Straight cuts and an insert are the way to go if welding on a big truck frame, this isn't a light c channel hotrod frame that doesn't have much surface area. if the weld isn't strong, it don't matter what kind of cut you make its going to crack. semi-truck frames twist with immense loads, therefore if you do a 45 degree or anything other than a straight vertical cut you are subjecting the weld to twist over a wider area of the frame and it will actually crack easier. Big truck frames are heat treated so 95% of anyone welding on them will make the cut section brittle so it makes no sense to make the brittle section any larger than it needs to be. The way he did it in the video is how most shops do it, is stronger than it was originally as a single frame and achieves his goal.

I thought that the way to cut to welding it is Z but it looks great , this is no first time that i see this way , if it could be bad , nobody do iton this way

Not done right! Straight cuts are vertical pressure points. For every degree it’s cut towards a 45 adds 5 tons of resistance!

Are you going to add another frame rail inside the frame rail?? Have it at least 5ft on both sides of the cut??

Why a straight cut and wield? Z cut or angle is safer and stronger. Im just saying.

That's how I do it. I figure it is not the cut that holds it together, more so the weld. Thanks for asking!

I agree. a angle or z provides more weld surface.. ie stronger weld.

@@turbo1438 A proper weld is stronger than parent metal. The General Motors upfitter manual shows vertical splices and those are "factory best practices". My pipeliner welding instructor/ranch owner does frames on the side when he's off the road and all those are butt welds. He could weld the proverbial cat's ass to a plate glass window if they made filler rod for cat. Heat treated frans cab be welded safely with proper preheat and slow cool down. I'm just a mechanic who welds but I find the smart guys and follow them around. Works for nearly everything!

Welds are not flexible, thus they can crack when the frame flex, they need to be plated and bolted and of course welded, and the cut is totally wrong

I’ve built 8 extendos now over ten years, the Z looks great but at the e d of the day, it’s about what works for each person.
Strait cut works for me, mag drill all unused holes thru the sleeve. Put hard grade bolts, and move on……
