He was an ancient warrior and once he trespassed the life/death realm, he became plain evil and demonic. He was a force to be defeated. Also, Anthony Hopkins’s Van Helsing, was excellent but he was kind of a jerk sometimes, and he was pretty impolite with a very dark sense of humor. It works perfectly in the movie, but in the book he was very serious, respectful and polite, a gentleman. Finally, in the last quarter of the book, Mina Harker pretty much becomes the bravest character of the novel: she volunteers herself as bait so Jonathan Harker, Van Helsing and their friends could get to Dracula, against their will. She doesn’t love him, she wants him dead.
@@carl_anderson9315 You're right, the Dracula/Mina romance isn't in the book, but the film actually accounts for that in the scene where Mina throws pages from her diary into the sea. Gary Oleman was and still is the best Dracula ever. Every version of Dracula in the movie he embodied with perfection. I also love how it isn't a predictable Dracula movie, it shows us how human he is and why he turned to the dark side. He's the most developed Dracula on film.

I saw this film the day it came out in theaters. I consider it to be the most memorable and happiest time when I was in high school. Now that you mention the Vader parallels I can see something there. I have always considered Depalma's Phantom of the Paradise to be a huge stepping stone for the characterization of Vader.
Same! I really wish the Dark Universe gets rebooted with Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing again. There's so much potential if they just keep it dark, dramatic, and fantastical!

