Well I've got to say that I remember seeing Stan Getz practicing with his band in his home in NY in this fantastic acoustically perfect round room in his house,. It was a front room on the left as you came in the front door. Being friends with his daughter but only 16, I didn't realize I was in the presence of greatness. I saw him frequently. We were not allowed in this room when he wasn't there, but of course we went in anyway and tested the sound in this beautiful room with whoops and clapping. The echo was amazing. The floor was beautiful wood and the room was light and airy with stained glass circling the top and then was elevated more in a dome.. The light it made was beautiful. Though we weren't into jazz as kids, I will never forget the way they sounded playing all together with Stan. I remember one night in particular standing in the hall and we were peeking in at them all playing and i can still hear this amazing sound. Just amazing This room seemed to be lifted off the ground when they were in there.. So full, so rich, I saw him at his very best. God bless him.
So many beautiful notes played- so many lovely dreams given by one so talented . One who gave to so many who adored him, as I did and so fortunate to have shared the moments - too brief but , oh, so warm. I miss you buddy . All I can do is thank you Stan; my friend. You are the only one I know that could make Palm Springs cool
I've listened to so many tenor players and I always come back to Getz. He's been a pattern player, a fast player, but he's always been creative. Getz makes me feel good: Trane is an exercise player, Getz is an artist.
James Blythe John Coltrane might be the single most influential tenor saxophonist of all time. I don't know what you mean by "exercise player", but he's THE artist when it comes to the horn. I'm not taking a crap on Stan Getz, the man was a genius. Also, this video is proof of how he eventually started seriously appealing to the easy listening crowd, just as Sonny Rollins eventually did.
+Jackson Burris............ "Easy listening" translates as taking a break from all that 'traned' down 'dizzy' cacophony. Gimme a break - literally! That's a sophisticated European audience BTW........the sound on this tape is pretty unprofessional I might add. We deserve more. I have the original soundtrack of this album from a public TV production - far better.
You have to admit Stan is the cool , late nite jazz SAX of choice. If I want o wind down with a malt & cjgar......Stan is the Man ......what a catalogue of music..... and maybe 2-4 albums I don't favour But so many I love .... West Coast Jazz .Cool
+Ten Player Great maybe we met one winter night in a smokey bar in Amsterdam Central pre 1969 when Chet & Stan played together ... THAT was coooooooooool as ! RIP Chet
Eddie del Barrio! ...Dad of my dance buddy Raymond! -- love to hear him play... This is such a smooth, solid band Getz has here...Terri Lynn Carrington, subtle & smart drumming...This is a wonderful listen!
getz can't res in peace. not when we are here to shake his box and say...play! and could he ever. what a soul and an echo that will reverbrate on forever. try to find it in the now. can't be done. he didn't have to try. it was like breathing for him. it just came out. only once and again mid 20th century.
Stan and Kenny getting together it's written by Kenny in his liner notes on double decker "People Time" recording. Worth noting what Charlie Haden wrote: Playing music with Stan Getz was like being instantly transformed to a level of depth and beauty.
In case you're wondering about an impressive 3,5 hours gig -- this video shows twice the same concert in a row, the original duration is about 103 minutes ;-)...
Stan the man, so many tenor players in my jazz history but Stan is awesome, Stan Getz at the Shrine with Brookmeyer and West Coast Jazz with Conte Candoli and The Dolphin with Lou Levy on piano. I have all his important albums and I saw him in Tokyo, Japan in 1960s, then again in Toronto in the 80s.. never failed to impress me, his ballads during the cool school period and then his work with Diz Gillespie also Oscar Peterson, never would I sell those albums. When I was 16 his Autumn Leaves was constantly on my record player also Hymn to the Orient with talented guitarist Jimmy Raney. Stan is forever in my jazz music!!!
Then maybe you will appreciate (as I did) the biography 'Stan Getz - A Life in Jazz' by Donald L. Maggin. Published by William Morrow, NY 1996, ISBN 0-688-12315-5.
Yes thank you, I have the Maggin book... if you like tenor sax I can recommend Jazz Man (Ronnie Scott) by John Fordham also by his daughter Rebecca Scott : A Fine Kind of Madness, Ronnie Scott remembered... I just ordered the new book on drummer Stan Levey he played with Stan. And of course Shelley Manne at the Black Hawk the 5 volume CD with Richie Kamuca and trumpeter Joe Gordon. The Jazz Couriers with 2 tenors Ronnie and Tubby Hayes was an amazing English band to sound like an American Art Blakey group. I miss Stan Getz but I have his MUSIC on my Mirage M3 speakers wirelessly from computer to stereo via Apple Airport Express, Stan would be pleased with the new technology
Stan Getz, the perfect symbiosis with his Selmer MK VI. Many tried but no sax player ever nailded his tone. Not to say there are no better technically skillded players. Personally I prefer tone and emotion above technique. Stan Getz is my go to easy listening saxophone player.
With only one lung left after cancer ! Shows therefore extent of his best blowing technique on saxophone . He started on the bassoon with both lip double embouchure
Beautiful live concert of my all time favorite tenorsax player. Can anyone give me more details of this concert? Titles of the songs, members of the band, where was it recorded? I cannot find it anywhere...........

