P.J Absolutely correct. Proper winter tires will throw a bit more snow and stay softer in the cold, but there’s little that you can do for traction when your body is floating on a lift of snow and you can’t get any weight on those tires. Still impressed by the performance though.

This is an apples to oranges. Completely different vehicles with completely different drivetrain types. Whichever vehicle has the best tires would win in this type of comparison. If you take them on real off-roading trails, the 4Runner would easily win.
A 2.5L, Dual X-Mode, snow-capable offroad tires, winchmounts, hitches, a rear diff-locker, and underside armor are now available for Crosstreks...among many other things. One sacrifices the 2.5L and X-Mode to have a 6spd manual though. The Crosstrek will never be a Wrangler Rubicon or 4Runner TRD Pro, but it can be pretty capable for moderate offroading and is tough to beat for all-weather commuting.
The more recovery equipment you bolt on the more likely you are to get stuck, the advantage of the Subaru here is its low weight (same goes for Suzuki Jimny). Bravo Subaru 👍🏻🇬🇧 it’s nice to know our Forester will cope in the snow if we get any !
Great job on the first video , way better than most people’s video . Saying it’s deep snow is a bit of clickbait but still a enjoyable video .Air down a bit it will help a ton
All vehicles are limited by ground clearance, no matter how big and expensive they are. Subaru does a great job for the price. At the end of the day I'm only interested in getting from A to B in the bush and start relaxing and fishing.
9 inches of snow with a vehicle that only has 8.9 inches of ground clearance. I say that is good especially for a vehicle that only has a 2.0 engine. Fun video can i share with a friend
Well fellas looks like ya had fun. Driving in deep snow requires you to keep your momentum up. Occasionally rocking the car back and forth using forward to reverse. A manual transmission is better for this. Sharp corners in deep snow won't work well. When all else fails try it in reverse. Get some better tires for the subaru.
My 4 runner trd offroad goes through 10" of snow without any problems. Maybe this winter I can see if it will do 12 or 14 " of snow. Was the 4 runner put in 4 wheel drive? What is shown is not representative of what my 4 runner will do.
Love the tropical music for the wintery scene! 😆 Thanks for uploading and sharing! I own a 2014 Subaru Crosstrek XV and I love how it handles in the snow (from MA)!
Like most comparisons on RUclips,to do an objective test, both vehicles need to have the same tires on them. Probably can't do that with a 4 runner vs. a crosstrek.

Hi. I kind of curious. So when we drive with the Subaru in the snowy area, we don't need to put a snow chain? I just got my Subaru crosstrek and would lobe to try to drive it in the snowy area :D
chains are for more extreme environments, if you are doing mountain passes in the winter then yes you probably should have them (in case). You should have all seasons at the bare minimum to drive in snow though. Snow tires much better
@@kaimasterson8512 agree. I just learned about that in these couple days and get ready for the trip. Thank you for sharing and replying to me. Have a happy holidays 😍
Get good winter tires mounted on cheap steel wheels one inch smaller diameter and narrower. Ask your tire dealer for their recommendations for your car. Nokian Haakapalittas, Bridgestone Blizzaks are excellent, I went with Continental Viking Contact and they have been amazing.
Check your owner’s manual to be sure, but snow chains are not recommended on most Subarus. I drove through snow and icy roads last winter on the factory tires without an issue. Had to go through a road where snow chains or all-terrain tires were required. I ended up putting the chains on to avoid being fined and found out the hard way why my Crosstrek can’t have snow chains. When I drove, the chain would bang on the wheel well. I ended up taking them off cause the sound hurt me to hear. Got to the snow chain check point and they let me through. They looked at my wheels and said my Subaru didn’t need chains. I’m due for new tires soon. Even though I’m confident in the factory tires as I experienced no issues at all, I will probably get all-terrain tires for extra reassurance and better deep snow performance before heading up the mountains this winter.
@TwoToneXylophone You're so full of bullshit you're eyes are brown. I've been driving them for DECADES in the northern snow belt and have NEVER gotten stuck. I have awaken to find my car buried under the snow, I had to shovel my way ro the door, the snow drifted 4-5 ' behind me, and I have just pushed my way out. I was the only employee to get to work on time, and I cleared the driveway in the evening, just to please my neighbors not because I needed to. At least a half dozen of my neighbors have bought Subarus after witnessing the ease that I have had plowing through snow. It's been my experience (over 50 years) that the vehicles that I see most in the ditch are 4 X 4 pickup trucks who had just recently flew past me because I had been driving sensibly according to the conditions. And i suppose that wasn't fast enough for them. This has been MY expetience,my brotha.
got both, have tested on mud both all stock and using all season tires, when crosstrek struggle and CVT got over heat in 15 min, 4runner can easily handle in 2wd, but the trade off is additional 50% gas.
