also the opuim war didn't start because china want to ban opium import, it only want to ban british doing it, all the other trader can sell opium, which the british traders think it is unfair trade practice, and the britihs standing for it own person has lodge formal complaint and plead for fair trader the same condition as all other nations, but they were ignored and due to many more reasons, then the british start a military action against china, only when british soldiers are at the palace door, the chinese finalise agreed. The opuim trade issue are solved many years after, ,when the chinese could domestically grow their own opuim. Since the local market could get supplied from local grown opium they no longer need to buy from the british. and since the british traders couldn't sell opium, they don't sell many of opium and change their products to others good. Opium was nenver banned or illegal in the chinese empire, because back then a good money for the govement is from opium related business, chinse gov only banned their ofifical and solider from the consumption of opium, not the common people nor traveller, There is indeed a large tourism business in china when opium addict go to china to smoke opium as it was becoming illegal in many westner countries. the 8 countries alliance aim was not to colonise (except for the Portugal and russian), The rest of the nation sent their army in to protect their nationals frm the massacre against foreigner which is happening within china but the chinese gov decide not to act and protect these foreigners in many places as many places were actually fell out of the control of the imperial army. and unlike african, there were a long term and diplomatic relation between these countries and china. european would never colonise a land if the locals coul handle the management and they would happily keep trading. from the european pont of view, it is unfavourable to take lands, because of the cost associated with it, thus, if they could help their local gov, they would just choose a path that profit from it. This is a behaviour grown due to the impossibility to conquer each other in europe, thus they are happily give up their colonies when these colonies are no longer making profit for them, and obviously running colonies in china is very costly and given the constant discrimination againt foreigner in china, it is very much unfavourable to manage colonise in lrage scale in china.

Because the great powers needed benefits. China was under the Qing government at that time. The Qing government kept the Han people ignorant to maintain its rule, which made the Qing Dynasty backward. The colonists were afraid that the Qing Dynasty would be overthrown and China would modernize rapidly. At this time, maintaining the rule of the Qing Dynasty and grabbing benefits from the Qing government was the best choice. China was really big. Even if the great powers fought against the Qing Dynasty, you would know that the scale of the war was very small if you looked at the number of people in the war. But such an insignificant war could force the Qing government to give up benefits. At that time, a large number of ignorant Chinese in other regions did not even know what was happening. The Qing government was afraid of being overthrown, so when facing Western invaders they just offered benefits. The Qing government would not really use all its national strength to resist, because this corrupt government just wanted to continue to exist. But civil war was different, it would really cost the Qing government its life, so you know why the casualties in the civil war were so serious. In the late Qing Dynasty, after Taiping Rebellion, the Qing government's army was actually insignificant, and local officials had a large number of armies. If the great powers chose to overthrow the Qing government, new separatist regimes would immediately emerge in other parts of China after receiving the news, and the great powers would also fall into a real civil war in China. The ownership of interests between the great powers was also a big problem

this is just nonsense taught in modern chinese history books by both the PRC and the ROC due to KMT bias, the Qing modernized and was far stronger than the ROC ever was. It was the fall of the Qing and later Yuan Shikai, that made interior China vulnerable for the first time in modern history. There would have been no Nanking massacre if the Qing government was around, because Japan simply did not have the ability to conquer all of coastal China under the qing. The Qing might have resisted less than it should, but at least it fought. The ROC outright gave up Manchuria withought a fight.

    • @玉初

It is not that simple. In fact, since the death of Yuan Shikai, the so-called Republic of China has been in a state of division, with warlords fighting each other. If China could maintain unity and have a strong government, China would indeed modernize quickly, but unfortunately China quickly split. Outer Mongolia, Xinjiang, and Tibet also declared independence during this period. The Kuomintang later launched the Northern Expedition but it was not completely successful. The Northeast was ruled by another warlord, Zhang Xueliang. After the Japanese invasion, this warlord took the initiative to withdraw without any resistance. In a sense, he was also a historical sinner. Many warlords in the northwest and southwest regions only nominally submitted. There was also the Communist Party in the country. This was actually the most chaotic period in Chinese history. Japan was lucky to launch an aggressive war during the weakest period in China's entire history. It was not until after Japan invaded for a period of time that China gradually united to fight against Japan. In fact, if there were no external wars, China would eventually modernize quickly no matter who unified it, whether it was the Kuomintang or the Communist Party, or other Han warlords. Look at the development of Taiwan today and mainland China after the 1980s. But one regret is that the Communist Party ultimately won the victory. In its early days, China was isolated by the entire Western world and followed the Soviet Union on the wrong path. China took a detour, but fortunately the Communist Party realized its mistake.@@a1to8

well the europeans and later the americans just grabbed all the best chunks of china and left the poor less useful area to the chinese. the exception being Japan who were rsther more interested in taking over large chunks of china. the japanese actually invaded china in the 1890s and had already started to annex parts of Manchuria. before completely annexing it altogether in the 1930s.

When the Westerns were colonizing China, bringing democracy and freedom to China, a bunch of people deceived Chinese people, who were mostly uneducated and illiterate. The conclusion is those ambitioners have misled Chinese people, and made them believe all the problems were caused by foreigners and the previous government, instead of a lack of a clean social system without corruption, and a friendly attitude to other countries. And they started establishing their government, using nationalism and populism as their excuses for their dictatorship. The group is called China Communist Party, the ambitioner is called Mao, who had killed at least 15 million Chinese in three years starving, from 1960 to 1962, and he is the one who started culture revolution, a full-scale prosecution equally targeting everyone who spoke against Mao.

You study this history wrong. Ask around, how many times has china be conquered and fully colonized? During the Western colonial era in China and Korea, the emperor, empress are western puppets who latter abdicated the throne for civilian government, yet the monarchies in Europe remained fully intact. We must never forget the true horror of slavery history from the west so as not to allow a repeat again. This is one of the reasons I'm not against North Korea's Nuclear weapons. You may have poor military setup and strategies, but your nuclear arsenal stands tall as a deterrence and remembrance.

Pinned this so they won't misinterpret The other reason why China was not colonize is more than just they have more manpower with Wester superior of tech Millions of chinese had no match. 1) China is big having a new territory would mean a expensive to handle and rule directly. 2) Qing had suffer from disease and civil wars and it would be unstable for the colonial european. 3 ) China has a economy at its's own right so ruling directly means little to basically benefit the superpowers. 4) just like Japan on gun diplomacy China is wealthy of spices and silk and also Natural resources that could basically transported by Railroads. 6) Diplomacy was a thing but yet they lose the war so, opening up and accepting the ruling control over european powers is why China was not Fully colonized. 7) Border disputed over fellow european, just like pizza Europeans wants a big piece and not want to share, so having a buffer state is better. 8) What you said on Russia was a bit false because Russia don't really want to withdraw unless they have problem at home, Russia is unstable and they were on decline because they were late to industrialized, they also lose to Japan. So yeah if i missed something feel free to add.
