Having been to China a few times, flying in and out of Shanghai as I was staying in Suzhou which is pretty close to Shanghai. Shanghai is pretty amazing, it's such a mix between traditional and ultra modern that makes western cities look like we're stuck in the 1800's here in the west. I was expecting China and especially Shanghai to be super crowded because of the population, but it really isn't unless you're in some very touristy spot and especially if there's some event or major holiday going on. During my last visit to China, the world expo was being held in Shanghai (2010) and that was honestly the only time I saw Shanghai being very crowded because there wasn't just locals and regular visitors, but also a lot of people who was there due to the expo. During my first visit in late 2006, I was up in the Oriental Pearl tower and had really nice lunch in the revolving restaurant up there, both good food and amazing views! Soup dumplings in Shanghai are the best! Been to the original restaurant for Shanghainese xiaolong bao in Yuyuan garden a couple of times, and even now over 14 years after my last visit, I'm still missing those dumplings!

@@kikik123kiki6 Well, I am here on a Student Visa, however there are plenty options to extend your Visa (Including multiple types ranging from work to tourist, etc.) any time. Keep in mind so, if you dont have an adequate contact, you cant do that while already in China, atleast as far as I know. Meaning, you have to get your fully planned out Visa either before you enter China, or alternativly you have to travell to Hongkong to extend it there. Hope that was helpfull, if theres anything else lemme know ... Additionally, have an amazin day :)
Chinese traffic is as quiet as it is partially because non electric scooters were banned from being sold in the country (at least the cities) many years ago, so unless you see a proper motorcycle, you're unlikely to see any two wheeled vehicle that isn't electric or manually pedalled. It was like this already at the time when I went to China a few times between late 2006 and summer of 2010, and going by this video, the traffic is even more silent now than when I went. More electric vehicles in general now compared to 14+ years ago. I always loved my time in China
You haven't been to China, please don't spread rumors. The fact is that gasoline motorcycles are purchased at will, but they belong to motor vehicles, but electric bicycles don't need to follow the motorcycle road rules and drive in the bicycle lane. Therefore, people prefer electric bicycles to gasoline motorcycles for short-distance trips, and the reasons for the popularity of electric vehicles in China are good quality, low price, intelligence and low travel expenses.
You might have misunderstood some facts that what has been forbidden in Shanghai is Fuel-assisted bicycle, not fuel motorcycle. You can still purchase a fuel motorcycle(eg. retro motorcycles are hot these days in this city), if you like, but you must spend more cost on the license and it's much less economical and less convenient, since motorcyles are not allowed to drive in inner circle and certain areas of the city. Therefore, people choose e-cycles naturally for practical reasons.
Visited Shanghai once on a work trip, and walked Nanjing Road out to the Bund, same as you two. It definitely makes you feel like you are in a foreign land. The subway was quite an experience, and as a tall American, I definitely caught a lot of side-eye.

Have to say I wonder how many pedestrians get knocked around by the scooters and motorcycles, looks like there is hardly any deviation between the two. @bkm2797 I live in HongKong, and I visit Mainland several days each month for over a year. Never once I see a knock between scooters and pedestrians. You go there, and you will be amazed at their skill. Speed below 40 km/hr is having the rights as pedestrians.

Memories! I studied in Shanghai at Fudan in 1987/88 (!) at the age of 21. At that time, pudong, the other side of the river, was all but completely empty. Not a single high-rise, just a few shacks on the riverbank. My last time in Shanghai was a business trip in spring 2007. What strikes me in this video is how few people are in the streets! I swear, there were about a hundred times more, then! At all times 9f the day, and even late at night. Strange. Where have they all gone?
Because Shanghai has built about 20 urban sub-centers, locals no longer need to go to Nanjing Road. Nanjing Road is completely given over to tourists. As a Shanghainese, the last time I went to Nanjing Road was about 7 or 8 years ago.
I was teaching in Beijing around that time and visited Shanghai the spring of 1987. My GF and I had a great time in simpler time China. Of course it has changed remarkably and is more wealthy and the Chinese people enjoy a much better standard of living. We will see if our hosts visit Suzhou, Hangzhou or some other scenic spot near Shanghai.