@@JeffSpehar-ov1cn Crosstrek: $30K, I paid $35K for an OffRoad 4Runner. Not even apples to oranges. I would somewhat understand your point if you compared crosstrek to RAV4 - Subaru's AWD system is superior to RAV's but 4Runner is a totally different beast/category, and Subaru doesn't stand a chance.
Given the price difference of these vehicles when purchased new, I feel you'll are missing the point. Yes the 4runner is better but offcourse it should be better be for the retail price. But for 25-27k the subi packs a lot of bang for the buck.
My Subaru is the best snow and ice vehicle I have and that includes, Toyotas and Jeeps. Only thing will stop it is when the snow gets more than about 18 inches deep.
I have 2020 Subaru Outback and 2019 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road. I like both vehicles but spinning the wheels and driving hard into soft deep snow is putting some serious stress on the Subaru's CVT transmission.
Subies are great untill you need ground clearance. The real test is if a new subie will last as long as a 3rd gen 4runner. Ive got a 3rd gen with more aggressive tires and a rear locker. I think i could put on a better show.
Well that ground clearance depends where you are, I have driven my 99 legacy GT with coilovers to almost the lowest setting and general altimax snow tires on the street with a foot of snow on the ground with no problem whatsoever, now in this place that the crostrek and the runner are😌 well thats a different story, I wound not even think if going there at all.
The Subaru is good in the snow no doubt about it. It’s just stock for stock with good snow tires, the 4x4 in the 4runner just spins the tires till it’s stuck. That’s where the traction control on the subi is superior. That changes with newer 4runners with their very well done trac control system. I’ve wheeled in 3 ft snow at least on rocks with my lifted 5th gen
From Canada and have driven in very deep snow. Doing this without snow tires in the vehicles gives a very poor impression of their capabilities. I’ve gotten thru similar depth of snow in my Honda civic with snow tires on it for crying out loud.
I just got rid of my 2014 crosstrek because the CVT exploded. In the cars defense I had 198k miles on it but no other issues. It was a solid car and did great in the snow. Hopefully my new Jeep is as reliable.
@@timmyadam3542 no they don't, they got #1 in quality this year from jdc power. And it is well noted how little you have to visit a dealer or anyone. FCA is at the top of their game and blowing away the rest of the domestic products in sale and reliability. You just dont want to see them do good.

@@brettatenciorn8522 the 06 outback sedan did have 8.7 inches of ground clearance exactly. And the legacy sold much better. Its becoming quite rare to even see one around. I have a suspicion that the crosstrek was introduced at the perfect time when crossovers became extreamly popular. I would take an outback sedan over a crosstrek anyday. Less exterior plastic, better auto option, and I acctually fit in it. I think the reason the outback sedan didnt sell is because people had some since of "well this is a daily driver so ill save 3 grand by getting a regular legacy (or impreza in 2020) and spending that and the gas savings on a 2 door wrangler for off roading." Now people want a car that dose all of it somewhat ok.

This is an apples to oranges. Completely different vehicles with completely different drivetrain types. Whichever vehicle has the best tires would win in this type of comparison. If you take them on real off-roading trails, the 4Runner would easily win.
i was expecting you too have 400k+ subs! crazy good video man!
Thank you! Maybe one day I’m filming more videos like this soon
@@AJ-qn6gd Crosstreks aren't light. They're over 3000lb curb.
@@RKmndo Probably 1000lbs lighter than the Toyota or similar size 4x4s
Very nice shots man 😁👍🏻
Great job on the first video , way better than most people’s video . Saying it’s deep snow is a bit of clickbait but still a enjoyable video .Air down a bit it will help a ton
Interesting... comparing the 2 vheicls I was considering... GREAT VIDEO!!!
All vehicles are limited by ground clearance, no matter how big and expensive they are. Subaru does a great job for the price. At the end of the day I'm only interested in getting from A to B in the bush and start relaxing and fishing.
Fellow Michigander here, I just bought a crosstrek of my own! Where I’m Michigan is this?
Fantastic video I was very entertained. Great editing too!
Driving in that type of snow, the deeper stuff, you should turn off the VDC to allow more wheel spin.
9 inches of snow with a vehicle that only has 8.9 inches of ground clearance. I say that is good especially for a vehicle that only has a 2.0 engine. Fun video can i share with a friend
8.7 inches of ground clearance
@@kylehaskell6651 like .2 inches matters. My wife doesnt care
For a first video you did very well!