I heard and met Stan in Chicago in 1991 when he played at a hotel on Chicago's Near North Side and I purchased his then new album "Green Dolphin Street".from him and we chatted about .our both being from California , he from San Francisco and I further down the Peninsula. That was about the third or fourth , and sadly the last time I saw him in person. How sad he did not live longer.
+OLEG IGNASHKIN That's because the video was starting over. Didn't you notice the credits? You saw and heard the full concert - uploading error caused the rest......

The sound on this tape is pretty unprofessional. We deserve more. I have the original soundtrack of this video from a public TV production - far better. Anybody here interested in 'splicing it in?' In fact - this video is ridiculous!! I'll upload my version soon - all sound intact.
The best tenor sax sound of all time

Thank you for sharing those amazing private memories here!🙏
God bless you for this experience.

Stan The Man just about the coolest sound ever! Thanks for the memories.
Most beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Much respect for Stan Getz.
The Best Sax I can't Stop Listening This Wonderful Live ...!!! I LOVE it Thank You Mister Getz
I've listened to so many tenor players and I always come back to Getz. He's been a pattern player, a fast player, but he's always been creative. Getz makes me feel good: Trane is an exercise player, Getz is an artist.
James Blythe Apples and oranges; both great. Note what Trane said about Getz!
James Blythe i have to agree with you!
James Blythe John Coltrane might be the single most influential tenor saxophonist of all time. I don't know what you mean by "exercise player", but he's THE artist when it comes to the horn. This guy is absolutely stunning indeed with an amazing band.
I grew up with my late father listening and playing (trying) along with Stan Getz. It's like you're in a different world.
Kenny baron genius piano player!
THE BEST. I AM SO INTO THE ...FOCUS ALBUM... . BRILLIANTLY EXECUTED..... HE IS A MASTER.
偉大的 一代 SAX 大師.

The sound turns off about 1:43
Incredible Stan Getz. In my opinion, the most sensitive tenor sax.
that's because the set is over. the video repeats the video, why ????
Stan and Kenny getting together it's written by Kenny in his liner notes on double decker "People Time" recording. Worth noting what Charlie Haden wrote: Playing music with Stan Getz was like being instantly transformed to a level of depth and beauty.

I agree Jeffrey. Jazz is so wonderful, you can always fine something that is enjoyable with all players.
R.I.P., Stan.
Stan, always recognizable sound, but oh so wonderful! in best company here and Jazzhus

Love the shirt!
I never heard Slow Boat to China sound so good!
GREAT - but the last recording 1991 at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Stan Getz, the perfect symbiosis with his Selmer MK VI. Many tried but no sax player ever nailded his tone. Not to say there are no better technically skillded players. Personally I prefer tone and emotion above technique. Stan Getz is my go to easy listening saxophone player.
+Martijn t' Sas Isn't technique the ability to bring the most beautiful sound and ideas into our world? Stan had it going on.
Frank Feldman Technique is absolutely part of it but it's the heart and soul of the induvidual artist that puts the icing on the cake.
He had the technique as well.
total time:1.43.05 not 3.26.08 (!)
It's Getz, my friend.
39:00 seven steps to heaven!!
47:15 is the start of a great song called "El Cahon"
With only one lung left after cancer ! Shows therefore extent of his best blowing technique on saxophone . He started on the bassoon with both lip double embouchure

Master of ballads with Dexter Gordon! By far my preferred sax player. Shame he really doesn't look well in this recording :(
actually it was not his last concert - he had one more in Montmartre in CPH in 1991 which beats all in my opinion.
"People Time" (1991)--Stan Getz/Kenny Barron duo--Getz's last album. It's on YT. Scroll down the right-hand column.
snaaptaker That's a flat-out beautiful album.

no sound from 1:43:11 forward.to the end?
The sound drops out at 1:43:10. What happened??
Does anyone know what the name of the song at 28:35 is?
Hey guys! Why you didn't hear that the beautiful sound of Stan disappeared after 01.43???
+OLEG IGNASHKIN That's because the video was starting over. Didn't you notice the credits?
You saw and heard the full concert - uploading error caused the rest......
You are correct. Someone messed that up, still what is there - up to the point the sound stopped, is undeniably great.
sorry can someone tell me the tune
What's the title of the ballad at 19:56???

Where is this?
Munich, Germany. Philharmonic hall, 1990 (see credits)
My take-away from this video is.....I need to practice more.
The sound on this tape is pretty unprofessional. We deserve more. I have the original soundtrack of this video from a public TV production - far better. Anybody here interested in 'splicing it in?'
In fact - this video is ridiculous!! I'll upload my version soon - all sound intact.