I have to happily tell you that we have quit from the high-rise building competition, so any country that wants to build high-rise buildings doesn't have to worry about competition from China. Our government (China) has banned the construction of any high-rise buildings over 500 meters. This is wise because the maintenance costs and fire safety of high-rise buildings are a big issue.

Another interesting video !! I also went though a weird transit experience at PVG.. I was only there for a transit to Japan from Germany but they asked me to enter China and exist China instead of staying in the transit area. I think the biggest problem on immigration in China is that what a staff at aipport says is different from what other staffs say that makes tourists so frustrated and we just end up having to follow what they say without reasonable explanation.. But, I truly love the people and foods in China so addressing this issue can make China more attractive for tourists :)

We went on a silk road tour with a British travel agency and visited many really small towns and rural spots in the far west of China and we were impressed by how vibrant the communities were and their range of amenities and infrastructural provisions. Conversely, we were stunned by the poverty in Florida, when we were last there on an academic conference, once outside the major cities. Food for thought indeed for us Brits brainwashed daily by disinformation from our mainstream media narratives.

Yes, the difference between small and big cities in China is mainly in terms of urban size, but there is not much difference in building quality. Because Shanghai has built about 20 urban sub-centers, locals no longer need to go to Nanjing Road. Nanjing Road is completely given over to tourists. As a Shanghainese, the last time I went to Nanjing Road was about 7 or 8 years ago.

I was teaching in Beijing around that time and visited Shanghai the spring of 1987. My GF and I had a great time in simpler time China. Of course it has changed remarkably and is more wealthy and the Chinese people enjoy a much better standard of living. We will see if our hosts visit Suzhou, Hangzhou or some other scenic spot near Shanghai.

I have to happily tell you that we have quit from the high-rise building competition, so any country that wants to build high-rise buildings doesn't have to worry about competition from China.
Our government (China) has banned the construction of any high-rise buildings over 500 meters.
This is wise because the maintenance costs and fire safety of high-rise buildings are a big issue.

Another interesting video !! I also went though a weird transit experience at PVG.. I was only there for a transit to Japan from Germany but they asked me to enter China and exist China instead of staying in the transit area. I think the biggest problem on immigration in China is that what a staff at aipport says is different from what other staffs say that makes tourists so frustrated and we just end up having to follow what they say without reasonable explanation.. But, I truly love the people and foods in China so addressing this issue can make China more attractive for tourists :)

We went on a silk road tour with a British travel agency and visited many really small towns and rural spots in the far west of China and we were impressed by how vibrant the communities were and their range of amenities and infrastructural provisions. Conversely, we were stunned by the poverty in Florida, when we were last there on an academic conference, once outside the major cities. Food for thought indeed for us Brits brainwashed daily by disinformation from our mainstream media narratives.

Why do you make it sound like Shanghai is a like a "Police State" just because you happened to see police presence on the street. Seriously with Shanghai population of over 25 million people, even larger than many European countries(not cities), the ratio of policemen to the population is almost negligible. And for your information, the police are there for your safety and certainly not to control the people activities like in a "police state"!

I'm well aware there are public protests in China all the time. And who said they weren't peaceful in China? The people are wonderful usually in China. However, having public protests is one thing, being on a government list or arrested for bashing the government etc. later on, is another thing. I have friends who I made while there who were taken in by the government for spouting anti-government sentiments or pro-democratic ideals. It's not some made up thing that anti-China people say, it actually happens. If you deny that, oh well - can't really help you there, I guess.

I grew up in a 38K town in Germany and a grade above me was a Chinese exchange student from Shanghei, he was maybe 16 at that time I would say and he spoke ZERO German when he came here, a year later when he was going back to China he spoke almost accent free in German and when he was asked how he liked it, he said "I like Germany way more than Shanghei, I wish I could stay here and not go back" than he was asked to describe Shanghei and why he likes Germany more and he said he is not much of a big-city person and realised that a smaller place in Germany was more his thing
