It's not just about themes though it's also so that the songs can bleed together. At Desert Daze '18 they played an 80-minute set that only had like 3 pauses for applause. That set had a perfect use of this concept because it opened with Mind Fuzz > Balrog and the last sequence of the set was River > Nonagon > Lord of Lightning > Cellophane > Altered Beast, all seamless transitions. They basically sliced Mind Fuzz and Lord of Lightning open and surgically implanted their entire discography inside. Idk this sort of things makes a lot of sense when you're high.
I feel like they're doing something similar to what Zappa did with his discography. He was also very prolific and utilized an idea that he called "conceptual continuity", in which he would re-interpret melodies into new songs, reference lyrics from other songs in new songs, etc..
17:07 they also share a lot of the same musical nuances (also the flute riff from 'trapdoor' from pmdb appears on the end of 'the balrog') and the three album covers are based on each other too. Also your comments on poly fitting in here too, crumbling castle was actually originally a part of motu i believe but they cut it. There's a behind the scenes vid somewhere showing that tune on the list with the others. Great vid by the way, appreciate your efforts. Keep at it mate!
Also, people like to consider the robot in Fishing for Fishies to be Han-tyumi. They also used the voice of Han-tyumi in Sketches and refer to it as a God. Also with Crumbling Castle, the thick, green water could easily be Han-tyumi's vomit. There's lots of references and overt connections but I agree that it's all loose on purpose. The Gizzverse itself is basically their albums but instead of planning the whole thing, they try to link things together as they go and make it feel connected while letting everything be abstract and malleable. I wouldn't consider the gizzverse a true narrative, it's basically just a name for their like 7 or 8 albums in their discography.
Some context is just that: some context of the chronology of the gizzverse, using the riff at the END of people vultures to tell you, that this portion of nonagon infinity will also connect to The Lord of Lightning vs the Balrog. Nonagon is an infinite loop but I’m convinced it can loop into other albums and people vultures into the lord of lightning is the most obvious.
i love king gizz and know close to nothing about music theory and you talked about all of this in SUCH an accessible and comprehensible way!!!! really really great job i love this video
Good video, though I want to clarify one thing. You stated that the band started to experiment with odd time signatures with "Quarters!" (14:15). Although it's one of the most audible examples, their first attempts at odd signatures trace back as early as in 2013. The title track from "Float Along..." is, in fact, in 5/8. So I think it's safe to assume that they started to experiment with rhythm shortly after garage psych phase.
Salut, This helped a lot, as I only bumped into The Gizz just last week. I met with the epic, "Rattlesnake".... my very first track.I wandered in lost and hungry, but almost immediately, I had become skeptical of the power this shiny beast held; a thus unheard monstrous band, composed of untold layers of complexity. What I spied and subsequently encountered was well beyond me, so I sought for a roadmap before furthering the immersion; and here we are.... This is the point where I shall offer my special Thanks! Cheers!
You'd think 6th february of 2021 wasn't that long ago and this video would be up to date, but guess what, they released 4 albums since then. (Songs like shanghai would be a great addition to the section about time signatures lol)
Teenage Gizzard isn't on Spotify. I believe it was only released on Bandcamp and the bootleg club. They Recently Added Eyes Like the Sky and Quarters to Spotify.
Teenage Gizzard was on Spotify for about a month and then the band took it down. They haven’t said why but I think it was because the songs were pretty bad quality, like it was ripped straight off RUclips or something. Also, King Gizz’s releases on Spotify are a bit different from country to country, licensing issues probably.
There are too many coincidences in the lyrics for the Gizzverse to not be involved somehow. We straight up see characters and events across different songs and videos.
im sure that was more or less a throw away comment made for fun, kind of mocking some people who read wayyy too into it. im pretty sure the band is coming up with these ideas and concepts simply as they're going, nothing planned far in advance
I too wixard the king lizard gixard gixard gixard igiazard
I paused a gizz album to be here
Yep, I just put off starting one to watch.
Literal same
Same
Which one?
I like how this video is only 2 years old and they’ve released 9 albums and 1 ep

I do want to see the 6 hour nonagon analysis

Any Zappa albums you can recommend? I always wanted to check him out.

You’ll love it. It’s a way of life. It sounds just like a Telefunkin U-47
@@brig.badger2896 Hot Rats definitely
This is wild only 2 years later with them having released 9 albums since this video came out.
I’ve listened to every album and am slowly buying them all on vinyl. Their music is great and very inspirational.
So cool to see a channel I subscribed to for unrelated stuff talking about my favorite band!
It's a little under two years since this video came out and it's already 7 albums out of date 😂
I will never not click on a video of someone gushing about Gizz

A video about conceptual continuity without using the words "Frank" or "Zappa." Nice!
I have just returned from a live King Gizz gig, how perfect, love this.
Why are u so underrated?? This video is hella entertaining:D

nah the gizzverse isn't a set universe its a bit more like a mythos with allusions to other things as well as it's self like Lovecraft
I remember when I first found out about king gizz, I spent the next year listening to all of their albums
Never... never have I seen someone as passionate about this band... thank you
When you say that nonagon infinity is 40 minutes? That's not true it never ends???
i love king gizz and know close to nothing about music theory and you talked about all of this in SUCH an accessible and comprehensible way!!!! really really great job i love this video
This video is so filled with talent bro wow
Yooo this is my favorite band great video
I still wish they put some 9/8 in nonagon
yeah they did plenty of it in murder of the universe tho
they did in "big fig wasp"
I'm so glad you've uploaded this, I have been thinking about this for weeks thank you for raising more awareness of it!!
absolutely great job man. love this so much!

I cannot tell you how much I love the Gizz
Erang is another artist who has created an entire universe throughout his discography. I highly recommend checking him out, it's great stuff.
I only subscribe to you after the whole Jackfilms shout out.... but content like this I’ll stay for!
Not pretentious at all. A really lovely video. I agree with your conclusion 100%.
what a banger, great video fam
Thanks cookiepuss 👍
Amazing video! Your speaking is very quick though, and I barely held on for dear life at a few points! But cheers for this
Great video, glad I found it! I'm just getting into gizz rn and this was a great help
really well edited vid!!

Great video Kane. Keep it up :)

Fantastic band. Hype for L.W.
Thank you for covering this awesome band! Good job!

I’m becoming addicted to this band. Goddamnit
Stu's pupils are always huge. He definitely sees the fourth colour.
Ya had me till you said their music was average lmao, fantastic video!
Awesome job!
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is my favorite jam band 🐒
love king gizz
Can anyone tell me which track is playing at the very start of this song?
Murder of the universe has such weird lyrics that are creepy. The first and last stories play with mental illness and the music sounds awesome too
What is the song playing at the intro
23:23 2014? Great vid btw!
People always say "when is the next album?" but they never ask "how is the next album?"
But.... what is a gamma knife...?
A certain type of surgery laser.
What song did they play at 0:15?
I believe it's the beginning of "this thing" from fishing for fishies just at a faster tempo than the studio recording
How did I miss this?!?!?!
What song is playing during Chapter 1?
It’s not a King Gizz song, it’s from the RUclips audio library. It’s called Buckeye Bonzai by Vans in Japan! Hope this helped.
vegemite,,, chese, uh, uuuuuhh,,,,

This fool tried to debunk the gizzverse. Nice try...
