So you want to maintain the feeling of suspension when you're singing?
My teacher tries to get me to sigh notes but that makes my brain thinking of just being breathy. Thanks Kerri!

@@KerriHo my question is… I just tried to Google “why you shouldn’t sing from your diaphragm” and all I got were articles about how to sing from your diaphragm. So I’m wondering, if it’s a myth, then why is it so widespread? Does it actually work or do something good for your voice? If so many people have been using this method for years, and professionals even recommend it, then why should I believe one outlying video?
I’m not trying to discredit what you’re saying, just asking why you make this claim. No hard feelings :)

@@raegan06 Hi Raegan ! Great to see that you are very thoughtful about everything you watch! The myth is NOT that the diaphragm doesn't have a role to play. As I explained in the video, the diaphragm plays a very important role in the INHALE phase (this is voice science, I'm not making this up!). However, the terminology used "sing from the diaphragm" is incorrect, because physiologically, it's impossible to do, because when you sing - you're exhaling, and when you're exhaling the diaphragm is not doing anything active, it is simply moving back up into RESTING place. You can look up articles on the respiratory system to confirm what I'm saying here. Therefore, it's technically impossible to sing with your diaphragm! BUT you still need to work on releasing the optimal function of your diaphragm in the INHALE phase (when you're NOT singing), which is the exercise I outlined in the video. Singing from/with the diaphragm was a very widespread theory especially in the late 90/s and early 2000/s , but now voice science has proved what is really truly happening and I try to stay on top of it so that singers get the right info! Even if something is widespread, it's still important to do personal research and make sure it is correct! Hope that helps!

hello! i love this video, i am transitioning from singing from my throat to this style for the first time and this video helped me tremendously :D i have one question tho, since im not sure if this is supposed to happen, but ive gotten the hang of loosening my stomach and relaxing my abdominal wall, but when i sing during an exhale and dont have time to take another deep inhale (which i have to do for the low breath), i have to lenghten my breath by holding it, but that tightens my diaphragm a little and brings my singing voice closer to the throat, near the chest and larynx. Is that something that's supposed to happen or can I do something about it? And will we have to take such long low breaths for singing all the time now, since singers dont seem to do that? Thanks again for this video, and i apologise for the excess of questions, i will be binging all your other videos now haha

Hi Anurag! Thanks for the question - it is a great one. Basically if you're feeling like there's tightening around the tummy/diaphragm area, that is something we want to avoid. Your lower torso will of course naturally contract as you'r exhaling - that's ok, but tightening is not ideal. In this instance, where you don't feel you have enough time to inhale, you can do your best to keep it low but it doesn't need to be a super big breath. Try practicing with a hand on your lower belly, and simply dropping the belly, i.e. letting the belly go, for your breath. This should be relatively quick to do (so you don't need heaps of time to get the air you need) . Try that and let me know how you go!

everytime i try to breath deeply, there is this weird sound from my belly and it aches, it is as if i have hardwired myself into activating some other muscles in my abdominals that expands the tummy and makes it ache more than anything.

what's open/suspend? is it just holding the breath for 4 seconds before exhaling?

    • @KerriHo
      @KerriHo  2 года назад +3

It's essential just pausing on everything. So you don't breathe in , you don't breathe out. But you're not holding your breath in such a way that you are getting tense. It is just staying in that positioning of open ribs and throat for 4 seconds.... hope that makes sense!

Would appreciate a comment on this:
    - I've noticed that i breath in pretty much the same in both positions. However, the airflow is relaxed, even and natural when lying down, but standing up feels like i have to use some sort of force or active action to get the air out after just 1-2 seconds. I'm wondering if this is something I've learned (and should unlearn), or if gravity plays a role?
    Background:
I've have a degree in music and worked within the field, at times as a lead singer, for many years, but i could never seem to truly relate or internalize the proper use of breathing. Although i can sing quite clean, high pitch and both loud and soft, it always leaves me with a slight tingle/sore in the throat.
Thanks for the video, and hope to hear an answer/insight to my situation

    • @KerriHo

Hey there! Thanks for your thoughtful comment/question! It is definitely normal to feel that it is much easier to employ the most relaxed and effective breathing for singing when lying down (which is why I teach to practice it lying down). So what you are feeling is normal. The way to make the standing up version feel more normal is simply to keep practicing the combo of both, so do the exercise lying down then get up straight away and do it again standing up. In time it will also become more relaxed . The other thing you could consider trying is when standing up, simply let your belly go, i.e. make it "fat" , rather than thinking about the sideways expansion of the ribs. Many find this much easier and feel that it is less forced. Hope this helps and all the best!

Lol😂 I actually did this because I was taught to sing from my diaphragm when I was younger and recently started singing again and it caused my abdominal muscles to hurt so much the next day 😀 I learnt it the hard way😂

Oh you're not the only one! SOOOO many people including myself have been taught this all our lives! I'm so glad you know now that trying to "sing from your diaphragm"" just causes your ab muscles to hurt and tension in the throat! It's never too late to learn the truth!

That was very informative! You're an amazing teacher!! the note that i sang using this technique felt good and much more natural. I'd like to know how i can implement this into actual singing and fast singing such as riffs and runs, would the concept be the same or would i have to use the muscles differently?

I'm so happy to hear you found this helpful Nizar! The same technique pretty much applies across all singing! I would just say that the more chest voice or belt you use in your singing, the LESS air you need to breathe in!