Keanus “British” accent is the gold standard to terrible British accents Sometimes there are actors that go overboard and some that are really trying and just can’t do it. I love ya Keanu, but you’re always gonna have that surfer accent.
People like to give that title to Dick Van Dyke, but while he was being over the top in a fun kid's movie, Keanu Reeves is playing this straight serious which is what makes it soooo much worse
Gary Oldman’s performance as Dracula was a complete tour de force. When casting the lead for “Dracula 2000”, they had trouble finding actors who were willing to play the role because the actors were afraid their performance would look weak compared to what Gary Oldman did as Dracula. Gerard Butler was the one who was gutsy enough to go there and was cast as Dracula.
Dracula 2000 is my third favorite vampire movie. My first favorite being of course the Bram Stoker's version, and the second being Fright Night 1 & 2. Gerard Butler does a terrific job in Dracula 2000, and I can't see anyone else acting in his place in the movie 😍!
I actually yelled out "Yay!" when I saw this upload. Your review is like a Halloween treat! I always think about Dracula this time of year. This gothic romance will always have a special place in my heart 🥀💔
Man, you were so passionate about this review, I’m going to watch this right after!!! I haven’t seen it since it came out and even so, I don’t remember much about it. Can’t wait! Thanks Jeremy!!!
The score really elevates the movie. Oldman and Hopkins carry a lot of film given how terrible Reeves and Ryder are in their roles. The effects, costumes, and sets are tremendous, it's a fantastic work of art that's hamstrung a bit by some miscasting. Again.. the score.. the score is incredible.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie and I had such a hard girl crush on Gary Oldman .... I used to play this over and over and over - the soundtrack was amazing 🖤🖤❤🖤🖤
This is an awesome film. The best Dracula imo. If Coppola’ had cast Brits to play Harker and Murray with acting chops, that fact would be incontestable. The costumes, the effects, the score, the mood, and Oldman’s and Hopkin’s performances, all top notch.
The music for this movie is amazing and also a big part of inspiration for Bloodborne's score. Wojciech Kilar has composed some of the best movie soundtracks out there
Was halfway through watching his Scream 4 review, when I found out my roommate had never seen any of the Scream movies. So I bought a bottle of whiskey and we started watching it... he had walked in right when Jeremy Jahns had started talking about the poor doors, so when the first door got stabbed, he said we should take a shot every time a door foils the killer.... I don't even remember finishing the movie because by the time they got to the car part and he ran around to both car doors as she locked him out...I was hammered.
Imagine telling someone in 1992 that Keanu Reeves was gonna become this beloved icon and star of 2 of the best action franchises ever, they would have thought you were on meth.
...you must be really young. Reeves was a star long before the Wick & Matrix franchises made him popular with the Millennial & Z crowd. Keanu Reeves was cast in this movie, because he was hot,one of the top male stars, in '92.
I love Jeremy’s reviews and I was bummed when theatrical movies slowed down, however I enjoy even more the reviews that he’s doing now! I completely agree with his review of this version of Dracula and the review makes me look forward to rewatching this great movie. Thanks
Until he mentioned Keenu Reeves was the protagonist I'd forgot and have been thinking automatically Johnny Depp had been it seemed up his alley. It's been so long since I'd seen this movie and only remember Gary Oldman's Dracula character & Winona his bride.
Loved that line connection you illustrated at the end directly between Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Your insights serve me well.😁😉 I'm officially sold on giving this a chance. Its been something ive written off too long, thanks
I've been watching your reviews for a while now, but have never subb'ed, until now. I feel, pretty much exactly the same way regarding this beautiful piece of art. Everything about it including the zaniness and shocking accents make this experience what it is. Watching this movie today I still get the same vibe from the very first viewing, even more so, because I know what's coming! Great review!!
This is one of my favorite movies. I could talk about it forever. The costuming. The music. The atmosphere. Gary Oldman. Insanely good. Lucy in the white gown scene, Dracula "See me now" scene, both of the church scenes. Damn. I absolutely fell in love with the gothic romance tone of this movie. They captured it really well. All the small characters, sets and the effects were well done and added even more charm to it. I never expected you to love the movie so much as well.
The photography is not impressive, in that sense Nosferatu by FW Murnau is much better. The film has a superficial story of the same level of depth as the weak Fifty Shades of Grey.
That was my favorite movie as a kid. I was in love with Wiona and Keanu. Keanu was great as comical relieve and Winona is the most beautiful, talented and funny woman to me. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WINONA!!
When he crawls the wall, I crawl out my skin. It's a crazed, sensual, horror fairytale. The first time I saw it thought Keanu was comic relief so I roll with it.
Thank God. My heart dropped a beat and I thought you were going to nitpick this movie or thrash it a bit. Ever since I saw first this movie it's always been my favorite horror film. And you're absolutely right in calling it timeless. Amazing movie and incredible piece of art/cinema.
Outstanding review per usual. One of my favorite films. The practical effects, sound, tone and overall atmosphere, all spot on. Oldman is amazing and Anthony Hopkins as Helsing was also a standout.
When I was in school we watched this movie in my Film Lit class. I loved this film so I was glad my teacher chose it. We watched half of it one day and the next day we finished it but for the second half we had this older and quite reserved substitute. She sat at her desk with her jaw dropped during the Lucy coming back to life scene. She couldn’t believe what we were watching lol 😆
You never cease to amaze me, Jeremy 😊 For me, a HUGE vampire kid in high school, this movie was my settling argument to my buddy about who would win in a fight: vampire or werewolf 😎
I love Dracula's red armour in this movie. Actually in the Game of Thrones novels the Bolton's are described as wearing pink/red armour thats ment to look like a man who's skin has been flayed, and I always imagined them wearing a similar armour to Drac's. To bad they didn't use that design in the show.
@@hennessyapplejuice8331 Yeah, I really hate the way color is used in most medieval/fantasy movies and TV shows. Its always just black, brown, and grey. When in reality medieval life was full of color. Brightly colored clothing, architecture, and decorations were not uncommon back then.
Whoa that is so interesting, thank you for sharing that! A lot of people (me included) would not have known that! Now I will think of that every time I watch this movie :)
Some illustrations of Roose and Ramsay have them wearing pretty much exact replicas of the Dracula armour from this movie. Roose is, from an aesthetic point of view (dark, brooding, pale complexion, sinister reputation, undergoes constant bloodletting, etc), a stereotypical vampire and I think George Martin meant it as a homage.
Why mention a perfect goddess? Like Oldman...he said everything that needed to be said through his acting. She owned what little screen time she had. But, like you, I can see she commanded her role. She was, at once, beautiful and terrifying.
I'm so glad you did a review on this movie, it being such an old movie now. It's one of my all time favorites. I re-watch this movie over and over. Its honestly one of my top 5 favorites.
I knew going into this video it would either be Awesometacular or right next to it, but when Jeremy trails that "is..." you KNOW it's Awesometacular. I need to go rewatch this now