I'm moving to Michigan and this is my dilemma....Subaru vs SUV
Great Video
Well fellas looks like ya had fun. Driving in deep snow requires you to keep your momentum up. Occasionally rocking the car back and forth using forward to reverse. A manual transmission is better for this. Sharp corners in deep snow won't work well. When all else fails try it in reverse. Get some better tires for the subaru.
I love my Subi Crosstrek!
That was a badass drift in the intro
Impressive view count for such a recently-made first video! Nicely done!
Legit video. Love the all seasons on both vehicles.
Nice to see Northern Michigan, my old stomping’ grounds! Love it up there!!!
New sub here I cant wait to get decent snow this year I bought a 2010 tundra 5.7l that has 12.5x35x20 inch crosswind tires on it I cant wait to get into some real snow I took it off reading a few times but looking forward to winter weather
Great first video. Looking forward to more.
Thank you
Looks like a party for my Hemi Grand Cherokee.
@@ttthr33
Get a set of winter tires and put them on cheap steel wheels and just swap them out twice a year, works for me.
There is a reason that Subarus are so popular in areas that get lots of snow and ice.
@TwoToneXylophone
You're so full of bullshit you're eyes are brown.
Excellent video man
got both, have tested on mud both all stock and using all season tires, when crosstrek struggle and CVT got over heat in 15 min, 4runner can easily handle in 2wd, but the trade off is additional 50% gas.
Fantastic video
Both have hwy summer tires but 4Runner is twice the weight. I'll take 4Runner any day of the week.
Four Runner better vehicle all around
@@Garlington-wz3ng No way, crosstrek any day.
@@JeffSpehar-ov1cn Please substantiate.
But for 25-27k the subi packs a lot of bang for the buck.
sweet vid! i wanna try this with my 05 outback!
Great video, thanks
although we dont have snow in austalia. im defently getting one now.
i'm curious if you turned off traction control on the subie? i've heard that helps it perform better in deeper snow
Pretty awesome hanging with 4 runner
Love the quality of the video nicely done
Everyone here keeps talking about tires. They are both running regular tires. The crosstrek just has factory all season tires...
Not a bad looking car after 11 years!
@@thehayman7352... Bingo.
Lol. It won't be. Fca sucks.
@@timmyadam3542 no they don't, they got #1 in quality this year from jdc power. And it is well noted how little you have to visit a dealer or anyone. FCA is at the top of their game and blowing away the rest of the domestic products in sale and reliability. You just dont want to see them do good.
Your jeep was a great choice, lets just hope its not a 4 door wrangler
Matt Cortelyou Cherokee trailhawk elite. So far so good. I’ve always been a Jeep fan and since having owned a crosstrek I’ll be a Subaru fan as well. Just can’t justify owning both lol
Oh nice, I like the Cherokee. 2 crossovers dosnt make much since but at 198k and a blown CVT it makes perfect since to get a Cherokee. Enjoy!
Nice! What camera was being used?
Please upload more of these videos!!!!!!
I think my Honda civic has more aggressive tires than either of these
😂🤡😒
This just confirms, no AT /MT (s) tires, poor performance in non-highway conditions. Doesn’t matter 4wd 4Runner or Subaru
What?
Well done video!
Love my Impreza. But I’m thinking about trading for a cross trek for the extra ground clearance
Toyota Subaru two of my favorite
The 4 runner is a full frame truck, sorta apples and oranges.
For the next time:
Subaru + Nokian winter tires = 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks 4 video!
These are two completely different classes of vehicle.
The Four Runner is built on a truck chassis and is therefore, a truck.
The Crosstrek is a compact crossover, how are these two even being compared?
Was traction control on or off?
Put good winter tires on that thing. It'll be all but unstoppable.
El video está muy bonito y muy bien hecho se ve precioso todo
When the Subaru got stuck and the Toyota made it out. The Subaru went on to fresh snow, the Toyota drove on the already driven on snow.
sick video bro just got my crosstreck and we just got a cabin im stoking for the snow first year with license
That looks fun!!!
Nothing like a 90's vehicle against a 2017 to prove which is better... useless!
lol if the runner had a better driver it would blow the subie out of the water... just sayin
great camera work. fun video. I think traction control really isn't a helper at all in the snow, just brute force
Why did the 06 outback sedan not sell but the crosstrek sells better than the impreza. Must be timing.
I think it's because the Impreza and the Legacy don't have 8.7 inchs of ground clearance
I've had snow coming over the hood of my 97 Subaru. Just kept going!
And the head gasket problem too?
@@Roosyer no head gasket issues at 240,000 miles. I have the EJ22, one of Subaru's most reliable engine's made
