I've had mine for about a week and a half. It's one of those pedals you want to spend more time with because every little tweak leads somewhere fascinating and surprising. Not because it's "weird" but because it sounds so nice and takes you a little farther than where you thought you could go. I'm very partial to the way it can often be made to sound like there's someone playing along with you on mandolin (octave clockwise) or cello (counterclockwise). It IS, of course, a pedal one has to make space for in the music, and doesn't lend itself to speed. Not that it *can't* follow. Rather there is pleasure in letting the freeze do its thing, so one prefers to give it some breathing room. That said, it *can* be used in a band context, and is not confined to solo noodling and meditative stuff. My dad always told me to chew my food and not simply wolf it down. I think the same advice applies here to Onward as well. And yes, it absolutely begs for a reverb or delay after it.
This is precisely why i haven’t bought it. Seems to get weird quick and you need to run with other pedals as well to get the most out of it. My buddy got it says the glitch is not the greatest but freeze can do some cool stuff. Ill wait and see if people are still rocking it in a couple months and will probably buy it.
Chase Bliss pedals are pure sound design machines. Incredible architecture and the re-imagined Cooper FX Onward is a box of pure inspiration. I love what you created with it, Bill.
I can’t put my finger on why, but this was particularly inspiring for me today. I have a song Idea in my brain for months and this has given me some direction on where I want to go with it. Finding direction from seeming chaos is a pretty cool thing!
I feel like these pedals are exercises in option paralysis and the *idea* of them is far better than the actual pedal in use as I suspect many ppl tend to just twiddle with the pedal endlessly instead of making music I notice locally that after a CB or similar pedal launch if you wait 2 months you see several of them up on marketplace etc
guten tag mister sound wizard. feels like you have a real bandmate with this box. really enjoyed this session with no talking. great stuff. thanks for the good vibes. bis zur nächsten session
Cought a thought that the way you do things is perfectly matching my image of alchemis at work, or potion cooking... Or being in a search of the stone... Well, beatifull process and nice potion. Thank you for both!
Fantastic demo Bill! Best demo of Onward i’ve seen so far… shout out to #chasebliss for their latest masterpiece! Love mine, but so great to see what you did with it - definitely a pedal that needs to be “played”!
Turning the "texture" knob to the left is actually sample rate reduction and to the right is an analog overdrive/distortion. Very cool pedal, especially when clocking it to MIDI, it really sits cleanly in a mix. I personally have been enjoying using the dip switches on the back to bounce the texture or glitches for some cool effects.
This wasn’t what I expected, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I hope that you’ll find more Chase Bliss inspiration machines. I think you’d really enjoy the Habit. It’s a mono delay pedal, but I actually have two, so I’ve been experimenting with them in “stereo”.
I love this pedal tone stuff just as much as anyone else does. But how would you use this in a tune? I’ve yet to see one person demo these kind of petals to show me how I can actually use it on a gig or during a show other than just some ambient intro for something else. I’m not trying to spoil a party here kids, just looking for some pragmatic direction.
Bill, I know that you’re not going to believe this but I emailed Chase Bliss about your channel on May 22nd about getting you on a demo list. I’m not sure if they contacted you, but as a fan of you and them i wanted to at least try. True story. Glad that you’re into this pedal.
The old Boss DF-2 "feedback simulator" allowed one to effectively freeze and hold a note for as long as one held the treadle down. Of course although it was polyphonic with respect to the distortion aspect, it was a monophonic unit, when it came to synthesizing a copy of a note held long enough to turn into fake feedback. Still, one could hold that note as a drone, and play over it for as long as you wanted, letting it go once you lifted your foot up. The joy of Onward is that one can freeze whole chords.
@@patrickr6505 Oh light years ahead, clearly. I just mentioned the DF-2 to illustrate that the goal/practice of holding onto a drone note and playing over it is much older than any digital magic. Clearly, we've been dreaming about the possibilities for a while.
Bill, this is beautiful. What tuning is that, if you don't mind me asking? I'd like to try it as I learn more! I love the channel. Let us know if you decide to do Patreon or something similar!
Wonderful demo, Bill! Your tasty guitar playing makes it more than just a demo... I'd listen to this as a standalone track, tbh. I'm wondering about the stereo effect I'm hearing. Is your output a stereo trs cable going into the Strymon?
Is it pure ONWARD? From my experience it is great to add any reverb after the Chase Bliss pedal. I have several demos of some of the older CB pedals. please check it out on my channel.
Here's a question that I hope you can answer... is there an single stompbox pedal that allows you to split a signal by eq? I'm experimenting with bass tones right now, and essentially I want to set up like this {Instrument in} > [tuner] > [Compressor] > [eq split] > {2 separate signals out} Basically, I want to be able to retain a clean low end signal, and process the frequencies above that. Ideally, I'd be able to set the frequency at which this crossover happens on a knob or something. I have a bass amp simulator VST plugin that will allow me to overdrive and distort the top of the signal and keep the low end clean, and I can obviously do this manually in separate tracks within a DAW, but I'm wondering if there's a stompox unit that does this, or if it has to be done with a simpler splitter box and a pair of EQ pedals.
I should add, I'm new to both ambient music and bass, I'm historically a hard rock/metal guitar player with not a whole lot of experience when it comes to bass gear beyond the basics, so please don't attack me too hard if this is common knowledge in the bass or ambient music world, lol.
@@chordsoforion Oh wow thanks for the personal reply! I started following you a few months ago after I bought my first Baritone guitar and I thought your ambient stuff with it was super cool, I'm just starting to get into ambient guitar music now for the first time thanks to you! I've seen some reviews for this pedal and this does exactly what I would want it to do and then some. Really looks like an awesome pedal. But that $300 price tag is just really steep for someone who isn't making money with music. I think I might try to rig something together with just a Y-splitter and a pair of cheap EQ pedals and see how far that gets me. If nothing else, I'll just save up. Or maybe sell off some old gear or something. Thanks again!
I think it would perform pretty well, however, I would likely put it on a stand so I could easily operate the knobs. Also, I am starting to work with connecting an expression pedal. I think that would increase its live capabilities too.
For sure..I think Chase Bliss pedals are value for money because they have so many features..I mean just look at what the Onward offers..2 sides in parallel,Freeze, Modulation, Textures, Random Errors,Octaves,Half Speed, Reverse, Fading, routing of effects options, Ducking,Side Chain, and more including, Midi, Expression, Stereo..in this form factor, unbelievable...