The funny thing is Coppola and Lucas ARE friends. There is a club on Spielberg's documentary called the Movie Brats. The members are Spielberg (of course), Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma, George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola. They always get together and discuss their work. So the comparison of Dracula and Darth Vader is not an impossibility.
I love absolutely everything about this movie. Even Keanu's earnest performance. After I watched it for the first time, I bought the soundtrack, the screenplay, the novelization (yes, not the actual Bram Stoker novel, though I read that too). I enjoyed Anthony Hopkins more in this movie than THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. I've seen this movie so many times I've lost count. I didn't know who Gary Oldman was before DRACULA, but I sure as heck was a fan after. This movie will never be topped by another Dracula remake. Coppola nailed it.
Actually got to see this in a theater back at the beginning of the year....when you could still have a full crowd in a theater. :( The week before I'd seen Legend, so two childhood classics seen in theaters in barely one weeks time.
Feels great to hear someone love this movie like I do! To me it's not only the best Dracula movie ever made but also the N1 vampire movie and I'd even put it high up there in the greatest horror movies ever made too!
Just re-watched it three times! It's sooooo good. It's so BOLD and the work Coppola does to unsettle you without calling attention to itself is incredible.
Fun Fact: Oldman had a severe drinking problem during this time and stayed in character between takes, was constantly butting heads with Coppola and the top brass gang, was definitely a fun time 4 all on set. Btw, the first time I saw the part where Lucy’s bedroom windows exploded with blood while screaming/exorcist vomited blood all over Anthony Hopkins while he was screaming back at the “Devil’s Concubine!! >8•O” gave me nightmares for a month no joke
True. Winona said she got along great with Gary during rehearsals, and then they started fighting during production because of his drinking problems. I believe he’s drunk during the scene where he licks the blood off the switchblade. Gary was apparently going through a nasty divorce then.
Couldn't agree more. I reckon I'm a couple of years older than you. I saw this when I was 14. Left an impression that lasts to this day. Very faithful to the novel too and remains the best adaptation to date. Good man and great review.
Amazing movie. My favourite scene: Nina walking through the maze to find Lucy having sex with Dracula in his werewolf form. It's so beautifully shot and the music is incredible!
Amazing scene. So carnal and raw and the special effects and music pull you in. It’s haunting and disturbing the first time you see it but also exciting
I love this movie, but it will forever drive me mad that they almost had perfect casting and the studio ruined it! Love Keanu, but this role was not for him.
Best decisions Francis Ford Coppola took after being named the next "Orson Welles": -Casting her own daughter for a cash grab sequel - Casting Ted Logan as a british person -Making a Robin Williams comedy with Bill Cosby.
Being an unprofessional ego maniac on films like Apocalypse Now, The Cotton Club and One From The Heart, even threatening suicide if the studio executives didn't let him get his own way. Basically running his own studio American Zoetrope into the ground with his "vision" and forced to direct movies for the next 20 years just to pay off his debts. Also, hiring a convicted child molester to direct the Jeepers Creepers films. I love some of Coppola's films for sure, but when he comes out and says Marvel movies are "despicable" just because they're successful...
The casting the daughter complaint always bugged me. Dude worked with his ENTIRE family. Nicolas Cage wouldn't have an acting career if he wasn't related to him. Francis' Dad scored a bunch of his movies. At some point somebody's gonna get hired for the wrong job so a mistake happened. Sofia found what she was good at after and she's got a good thing going now. Godfather III isn't even that bad. Chill.
In 1996, making a comedy with Robin Williams and Bill Cosby was a good decision. There's no director in the world at the time that would've said no to making that so you can't really fault FFC. It's like criticizing the Buffalo Bills for drafting OJ Simpson.
Quincy's hat scene where all three suitors are meeting Lucy. Quincy has his hat in hand. Then doesn't. Then does. Then doc sits down no hat. He stands up with hat and hands and it's crushed. Hands it over to Quincy. Stood out to me to no end with every viewing lol
My favorite vampire movie with Lost Boys coming in second. Keanu’s accent never bothered me really. Everybody played their part well to me. Gary Oldman killed it
2022 and I completely love and watch this movie at least three times a week. Gary Oldman’s performance was fucking amazing!! And this review is on point!!!
I remember seeing a billboard on a bus in San Diego in like 90? 93, maybe? It was this faded tan marble with a gargoyle face and bold red lettering and I immediately felt 'gothic' rolling off it in waves. I wasn't at all familiar with basically any of these actors, the director or Bram Stoker but man that movie got me into cinema as an art form. I started collecting (and still do) old LD releases (got a copy of Bladerunner signed by some of the production staff, that was a highlight for me!). But this movie started my love affair with cinema. . . .I'm so glad it did, too. Thanks for making me want to break it out again, Jeremy. Been a big fan of your work for years now.
Say what you want about Keanu's accent, but one of the most memorable scenes in the film was when Keanu laid eyes on the young and recently rejuvenated Dracula walking around London. Keanu was so freaked out his doggone hair turned gray! 😂😂😂
This movie to this date is the best Dracula film adaptation, regardless of its faults. It even enhances the tragic background of Dracula, because in the book he is actually not so well developed as a character. He is more like an evil presence that influences and manipulates, than an actual villain with his own motives and goals.
How silly the inclusion of the romance between Mina and Dracula in the film. Since there is no romance in the book. This change in history reminds me of the myth of Pygmalion. This story is narrated in chap. 10 of The Metamorphoses by Ovid and tells the story of Pygmalion who is disappointed in women, he swears never to have a relationship with any woman, he finds a statue and falls in love with her, this statue comes to life. The film represents a type of idealized lover that women would like to have in their mediocre daily lives.
I saw this in a theater when it first came out. The visuals on the special effects were stunning. How FFC turned it into a love story was really creative, First time I ever felt compassion for a vampire (character in a movie). Though the content precludes it from being an Iconic film, The Greatest Story Ever Told' or even his own Apocalypse Now, over all I think it a great film and work of art. Well done.
I feel like both of your points are true because he and Winona got “married” in real life but also she and Johnny were in a relationship of sorts. Either way it works
@@chrisd653 The fact everyone keeps bringing it up Keanu as the sole and only mistake of this movie proofed you wrong. He may be just a supporting actor in this movie. But his Keanu'ed British accents stand out like a sore thumb. It's hindsight 20/20. But Johnny Depp clearly has more range as an actor than Keanu, not to mention a penchant for the quirky gothic period movie. He also fares a bit better in the accents dept.
I just saw it for the first time... this movie is beyond shit. I'm guessing nostalgia is the only reason people are praising it. I'm genuinely shocked at how bad that movie was
Love this film. I use the train and carriage approach to Castle Dracula in class whenever I’m teaching writing for atmosphere. The visuals are identical to the original text description so it’s brilliant for helping kids to ‘see’ what they’re reading. And (here’s where I stick up for Keanu) I love Winona Ryder but her accent is pretty shocking as well.
The most underrated funny Keanu moment is when he does a good old fashioned Bill and Ted WHOA when Dracula turns into a bat.
They could just have adapted his character to be American (one of them already is American) and most complaints would go away.

