certain time in popular music (and in my own life) when that trend was first emerging. Bands like The Arcade Fire and Yeah Yeah Yeahs were suddenly top-sellers, and while those weren't even my favorite bands of the time, it was a cool moment to be plugged into what was happenin'.