Beautiful! Thank you for adding delay. Because. ❤😊
This is the best demo I’ve seen on this one! Definitely have to get this one! When I have money 🙃
Just an FYI, you can always use. Afterpay split it into 4 payments.

Awesome demo of another fascinating Chase Bliss pedal. Your sounds are very inspiring. 🙌🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Dang, Bill! You're having too much fun!
You both are perfect together!!! Such wild and beautiful musical experimentation.
Very nice
Beautiful playing and demonstration of what the pedal is capable of!
I bought the Cooper FX Outward when it first cane out and was blown away. This takes that original to another level. Onward and outward!

That was totally insane. Awesome!
Yeassssss. I haven’t have a chance to try mine yet, but this is exactly what I wanted to hear.
Thanks for this "demo." It was a joy hearing you make music with this thing.

Excellent demo. I was already sold on getting this eventually but now even moreso.

What a trip
Bill chasing bliss on his new onward march?
Great demo. Now to figure out how to afford one...
very trippy.
Where do you have the Onward placed in your signal chain?
Wonderful music! Makes my wallet sweat, once again :D
Don't forget Paypal pay in 4...? 😜 That's the only way I could do it.

A new Orion video Yay

I'm wondering about the stereo effect I'm hearing. Is your output a stereo trs cable going into the Strymon?
thanks very much!! And yes, the output is a stereo TRS cable. TRS seems to be a pattern now with smaller footprint pedals.

Not for me - but your playing Bill is excellent as ever.
Great tone. What amp/s are you using here?
No amps. Just a Strymon Iridium amp modeler.
great pedal. every tweak reveals something new and unexpected. lovely core sound as well, bill. which compressor?
Compressor? Why, the Strymon Compadre as usual!
