This performance is the same year he passed. He was an incredible player which made his demons that much more tragic. Saw him perform live at the Blue Note in NYC in the early 80’s. I am a devoted fan to this day. So glad we have so many players preserved here for generations.
Listening to this magic you can understand what music is. Chet is music made person, he is Jazz. This is the love of music, of a genius who gave pure poetry to each of us with open hands. I listen to Chet every day and every day I think that tomorrow I will listen to Chet again, her notes are now inside my soul, and my heart is full of happiness.
He must have been hurting, for him to look that bad. And to think that even with all his pain he could perform that well. Long live the King, in our souls and hearts. Never met you Chet, but I love you. Rest baby, rest!
Like fine wine...I found his performance to be his finest on so many levels. A culmination of his life coupled with pain and joy. To gain some insight into this incredible talent, see his documentary, Let's Get Lost. I found it bittersweet but intriguing. He has left an indelible contribution to this genre and we thank him.
Chet
1988 was a superb way of playing for Chet. He sounds so fresh yet with that always haunting sound. Everything I've listened to in 1988 (so far) has just blown me away. The musicians he plays with are so spontaneous and brilliant. These other 3 players all blend together in such a sublime and tight way. I love the pianist, brilliant. I am sooo envious of his talent and ability.
Almost blue is one of the extraordinary pieces of this recording, a swan song of a very sad man able to gift utmost poetry a few weeks before his abrupt death
Thinking that 1 month after that amazing show he die is so sad..Rest in Peace my superhero, now teach to angels how to sing and play trumpet. I'm Italian(Tuscan) and here, he's the king of jazz and music in general
i swear to you guys, 5 minutes in i had completely forgot that this was a live concert. ah, the joy of handmade authentic music by masters of their instruments. RIP chet and thanks for the music.
Oh Chet, what sounds, what musicianship - so natural and that ever-so important factor that was your music - you were never too loud, just right. Perfect, as always. Thank you Chet for your beautiful music.

Au sommet de son art ! Une merveille de légèreté aérienne, de notes qui s'envolent en spirales, et de mélancolie jamais appuyée et pesante. Une merveille !
the voice is an instrument and here is an example of a great trumpet player showing what goes on in the mind to deliver the sound that then comes out of the horn. Which is the greater. the eleventh symphony is ended with the orchestra but preceded by some of the greatest vices ever to deliver melody. only the composer could tell you but here i think the horn reins .

I'm not sure whether it was this gig or not, but he wasn't paid for a gig prior to his death. He also had an adverse comment from a critic who described him as a derelict 'store cowboy'. Drugs were beginning to take its toll was the sad story, but I think he will always be remembered for the emotional feeling that he would put into a song. His trumpet playing still held up here and was as good as ever.
Paid no heed to critics, no statues have been erected to a critic, they are by and large the fly that bites a horse; the horse is still a horse and the fly is still a fly. This particular insult is to display his own ignorance. Chet is and always will be a musician of extreme sensitivity capable of producing phrases that make your heart sing.
I totally agree--did you see the movie (Born to be Blue) about Chet that played last year--Ethan Hawke played Chet and did a bang up job portraying this troubled but oh so talented trumpeter.
"Critics" -- such as they are, can be so full of s**t! Chet was nothing even remotely similar to a "derelict store cowboy" -- that's just SO wrong, which shows the exact caliber of some critics!! Chet had some faults, sure, but he was a genius of a musician. Critics can't always critique correctly! And they're often prone to "picking apart" performance. Not nice to call names, whoever you are!
Pianist should be Nicola Stilo, who's mainly a flutist and played very frequently with Chet in that function, drummer is Vincent Séno from southern France, and the bass player looks like Walter Schmocker from Switzerland.
Not exactly correct, "Oded" but everyone has their own opinion. Chet is NOT dying here as far as his tone is concerned -- its still superb, but maybe you just don't understand the music, still you call it thrilling -- that part is true. You need to understand that sometimes musicians use other musicians in the country they're in. Sadly, you don't always get the best to do that gig with you, sometimes there are alternates, and some don't know what they're doing!! That is apparent in a part of this set.
Pianista de corte nervioson!! Nunca se supo poner a la altura de el gran maestro q tenia enfrente Y con la guitarra tambien un desastre jajaja,Chet te extrañamos mucho!!
I hadn't realized just how bad he really was. He was either very, very hi or very, very sick. Well, he was not, and he still played exceptional. Gone too soon!
Chet was SO correct about that -- what that guitarist did was impossibly inappropriate for that song, as well as that point in the song! As a musician, I would have HAD to stop there also, and I'm not sure I would have continued with that guy, but Chet was such a gentleman. BAD, BAD, MOMENT!!
Chet had stated that he didn’t really like playing with drums for some reason. He knew what he liked and he took his music seriously and he was getting on to the sound man. This is one of my favs of his - almost blue.
Mr Leger , he was speaking with the sound superivisor behing the stage , the bad Moment is this guitarist playes surely better than you , that `s why he ended up playing with Chet , not you

you are lucky you saw him, i feel i was born too late...
yes, I cry
As pianist for George Lee's Anansi I shared the bill with Chet at Ronnie Scott's around that time - what a privilege

Well said Ronette, Very well said. Yes, " Let's get lost" must be seen by every Chet Baker fan as well as every Jazz fan.
Ronette Blissett I totally agree Ronette, Chet is like Shakespeare, he covers all aspects of human life, pretty well most of mine.
