LOL, I'm author of this mod and I worked on it during period of 2014-2016. Actually, main reason why this mod is so unpolished and short is just because all people who first willing to participate on it's creation, just disappeared and left me and Andrey Kizil'bashev (guy from credits, GREATEST THANKS for his help) to complete it on our own. Or some guys just provided assets/maps of very low quality, so they can't be used in game and I must remade them on my own. After release of mod, I was so tired up and completely f*cked up after 2 years of hardworking, so I just haven't any power to work on it any further. Also I become ill after working about ~14h/7days per week for 2 years, so also needed to take time for reehab. Here is few FUN FACTS for you: 1) 95% of textures, including rocks, grass, walls, pictures, clothes - are made by me from real photos I took on photocamera across my city. 2) As well as models (boxes, ladders etc); many of them are made by me in SketchUP. 3) Mod has authorship music composed by musician El D'Vir (my thanks to him!) 4) About crosshairs, bad aiming etc. I'm originally planned to make shooting in game more realistic (harder aiming, slower firerate). So this can be a great mod, if originally all peoply did their job responsibly. This also my fauld as project leader, but we have what we have :) Kind regards, Roman!
I also find old games much more frightening as todays games. Even Half-Life had a scary atmosphere because of the early graphics. I remember being creeped out like hell when i first met the soldiers in HL. It was realistic, but in a different way. Your imagination gave that extra spice on games.
I loved the original mod back in the day, and even replayed it a few years ago, so I am super hyped to learn about this remake by watching this video. I will give it some more time to cook in the oven before jumping in.
"When I was a younger Sunny Jim..." Already there I grinned, it's a funny expression, it's as if you're inventing your own English dialect, though it might be a common expression where you're from. I've just never heard it before. Where is it from?
Neil Manke's old HL mods are pretty neat. "USS Darkstar" is also a damn good game (CliffsNotes summary: alien specimens get loose on a spaceship) ... and it 's only roughly 7.5 MB. Plus, it came out less than a year after Half-Life's release. They're pretty impressive for the efforts of one guy with early, limited resources.
Holy hell, I forgot all about They Hunger. I got it on a demo disc from an actual, physical PC Gamer magazine. The zombie moaning was indeed a high point. Way more effective than it had any right to be haha
There's a game coming out in a few days called Back in 1995, which tries to capture the look & feel of those old titles, down to the PS1 graphics and low resolution. Not sure how I feel about that choice, but I'll probably check it out considering how starved we are for decent survival horror titles.
+DrearierSpider1 I'm also interested, I saw the trailer but even for PS1 standards the game is way to blockey. I still hope it will have widescreen resolutions.
Very true, The first time I tried a emulator my first thought was "Damn the game looks better as I remember it" you really can see more details and those PS1 era graphics on a 1080p monitor are gorgeous.
They Hunger. A game with zombies when ZOMBIES weren't a thing. Good old times. Just played TheyHunger some weeks ago with friends in sven coop. It is really great even with multiple people.
I'm thankful that, since this is a source mod, I hopefully can change some of the weapon skins into something more appriopriate, alot of those weapon skins are some stripped from sights like GameBanana and/or poorly made.
Damn, I was looking forward to this too. I didn't even play the original They Hunger "at the time." I played it for the first time in like 2011 or 2012 and it still resonated with me. Hell, I just played it again last summer and it was just as good as I remembered it. Personally speaking I think it _is_ a masterpiece. The original, I mean. Not this. This has a lot of work if it wants to even have a chance of filling in the shoes left by BWG.
They Hunger Remod (google it) is a pretty good choice for those who want to replay original with noticeable visual update. Certainly far better choice than this remake in its current state.
I got really excited about this mod when I first heard about it. I'm not so excited by it now, though. This is clearly bare minimum effort in a lot of places. They Hunger was predominately the hard work of two really talented guys that I had the honor of talking to via email over a decade ago now, and it's a damn shame they never got to finish the sequel. This mod is not really the proper, worthy, send up that the original mod deserves.
I've already read some veritable horror stories about this remake attempt at ModDB and RunThinkShootLive. Shame, mod of They Hunger's caliber and influence deserves so much more.
Man, I agree so much with what you said about low poly models being more scary. There's something so much more unsettling about that, coupled with early 3D animations that's truly unsettling and has the potential to be a lot more bizarre.
I totally agree. Low poly monsters are eerie as shit. I was more terrified some of the monsters in Soul Reaver than most modern games. You making up for it is what drove that.
Personally I've found Afraid of Monsters much scarier than They Hunger. They Hunger starts off scary but towards the second and third episodes it mostly just becomes a reskinned Half-Life set in the Pacific Northwest. Wheras Afraid of Monsters felt legitimately much more surreal and terrifying. The same goes for Cry of Fear.
You should totally have a look at Crazy Serious Sam 3 BFE, Serious HD for Serious Sam HD TSE and insamnity 2 for Serious Sam 2, all our conversion mods which make their respective game a hell of alot more crazy than they already are :)
pepper Mill Absolutely, If I recall correctly they even went for pumping over-the-top metal first time you encountered those zombies, mutants, whatever in underground lab. Choice of music COMPLETELY ruined scare factor, especially after excellent and scary build up.
Yorwak Kaheen the mod is still gud, though. I seen the sequel, but i'm not sure what to think of it... (I remember the the first time you encounter the monsters. It was so tense...but just when the music kicked in, my jaw literally dropped. All that was going through my head was "....HOW? WHO THOUGHT THIS WAS A GOOD IDEA?")
They Hunger was a really great mod series back in the day. Good enough to warrant space on PC Gamer's pack in discs. Which was amazing for those of us with really slow dialup internet at the time. So this is quite the disappointment for me, sadly. I waited YEARS for Lost Souls, even wrote Neil Manke multiple times in regards to it.
I played through the original They Hunger with my friend maybe a months or so ago and we had a blast ... just the later levels really are weird and strange but that's not really a bad thing for us. We like strange and weird games more than games that take themselves to seriously. Dead Space is a really good example. Also have you played Subnautica? It is literally the only game in existence that scares me.
Funny how as games get more complex, they're shorter and not as much fun. Even Hans Zimmer can't compete with the old 8 bit jingles. My favourite games today are retro style games, or just going back to games from the 90s.
+Jayson Ducharme Retrospective videos take A LOT of time. Maybe 3 or 4 times normal reviews if not more and I didn't get much response from my RE video so I probably won't be doing them any more.

Hey Gggman, would you review the original ghost recons and rainbow sixes? I think you will love them. They are great! Just don't play anything after Island Thunder or Athena Sword. They all went to console shit.
Dude, Dead Space 1 was scary as fuck. Not nr. 2 or 3. but 1. Did you play it with headset with surround settings in a dark room? That game had perfect build up with nerve wrecking before a "the thing" like creature snuck up on you
Gggmanlives I would disagree again with you on Dead Space 1. Would call that proper horror. It's one of those games that got me most scared ever. Had to take breaks every 10 minutes to calm my nerves. DS 2 and 3 was more action horror I think.
