The old city of Jerusalem covers a space of 240 acres and is divided into 4 quarters. Till middle of the 19th century we had no quarters division but neighbourhoods called in Arabic Harat حارات
Which eventually developed into 4 quarters as of mid 19th century: Moslem, Christian, Jewish and Armenian.
The quarters reflect ethnic diversity, where division would have taken place due to political, religious reasons which despite a type of coexistence always left some strained relations between the various groups.
In a way groups would have clustered around their holy sites. Jews close to wailing wall, Moslems by Al Aqsa Mosque i.e the “Temple Mt” and Christians around the Holy Sepluchre
Armenian portion is unique as we can say that the location was not only determined by proximity to Holy Sepluchre but also to the Roman 10th legion
    encampment.
Roman legions were composed of soldiers from various parts of the empire and according to Josephus Flavius some soldiers were from Militene on borders with Cappadocia. YES “Armenians”.
Some of these Armenians soldiers converted to Christianity and that would be the nucleus of the Armenian quarter hence occupying the same area where the camps stood.
the quarter yields a lot for the visitor; the Jewel of the quarter is definitely St James Cathedral. Other hidden gems such Archangel church, Toros church, Seminary house, library, print house which was Jerusalem first, Musuem of Armenian art and culture.