But the artistry and Gary's performance are what stuck with me and as an adult it's even more astounding to me. One of my absolute favorites. Thanks for this review!

I actually snuck in to see this film when I was 12, and even being a very young person I thought the film was exquisite and was just blown away by the artistry. I'm now 42 and it's still one of my favorite films of All-Time!!
Keanu Reeves tried so hard in this film but he just failed. God bless him.
God loves a trier.
still breathtaking
Yeah but I still love this movie. I wish we could get a good remake.
He’s an actor with a specific set of skills.
It’s fine u just watched him review it
Absolutely one of my favorites. Gary Oldman is outstanding in this.
Gary Oleman was and still is the best Dracula ever. Every version of Dracula in the movie he embodied with perfection. I also love how it isn't a predictable Dracula movie, it shows us how human he is and why he turned to the dark side. He's the most developed Dracula on film.
@LOYAL TO THE FOIL b@llocks
To be fair bela Lugosi is the one who set the bar for skyrocketing the popularity of Dracula movies.
i understand that it has the old time look of dracula in a modern film in van helsing but gary oldman in the best arc version ever. He was so much more evil and in van helsing Roxburgh seems more like a sherlock holmes villan than dracula

Claes Bang was very good as Dracula
I saw this film the day it came out in theaters. I consider it to be the most memorable and happiest time when I was in high school.
Now that you mention the Vader parallels I can see something there. I have always considered Depalma's Phantom of the Paradise to be a huge stepping stone for the characterization of Vader.
The Hugh Jackman Van Helsing is my top guilty pleasure movie.
Same! I really wish the Dark Universe gets rebooted with Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing again.
There's so much potential if they just keep it dark, dramatic, and fantastical!

