HOLD UP JINSHI CHILL🥵 - The Apothecary Diaries Episode 2 REACTION!
Cara's reaction to Jinshi being almost the same as MaoMao is so hilarious I love it
Cara gives major MaoMao energy😭
Fr, I legitimately didn't realize there was supposed to be legit romantic vibes in this show for a WHILE cuz Jinshi is so creepy and pushy, ESPECIALLY in the early episodes. Hell, even the hair moment in this episode STILL reads as uncomfortable and sinister to me, and it's refreshing to see someone who doesn't react to it like "ooooOOOOooo"
Cara with FMC vibes 😭
Just a note about Maomao's reactions to Jinshi:
Don't forget... Maomao was raised in a brothel.
She has seen every conceivable variation of "rizz", and she sees completely through Jinshi's attempts to manipulate her. She ain't having none of it.
Also both things can be true. It's comedic it's funny AND creepy and "problematic". If he were unattractive, this would never be kosher.
Maomao: i dont like you, please stop touching me
Jinshi: invades peesonal space and touches without consent while preaching about chasity and virtue
Fandom: LOLOLOLOLOL SO CUTE
I want to like your comment but you're at 69 likes and I don't want to ruin that.

16:05 oh no, Maomao isn't a child 😅She's 17 at the start. She's described as a thin, short girl in the novel (probably both genetics and nutritional causes). And since this anime skips time frequently, her age probably won't be the same after each arc. Also Jinshi and her are actually pretty close in age (but there's a bit of a spoiler-ish element in specifying it so I won't lol).
Mao at the start 17 years old, Jinshi is 18. Well, it is a design choice. There's also two mangas with different designs for maomao. In one she looks more mature, in another (much more popular) she looks like this. She does look young, but who cares. Don't be creeps, it's just anime.
I believe that they also use similar age and birthdays as ancient China (as in, they count age from the start of the year, regardless of when her birthday is)
@@craigpayne3265Not exactly. It is true that when being ask how old they are, they would tell their age as "xx yrs old this year", but they still celebrate their birthday, and that is the day they really seeing them as "xx yrs old".
BTW, many regions in China also think that the time baby spent in their mother's belly should be counted as their age, so babies are automatically 1yr old at birth😂
@@McDinglefart_69 This is a spoiler! He's supposed to be a 25 year old Eunuch here 😂😂
“Mao” in Chinese language means “cat”. So her image as a cat is very suitable 😂
also when you say mao mao it's kinda like kitty cat or that's what I heard
i wonder why mao zedong was so called ... xD
@@fjoergyn While a funny thought it is a different Mao in his name as in it is pronounced differently with a different tones and while in english letters looks similar it isnt the same word
@@MrJpc1234 Thats interesting
Just wanted to say that not everyone in the rear palace has been kidnapped. Most are there either by choice or family duty.
And some were legitimately sold by their actual family.
chocolate wasnt eaten so often and so casually in the past like we do it nowadays, so the effects like helping with blood-pressure(?) and increase of serotonin production feel way more noticeable for the people from the past (with the addition of all the other stuff Maomao added to those chocolates). our bodies are very much used to the effects making them way milder in comparison
When I first saw this anime, based on the fact that cacao is a New World product and therefore can't have reached China before 1500s during the start of the Columbian exchange, I thought the anime was Ming Dynasty. But turns out is alternate Tang dynasty era according to what I asked of manga readers without too much spoilers.
"She's a child!" - She's 17 at the start of the story. The world is not America for a start and judging everything by your own standards is silly. Going by that era of China, girls would usually be considered adults around age 16 and be working, also they'd be eligible for marriage.
The Emperor needs an heir to legitimise his rule. The court is a very competitive place with lots of powerful families, officials and even those related to the Emperor all fighting each other for more power in the imperial court. The Emperor will usually eventually choose an official wife as the Empress which gives her more roles and makes her sort of a head of the ladies of the court, he'll also have concubines as this increases chances for an heir to be born. Pregnancy lasts a long time and infant death rates were likely higher so most royals at that time outside of a few would have multiple wives and concubines to have more babies and more chances of an heir. If he doesn't have an heir then he loses a lot of legitimacy as it becomes an unstable throne with no future, that makes his opponents stronger. This is also why concubines have to be aware of poison as other families will make their daughters a concubine to become part of the Emperor's family with an heir and it can be cutthroat with them trying to destroy other babies so theirs survive.
We will touch on more things later about the bad of it if you're interested in that. Women at the time were usually political bargaining tools for the wealthy and for the not so a way to make money through marriage and selling them into servitude, there just wasn't that many options for them. She grew up in a brothel alongside many other young girls who were sold there to be trained and eventually they'll work as courtesans, this could also have become a reality for her and the other girls working as palace maids. Many families without money and status would end up sending girls there and being paid for it, they usually have a contract of 2-3 years to fulfil and the parents probably hope that some decently paid official or military man sees them and takes a liking to them to increase their own status. I guess at least in the palace she's well protected as men who are not the Emperor or a eunuch can't even enter that part of the palace so it's a much safer place to work than the city streets she grew up around.
