In doing so he incurred the wrath of the KMT, then Shicai overthrew him but continued Soviet aid. Otherwise, great video! You earned a sub.
Good video but missing a crucial historical point in 1945: Stalin demanded Mongolia's independence in exchange for aiding Chiang-Kai Shek against the Japanese. He claimed the demand was legitimate because of Mongolia's geographical position as a stronghold against future Japanese expansion. He didn't demand the same for the Three Districts of Sinkiang, despite geographically being in the same "Line of Defence" as Mongolia. Why? Still haven't been able to find a clear historical answer for this.
Japan didn't get to Xinjiang. They did attempt to attack Mongolia at Khalkhin-gol but were humbled so badly they decided to never go near Mongolia again.

A better question is why they gave up on Manchuria. Russian Empire wanted it and even controlled for a time and Stalin effectively fully conquered the region. Manchuria could have been very useful to USSR due to its trading location, securing Mongolia, bordering with Korea or simply stripping China out of land
Geopolitics changed a lot once ww2 ended. Countries no longer expanded by annexation but through having satellite states. No doubt the Russian empire was slowly chipping away at china, they had just cut off Mongolia and were weakening western china before ww1 killed the Russian empire. Soviet Union in between ww1 and ww2 was focused on getting back as many lost former territories as possible while after ww2 was focused on expanding its influence and securing satellite sates around its borders to use as a buffer. Warsaw pact in Europe as a buffer to the west, Afghanistan in Central Asia in the south, and Mongolia and china to the east. Another point is the Soviet Union needed allies to help it in the untied nations which formed after ww2
Manchuria had already been recognized as Chinese soil in Cairo Declaration in 1943 by USA and Great Britain, and then again in Potsdam Declaration in 1945 by the two forementioned. Had Stalin challenge this issue, he would have a really hard time. Instead he adhered to the liquidation of Manchuria as a powerful pro-Japanese state which would eventually threaten the Soviet Far East and Eastern Siberia.
It would be more nuanced if you could distinguish between the islamists and the secular nationalists (or pan-nationalists) among the turkic peoples of Xinjiang. These two currents are often intermingling but nevertheless distinct, arising from the clash between traditional authority and the reformist Jadid movement, but they are often unwarrantedly confused.
@@aidenbooksmith2351 I don't really know much, either. That's why I'm asking. Most of what I know is about their relationship with the Soviets. Both factions collaborated with the Soviets in the Ili Rebellion and the establishment of the Second East Turkistan Republic, but the Soviets later backed the left-wing nationalists to purge the right-wing islamists. Later on, after the PLA took over Xinjiang, many of the prominent nationalists died in a mysterious plane crash in the Soviet Union when they were en route to the constitutional congress of the PRC.
The Turks in East Turkestan would be more islamists then secular nationalist, the secularist reforms and laicism was not extended into East Turkestan but the connections with Turkish republic and east Turkestan was successful (although Turkish government did nothing for east Turkestan and now erdogan isn't even talking about east Turkestan) this means that east Turkestan would be fully islamists neither then secular nationalist. But who knows maybe in an alternative timeline this could change by adopting Kemalist reforms. I wish independence for my east turkestans friends
You're not wrong, however the word 'peacefully' is used here because the armed forces of the East Turkestan Republic did not put up any resistance to the PLA (even though their leadership considered it). And in the immediate aftermath of the annexation there was (as far as the scientific consensus goes) very little to no violence in the region. The repressions against the Uyghurs began a bit later.
Strictly speaking the legal discrimination against the Uyghurs began in 2014 with the 'People's war on terror', announced following the 2009 riots in Xinjiang. Obviously the Chinese government has taken action against Uyghur nationalists prior to 2014, but its difficult to pinpoint exactly when it started (the start date is definitely at some point preceding the Cultural Revolution). But regardless, the point here is that the (Second) East Turkestan Republic held a monopoly on Uyghur separatism and when its leadership announced it would voluntarily merge into Mao's China there was no immediate resistance from the Uyghurs. This is in part down to the fact that the Chinese Communists promised autonomy for the Uyghurs and in part because most of the Uyghur nationalist leaders had been purged by the Soviet Union, fled Xinjiang or suspiciously died in a plane crash.
@@YaboyShaheerby they pls elaborate on who you mean. is it the millions of nationalist Chinese living in Xinjiang before the Communist took over China, or the hui and uighurs who fought on the side of the Nationalist, or the radical islamist uighurs who wanted to kick out han, hui, kazakhs, Russians, mongols, Dzungars etc from Xinjiang and claim the whole province for themselves? who exactly from this group is being tortured since the communist party came to power