SAME! Great movie.
It's terrible, but i'd still watch it if it was on.
fun fact: Quincy Morris, in the movie is a decedent of the Morris clan and carries the Vampire Killer whip.
A forgotten masterpiece Jeremy! The 4K ultra HD edition is already out though here in Europe and its universal. The transfer is absolutely amazing and one of the best you can have in your collection.
In this movie, young Dracula - Gary Oldman looks like Johnny Depp, especially with the glasses.
Nah
Depp as Harker could’ve added another layer to the romantic dynamic between Mina and Vlad/Dracula. I thought the same while watching.

Keanus “British” accent is the gold standard to terrible British accents
Sometimes there are actors that go overboard and some that are really trying and just can’t do it.
I love ya Keanu, but you’re always gonna have that surfer accent.
It is to the British accent what Tom Cruise's performance in 'Far and Away' was to the Irish accent. Lol!
People like to give that title to Dick Van Dyke, but while he was being over the top in a fun kid's movie, Keanu Reeves is playing this straight serious which is what makes it soooo much worse
@@marisp2588 Lmao! Forgot all about Dick Van Dykes 'Cock-a-Nee' accent. "Orlright Mary Poppins!" Hilarious!

Dracula 2000 is so different than the 1992 version. One’s a gothic romance, the other is a lot fun.
Dracula 2000 was super trash
I personally loved the performance of the guy who played Dracula in Hugh Jackmans Van Helsing movie.
I actually yelled out "Yay!" when I saw this upload. Your review is like a Halloween treat! I always think about Dracula this time of year. This gothic romance will always have a special place in my heart 🥀💔
Dracula: "I have been searching for you. You will become vampires and we shall live forever."
Mina: "That would be most good, Dracula. Most good."
I felt this.
Jonathan Harker: That would be most excellent.
Dracula: this isn’t working, can we have a like a topless scene?

My other favorite movie he did is Immortal Beloved . He's just amazing and so diverse. Another soundtrack I loved
Wynona wasn't bad in this movie, c'mon.
Now,I'm gonna be on the lookout for the vinyl.
You missed a trick by not calling this movie.....
"AWESOMEDRACULA"

Comparing dracula to darth vader is pretty profound. I never thought of it that way
Imagine telling someone in 1992 that Keanu Reeves was gonna become this beloved icon and star of 2 of the best action franchises ever, they would have thought you were on meth.
Mel Gibson did the same.
Why? He already had Bill and Ted and Point Break under his belt? They’re both great films.
@@XxDamien435xX exactly! Dudes always been dope.

