Very nice. I wanted to here this song as it appear in an episode one of my very favorite shows, "Are You Being Served?". Mr. Rumbold suggests it as a welcoming tune for the retiring Mr. Grainger.

+EMGColonel It is to my sorrow, that we have recently lost Mr. Nicholas Smith whom portrayed Mr Rumbold on Are You Being Served? He was, without question, a fine old English gentleman.

+Peter Paul I'm sorry to hear that - I met Mr Smith on a number of occasions and a nicer man you couldn't wish to meet - so unlike so many Actors & others these days

Lovely. Apparently this is the basis for Sullivan's setting of "Behold the Lord High Executioner!" in the Mikado. You can certainly hear it at "Like a fine old English gentleman."

G.K. Chesterton wrote that his grandfather would sing this at the dinner table.

It might've had a hand in inspiring Chesterton's famous article The Worship of the Wealthy

ll sing you a good old song, made by a pood old pate,
    Of a fine old English gentleman, who had an old estate;
And who kept up his old mansion at a bountiful old rate.
With a good old porter to relieve the old poor at the gate,
Like a fine old English gentleman, all of the oiden time.
His hall, so old, was hung around with pikes, and guns, and bows,
And swords, and good old bucklers, which had stood against old foes,
And 'twas here " his worship " sat in state, in doublet and trunk hose,
And quaffed his cup of good old sack to warm his good old nose,
Like a fine old English gentleman, all of the olden time.
When Winter old, brought frost and cold, he open'd house to all,
And though threescore and ten his years, he featly led the ball.
Nor was the houseless wanderer e'er driven from his hall,
For while he feasted all the great he ne'er forgot the small,
Like a fine old English gentleman, all of the olden time.
But time, though sweet, is strong in flight, and years roll'd swiftly by,
And Autumn's smiling leaf proclaim'd, the old man-he must die I
He laid him down tranquilly, gave up life's latest sigh.
And mournful friends stood round his couch, and tears bedimm'd each eye,
For a fine old English gentleman, all of the olden time.

charming amazing the music a young fogey like me can discover after getting hooked on Noel Cowards music. Anyone know if this is on CD or MP3 ? i'm not sure how to rig my euphonium up to a drawing pin even if i could find a copy of the 78 ?

thanks, i'm slightly confused there appears to be a genuinely patriotic version of this song and various ones mocking the sentiment inc one by Dickens.