We're of course not ignoring that the Soviet Union was very closely cooperating with the CCP, but the point is that Sino-Soviet relations had not been perfect, even before the Sino-Soviet split happened. The topic at hand is one of the instances that make that very obvious. Stalin sought an imbalanced relationship with China, in which the Soviet Union would have the say. For this to work, the CCP needed to win the civil war, while also not be too powerful to be controllable. This may not been scientific consensus, but I'm confident that the Soviet leadership would have much preferred to keep Manchuria under its own control and not hand it over to China (as they did with Mongolia, Tuva and Lüshun). However under the specific circumstances , under which Manchuria fell under Soviet control, keeping Manchuria would have meant alienating Mao and the CCP and was thus not a viable option, because alienating the Chinese Communists would undermine any Soviet aspiration to control them. TL;DR: Yes, the Soviets were on Mao's side, but the two were playing a tug of war of their own (which people tend to forget).
@@HistorySpeedrun17 yes if soviets keep manchuria Mao would've lost since that's were they retreat after they were defeated by Kuomintang to gain strength time to time.

Another point was the local political structure at that time. Historically, the Mongolian local chieftains never really wanted to be separated from the Yellow River due to economic reasons. At the same time, they wanted to be part of a Yellow River entity on terms favorable to them. The declaration of independence back then meant very little since the Yellow River was in a mess. The chieftains could always argue later that they declared independence from a regime but not necessarily from the wider state. Meanwhile Stalin not only maintained some social distancing from the Chinese Reds but also from the Mongolian Reds. Back then, it was not so sure who would win the Yellow River. The Blues managed to de-militarize 90% of the Chinese Reds before the Japs ruined the whole effort. A republic, in the Soviet sense, was not necessarily an independent sovereign nation. If a Red Mongolia re-integrated into China could help turn all of China Red, Stalin might not really objected. Chiang Sr's elder son was married to a Russian-Soviet woman. They had 4 kids together. Stalin did not raise the Mongolian issue until Yalta in 1945. Partly because of this, some contemporary maps from 1912 to 1949 continued to depict Mongolia as part of ROC.
Sikiang was notably not a breakway state but one of many chinese warlords unlike Mongolia who did not claim to still be part of China. The best comparision to Sikiang is the Anhui clique that ruled Mongolia for a few years before Baron Von Ungern kicked them out, the Anhui clique where chinese military officers that controlled all of Mongolia despite the majority mongol population.

In short: Say you want to have the animation go from map A to map B. In your video editing software, you overlay map B over map A (you place B above A in the timeline) in a way that you can only see map B. Then, you put a mask over map B (when you put a mask over map B, the are that you select as the mask is the only part of B that is visible. That means if you set the mask to 0% size B becomes completely invisible and you should now be seeing A). Now you set one key frame to where you want the animation to start and one to where you want it to finish. On the key frame where the animation is supposed to finish, you set the mask size to 100%. That means that between your two key frames, the size of the mask goes from 0% to 100%, bit by bit revealing changes in the map.
The soviets never had the same degree of control and kinship with Sinkiang that they had with Mongolia because the Sinkiang warlord rulers where opportunists and not even slightly interested in communism, in the counterpart Mongolia was a socialist state ruled by a civilian communist party.

btw. the reason Mongolia wasn't annexed is because the Soviets wanted to keep the option open to give it back to China, but they never needed the bargaining chip. And later they missed the WW2 time window where you could simply annex stuff especially since the soviets called themselves antiimperialist and cultivated an image of anti colonialists.

Wow, this is some insane content.
You’re going to go far

Sikiang was notably not a breakway state but one of many chinese warlords unlike Mongolia who did not claim to still be part of China.
The best comparision to Sikiang is the Anhui clique that ruled Mongolia for a few years before Baron Von Ungern kicked them out, the Anhui clique where chinese military officers that controlled all of Mongolia despite the majority mongol population.
The most notable example is Mongolia, meanwhile Tuvan which was completely folded into Russia.
Amazing first video for any RUclips channel subscribed right away
Everybody forgets Tannu Tuva...
What’s even lesser known is the fact that Tannu Tuva actually annexed the ussr and not the other-way around.
Tannu what ?
This is extremely underrated!
really helpful for IB history thanks
Because they already have the entire China
Really good video! I think you should consider putting your sources in the description. It gives you more credibility, and helps people researching the topic
This was very excellent first video.

[Uyghurs are not indigenous to Xinjiang]
Uighurs are not the original inhabitants of the Western Regions (now Xinjiang). Han people came to Xinjiang earlier than Uighurs! Why can't it be changed to Xinjiang Province for Han people?
Therefore, the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region should be abolished immediately and the Han Xinjiang Province should be restored!
The policy of hostility towards the Han people should not continue, otherwise it will bring disaster to future generations! It will be a disgrace for thousands of years! Future generations will rub their backs!!!

