As someone who has never really listened to Verdi, the opera was a nice surprise.
im a rocker and puccini and verdi and pietro mascagni and rossini are at top of my listening list and then i listen to pink floyd, procol harem, the moody blues, and then everyone less. they are my pick when im on stranded island.

Isn't it wonderful to listen to great music while you read what everyone thinks? As I read I can tell some have devoted a lifetime to study of classical music and have wonderful insights to share! Thanks so much for sharing! Others perhaps are here to learn, or because they are drawn to the beauty and power of this miracle called classical music. IMHO, the world is a better place for it...then and now! My two bits...Verdi ranks 2nd in my opinion of world wide composers of classical opera. First would be Puccini, and 3rd Wagner, although on a given day Mozart might come before Wagner. I realize that some may have strong opinions otherwise, so I humbly offer this. I'm not an astute student of opera. My studies are far more focused in keyboard and orchestral works. So I can't converse on which mezzo soprano is best (albeit I love Callas and Battle - oh dear are they lyric or mezzo? lol), or discuss the librettos of many, if any, or which performance in which year is best...I guess opera is like good wine...there are better years? lol Nevertheless, the music lifts and fulfills and makes my life far better for having heard it! Thanks so much all who share!

Mike, classical music, whether we are talking about symphonies or opera, is always immensely pleasurable to listen to. I personally turn to classical music in particular, when I am either depressed, emotionally drained, or exhausted. It is the only medium that can give me a lift and bolster my spirit.

Eso es muy común, hay obras que todo el mundo conoce, pero pocos saben a qué autor pertenecen. Así me pasó también con obras de Chopin, Bach, Brahms, Grief.

I'm rather frustrated with this, it isn't the full music. It cuts out several times and skips it's place especially during very emotional parts. I watched a second time to make sure it wasn't my computer.... nope it's a recording error. It's like a movie that skips from the moment the main characters are bout to kiss, to one lover pulling a knife out of the body of the other. What just happened? I don't know cause it didn't play it through.

Verdi stond voor: Vittorio Emanuele Re d'Italia (Vittorio Emanuele Koning van Italie). Vittorio Emanuele was van het koninklijk huis van de Savoia, die uiteindelijk na 1861, na de eniging van Italie, over heel Italie heersden. :-)