Lady Gyokuyou now has a new soap opera to alleviate her boredom, the Maomao & Jinshi show. Jinshi playing wit Maomao's hair was to distract her while he snitched one of the brownies, that's why when Maomao noticed what he did she made that comment.
I think the way Cara feels about the various themes is actually what is intended. The contrast between the nonchalant attitude towards these themes and the actual gravity of them. Thank you and love your content.
I have watched it a long time ago and I don't know if it's going to state in anime, but Maomao is not a child. Also, please note while watching that Apothecary Diaries is based on 15th century China (Tang Dynasty), at that time it is normal to get married at 15 years old.
Lmao I’m with Cara on this one, I did NOT like Jinshi at first but he grew on me later on 😂
I am joining the 'Please, react to Fruits Basket' crowd :D
This crowd is growing!😂
@@CaraPrezReacts You need to watch it before you start another shoujo anime after Horimiya ❤
I'm also here to request Fruit Basket anime 😁❤
@@CaraPrezReacts yes pleaseeeeee
oh they will soooo love fruits basket. I feel like prez will like it more idk why lol. actual good shojou with good plot and emotional story and AMAZING character development.
Yes! It's still my favourite
8:36 Jinshi’s eng VA is Gojo, so you’re not wrong 😂
I don't really understand how people see Maomao as a child, like she's obviously, even without us being told her age yet, a late teenager. she acts mature, and her personality shows wisdom and experience. idk why people always decide short = child lol. i have a friend in america, she's my age, but she's 4'9". however, she doesn't appear child-like of course, because she's an adult woman with a mature personality. i'm an adult woman as well, and despite being on the taller side of 5'10", one could look at both of us if we were to stand next to one-another and assert "that's two adults, or atleast their late teens.", is how i see it.
and like, it's not like Mao Mao getting so excited over her hyperfixation; various poisons, is a 'child-like' trait; the neurodivergence-coding in her character is pretty clear considering her often cold exterior and how much she lights up around what she likes, it's not like enjoying things is a childish trait, afterall (unless one is like, idk, a middle-aged overworked japanese businessman, haha.). as an autistic woman myself, I too get as excited as Mao Mao; not about poison, but rather my own special interests.
so, that's atleast my take on it.
She's like tutsomaki from one punch. Mature loli. Don't deny it.

I've seen some people that kept on hyper-focusing on the wrong things & keep saying this show is dark, sad, etc. Which is WRONG!!
I actually find it interesting that Jinshi's most tangible assest is his beauty, which is typically a woman's weapon, especially in this setting. He's uses that Pretty Privilege™ to his advantage. I quite admire it, LOL.
HE'S FOR THE STREETS 🗣🗣🗣
Oh it gets better from here, and yes as Prez explained it wants to fully get into the timeline and story of the anime and lose some senses from the current/real world. Dont worry Cara as long as you enjoy the series thats what matters.
I don't think MaoMao is a slave. It seems more like indentured servitude. Mao Mao does get paid, and there is a contractual time-limit for her when she can quit.
But the money goes to the kidnappers... That's why the lady in waiting of gyukyu concubine Internationally broke a jar, cut of her payment and also charged her... Then gave a token to use that can be used instead of money inside the palace
@@xiaotaotao7198 Yeah, she does get a separate salary now, but her situation was only temporary. The system is not supposed to lead to slavery. MaoMao probably had some protections as a citizen and a contracted worker, though I suppose that doesn't mean much to the nobility that she gets exposed to.
Please watch "Fruit Basket" Shoujo anime ❤❤ it's a Masterpiece 💯
Consorts/concubines are aspiring for honor and power by being sexually cherished by the Emperor and if they have a child with the Emperor, they and their family will have a huge status boost.
Women are technically powerless and as this series progresses we will see that they are strong, determined, ambitious, … and whether their actions are good or bad this power struggle for them in a male dominated status obsessed society will be part of the series.
This reality is not unique to Asia but pretty much universal until very very recently (Enlightenment starting in 1700) starting in the West.
Women have struggled and some cases succeeded Catherine the Great, Borgias, Queen Elizabeth and Victoria, … but by far exceptions.
I really love Gyokuyou’s amusement and delight with Maomao’s reaction to Jinshi and his obsession with her.
Nice reaction, helorious. As per anime trope, they overdid the effects of chocolate as an aphrodisiac but to be fair, it does have properties like that.