The video is fantastic!
How do you create those animations?🤩
@HistorySpeedrun17 oh thanks!
You have a bright future of your channel, I know this.
Good luck!💪🏻
This video is way too simplified to be able to teach history effectively
What are you sinkiang about?
The German Coast Guard...
@E4439Qv5 We are sinkiang!
Interesting by the way, the next one you should do is why didn’t the Soviet union give up Manchukuo
Good first video!
They did the focus where they give China Sinkiang but take Tannu Tuva
Very good first video- I predict good things in the future. I do have a question tho. What AI voice thingy do you use?
Thank you! I use Elevnlabs.
@ paid or free?
High quality video. Good job. Would recommend you speak slightly faster.
Very informative
Beacuse of there was already a massive turk popularion on Soivet Union, i think being under soviet reign is better than chinas reign
Your first map of the Qing in 1911 was inaccurate for leaving out Hainan...
The soviets never had the same degree of control and kinship with Sinkiang that they had with Mongolia because the Sinkiang warlord rulers where opportunists and not even slightly interested in communism, in the counterpart Mongolia was a socialist state ruled by a civilian communist party.
underrated
Thank you
You forgot about Tannu Tuva. The Tuvan People's Republic did apply for annexation later, but not by the time the events you talked about occurred. It should've been shown as independent like Mongolia not incorporated into the USSR
hope u make more videos rly
Please make more Soviet videos
The Soviet Union is my personal area of interest, so I will definitely be making more 👍

You're right, thank you for pointing it out!
You talk about mongolia like it was part of the ussr.

The Han people governed Xinjiang earlier than the Turks. The Han murals and scrolls unearthed from the Astana ancient tombs in Xinjiang date from the Jin Dynasty (265 AD) to the 9th century AD. Most of the ancient tombs are buried with Han people. At this time in 265 AD, the Turks had not yet come to Xinjiang (or even appeared). This proves that the Han people operating Xinjiang appeared in Mobei outside Xinjiang much earlier than the 6th century. (present-day Outer Mongolia) and later invaded by the Turks
@@ILUVPAJEETS Hello CCP government
Isn't that USSR funded and help mao as well? That's why they win against the nationalists, And stop cooperating with Chang kai chek after Sun passed away also Lenin. So the predecessor of what sun yat sen received help from Soviet Russia was now between mao and the Kuomintang nationalist who's btw cooperating in Moscow before and now fighting for dominance in China after Sun passed and China was disunited during that time as well. I think you forgot to mention that aswell in additional Russia were ready to give up some Chinese territory incorporated to empire of Russia after the Soviets took over.
Good video
I only know it from hoi4
You own any other YT channel by chance?
No, why🙂?
@HistorySpeedrun17 Your voice is awfully similar to another RUclipsr I watch, who also does historical content.
btw. the reason Mongolia wasn't annexed is because the Soviets wanted to keep the option open to give it back to China, but they never needed the bargaining chip. And later they missed the WW2 time window where you could simply annex stuff especially since the soviets called themselves antiimperialist and cultivated an image of anti colonialists.
Mongolia literally asked to join the Soviet Union
Awsome!!
Free Tibet free East Turkestan
Imagine the two superpowers, both USSR and US, don't want Xinjiang be part of China. They tried everything from military riot to smearing of genocide. Heck, Xinjiang is still part of China and importantly the people are getting better and better lives.

Diversity of different ethnicity and culture are much celebrated in many countries of large enough size, US, Brazil, Russia and also India. But when it comes to China, all the sudden, diversity is viewed as a bad thing. How come? The belief is that diversity can only exist in white-majority countries, but not Chinese? Then that's some serious racism, against the exact notion that diversity and tolerance are universal human value.
I am from China. Although China always says that it has many ethnic groups and cultures, they always assimilate other ethnic groups. East Turkestan, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, and Manchukuo were all Chinese colonies.

Muscovy is now a Han-Chinese colony - while still foolishly dreaming of empire.
commie Han-China has ALREADY declared part of Moscow empire as its territory on new official maps China's state-owned Standard Map Service has presented a set of geographic maps for 2023, on which for the first time part of Moscow's territory is indicated as part of China. It is about the Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island on the Amur River.
Moscow wants to allow deforestation and transfer of land near Lake Baikal to private ownership (read- into commie China´s hands )
commie Han-China takes advantage of Moscow empire 's weakened position. Believe nothing else! Its not personal. Its strictly business....The future China - Muscovite wars will be around water resources and the reclaiming of outer Manchuria to settle a 19c. unequal treaty.