Two of the best action franchises? The matrix was 1/3 lol
I love Jeremy’s reviews and I was bummed when theatrical movies slowed down, however I enjoy even more the reviews that he’s doing now! I completely agree with his review of this version of Dracula and the review makes me look forward to rewatching this great movie. Thanks
Got damn, Johnny Depp as Jonathan Harker would have made this THE PERFECT DRACULA...
It's a shame Johnny Depp and Anthony Hopkins never got to work together on this.
As opposed to just "the best" Dracula/vampire movie, agreed. Perfection ever eludes us.
Until he mentioned Keenu Reeves was the protagonist I'd forgot and have been thinking automatically Johnny Depp had been it seemed up his alley. It's been so long since I'd seen this movie and only remember Gary Oldman's Dracula character & Winona his bride.
would have been more comedic
Not to mention he was with Winona Ryder back then iirc... would've made it even better.
Loved that line connection you illustrated at the end directly between Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Your insights serve me well.😁😉
I'm officially sold on giving this a chance.
Its been something ive written off too long, thanks
Hell yeah! This is one of my all time favorite movies and I really wanted to hear Jeremys take on it.
I was stoked with awesometacular review. One of my favorites for sure
Jeremy straight up looks like a Jedi Knight these days.
Ben Barnes!
You make jokes, but he literally looks like Taron Malicos from Jedi: Fallen Order. Look him up, it's identical!
One of my all time favourite movies. The artistry on display from almost every department is incredible.
Agree, The costumes is fantastic!
This movie won the Oscars for Costume and for Makeup/Hair. Well-deserved.
Agreed 100%! It's in my top 10 movies of all time for sure!
The photography is not impressive, in that sense Nosferatu by FW Murnau is much better.
The film has a superficial story of the same level of depth as the weak Fifty Shades of Grey.
This is one of my favourite movies of all time. It's utterly gorgeous and a brilliant Gothic Love/Horror story. Oldman is a fantastic Dracula.
I don't like it 😂
I agree. Just saw Nosferatu, and it does not even come close to this!
Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula is extremely good and a masterpiece
As opposed to the room, which is extremely bad, and also a masterpiece!
That movie kinda sucked and Keanu was dog shit in it. But the settings, Gary Oldmans performance, and opening prologue were actually really good.
WofulAverage8 but still it’s a masterpiece I can overlook the Keanu Reeves issue
It's just not The Godfather movies The Conversation and Apocalypse Now.
Marcel Zachary Apocalypse Now is in my Top 5 favorite movies of the 1970’s

Hollywood produced this one too though...
Thank God. My heart dropped a beat and I thought you were going to nitpick this movie or thrash it a bit. Ever since I saw first this movie it's always been my favorite horror film. And you're absolutely right in calling it timeless. Amazing movie and incredible piece of art/cinema.
What I like about this movie is that all of the effects were done in camera and reminiscent of the 1920s and 1930s movies.
Outstanding review per usual. One of my favorite films. The practical effects, sound, tone and overall atmosphere, all spot on. Oldman is amazing and Anthony Hopkins as Helsing was also a standout.
The effects are so masterly beautiful.
Indeed. This is a love letter to cinema. Like Ford Coppola's legacy for filmmakers.
I jump on this review as soon as it come through.
You never cease to amaze me, Jeremy 😊
For me, a HUGE vampire kid in high school, this movie was my settling argument to my buddy about who would win in a fight: vampire or werewolf 😎
Jeremy is starting to look like Dracula. I dig it.
Come to think of it GOT didn't have any colors in it,might as well been shot in black and white
@@magicknight13 Same ! Thanks dude great anecdote.
Dear God, how could he not mention Monica Bellucci? If there’s ever a reason not to get out of bed, that is most definitely it ❤️😈

Couldn't agree with you more! Yeah, even if this isn't Keanu's best performance I liked him in places.
Gary Goldman said he wanted to do this movie just to say the words " I've crossed oceans of time to find you.'

I love this movie, but it will forever drive me mad that they almost had perfect casting and the studio ruined it! Love Keanu, but this role was not for him.
A passionate and well thought out review. Good job Jeremy.
Best decisions Francis Ford Coppola took after being named the next "Orson Welles":
-Casting her own daughter for a cash grab sequel
- Casting Ted Logan as a british person
-Making a Robin Williams comedy with Bill Cosby.
@@chesskinge And Godfather Part III had Bridget Fonda in the cast in a smaller role. Maybe they could have just swapped the roles around!

I used to watch this movie every Halloween when I was a child. It's one of my favorite movies and is the reason Gary Oldman is my favorite actor.

Truly brilliant film, I also watched it in my early teens and it has Stuck with me since.
Good review, well done
Say what you want about Keanu's accent, but one of the most memorable scenes in the film was when Keanu laid eyes on the young and recently rejuvenated Dracula walking around London. Keanu was so freaked out his doggone hair turned gray! 😂😂😂
That intro is the best intro in movie history. Chills anytime I watch it
This movie to this date is the best Dracula film adaptation, regardless of its faults.
Well done.
This movie would've gone up in quality drastically if Johnny Depp was cast in the role...
I disagree. Keanu reeves isn't the star of the movie. He costars, but gary old man carries the film.