Incidentally cacao beans, the main ingredient of chocolate, is a New World plant, so can't have reached China before Christopher Coumbus in the 1500s. I gave it a century to reach China which would have placed this setting in what is considered Ming Dynasty. But later, I was told by manga readers that this is an alternate Chinse history based on a much older dynasty, called the Tang Dynasty (about 600s-900s AD), one of the more famous dynasties of China, which I think had the biggest territory, extending far into Central Asia almost to Europe though not quite. (bordering modern day Iran I think) This anime apprently assumes that Tang never ended, so I can't assume this is anime is based on real life dynasty. However, the cultural depiction is spot on. If this wasn't an anime, I would have thought its like those real life Chinese series I used to watch on Hong Kong or China channels on ancient China.
I think Maomao feels that Jinshi is vain, uses his beauty as power, and is a bit manipulative.
I don’t think she sees him as evil or bad but does not find him attractive personality or her type.
unsurprisingly the times she responds more positively towards him are the times in which his masks slips a bit and he shows more of his true self
Love the hashtags on this video 😉
One of the saddest things I read about this show is that women where not allowed to learn at that time in China; so the only way for Mao Mao to learn about poison and drugs was by testing on herself 🚶♀️💔
It wasnt really like that, more like poor people had no access to knowledge. All the small guilds/businesses had a sectarian approach of masters picking disciples to train, often relatives or children of friends.
As for the gvmt officials they were like small nobility, their children had the right to learn anything.
Of course the female roles in society was very limited, mostly to mothers/home makers. And for the nobles it was to establish alliances, quite like medieval europe.
@@MrEvans1 thank you for the information
So seductive he gave her chills!
Actually concubines are in this epoch rly powerful, there are when they have luck the queen of the emperor and the right hand of him with a lot of might and a lot of opportunity
the story very deliberately tries to avoid to tie itself to any real world time and place, but it is very much based on the Forbidden Palace in Beijing, which was the seat of the Chinese Emperor and Government during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1420-1924). but again, this is a realistic but completely fictional world. it's not a real place, they are not real people, and it's not a real time period. it's just *heavily* based on historical China. it's like how Westeros is based on medival Europe.
17:54 "maomao has childish side to her, which is get excited by the drugs"
Bro what? Lmao
classic child activity
by far the biggest drug out there nowadays is sugar, so it is not incorrect. The amount of sugar in daily ingredients is gone far beyond capable. Just try to avoid it for a week and everything where sugar is added.
Disclaimer: "This is totally fiction. Please don't sue us, China."
Its kinda roughly based around 15th century China
Gojo and Jinshi are somewhat alike now that you bring it up, like, Gojo's always flirting with people to fuck with them, it's for a different intention than Jinshi though, who does it to manipulate others. Gojo just wants to piss people off, like when he implied that Jogo was nervous because it was his 'first time' while interlocking their fingers with one another. they give off similar vibes for different reasons.
I feel like there's not many reactions to Kotaro Lives Alone, I would personally love to see you guys watch that one if you are looking for recommendations.
The hashtags you have are for Frieren, btw.
It likely takes place in 15th century china
I would think later due to presence of cocoa, tobaco and potatoes during the show
@@marctorres7182 maybe 16th then
The disclaimer text points out that it's fictional; they clearly take a lot of inspiration from historic events, but not have to worry about historical accuracy, or reference historical figures.
It's weird even if it's setting is a historical time period there's alot of inaccuracies and other things that cause it to break away from being a historical fiction
@@NotthefirstDovahkiin if I recall correctly, they never actually mention the name of the country (Maomao generally says things like "our nation")
Maomao is older than she looks, she's just on the petite side
The author herself doesn't like Jinshi.
I think Maomao feels that Jinshi is vain, uses his beauty as power, and is a bit manipulative.
I don’t think she sees him as evil or bad but does find him attractive personality or her type.
He IS creepy but that is literally his job.
Great reaction! Keep them coming. I like that Cara reacts to Jinshi like Maomao does. A lot of other reaction channels (mostly female but some male) seem to go gaga for Jinshi. You'll come to like him more as the show goes on but right now, I don't think he's terribly likable.

I'm a guy and I felt very much like Cara did at this point in the story. Sure, it's another culture, it's another time period. Jinshi is undoubtedly used to using his charm to get his way and manipulate people in the court. All of that makes sense, and there's absolutely a sense of comedy about it. But it's still completely valid to find the behavior creepy and iffy, because I did as well. And considering that Maomao feels the same way, I think it's fair to say that it's at least a little bit intentional for it to be creepy.
Can't wait for more episodes, I hope Cara doesn't mind powering through the few creepy bits because oh lord is the show worth it.
You should try watching "Honzuki no Gekokujou/Ascendance of a Bookworm" anime too. Very similar feeling, slow but interesting plot and it is just as good.
P.S she's not a child (well she's 17 years old). Jinshi is 18 years old. In light novel and alternative manga she looks more mature, but most popular manga has younger looking maomao design and anime went with it.
