I really appreciate content like this. RUclips didn't even exist when I was excommunicated at 19, and in spite of distancing myself from the church (both physically and via socialization) and my confidence that I was doing the right thing, it was still a jarring and lonely experience. Thank you for sharing these stories.

There is a new meaning to an "epic" Mormon Stories podcast with the Pinson podcast. This one is so unique with the excommunication being so recent and the candid honest interviews with all four family members. You have documented this family's journey so expertly. I must say that ex-Mormons in general are very strong and generous to endure and share their stories on your podcast. I listened to all seven parts. Thank you very much for this window into the LDS community.

    Dear Sam & Sara🤗
I tried with all intent to listen to the Disciplinary Council... however...could not help but hear pain and estrangement of what used to be your normality..I was raised LDS, served Mission, Married in SLC Temple in 1974..Father of 4 beautiful Children..married 18 years..served many Church callings including Bishopric(s)..until I finally came to terms of me being Gay. I left the Church..my Family told I was doomed to Outer Darkness and not worthy of my Children. 2020 I am blessed to know I survived the worst "shunning" ever experienced..My Ex-Wife and I remain in contact..Adult Children & Grandchildren close..and my now Husband since 1991 supportive, loving and understands my background..Guilt, Shame,Fear and Worthlessness in past..Listening to Tabernacle Choir no longer causes anxiety attack...and hearing the word LDS brings "nothing"...I feel you are both ( and Children) are courageous and thank YOU both for being transparent in this sad chapter with a happier ending

Why would they put themselves through that extra drama and trauma and insults. I dont understand it. Its different if you commit a crime and have to appear in a court of law. This,I would have just walked away. They see the church for what it is, so any sanction against them doesnt count. I would have just said, stuff it. Their ruling or court or whatever it is, cant be validated by us, because we see the church for what it is! Fake. Made up. Self Righteous and absolute rubbish! So their council has no meaning. So stuff you…walk away. Thats what I should have done. Instead of adding insult to injury. WHY put the family thru that!?

He didnt need to put his family through that insult and injury when he believe the church to be exactly what it was…A MADE UP RUBBISH INSTITUTION. He doesnt have to answer to you or anyone else. How arrogant of you to comment on what their journey has been. Shame on you. He did the right thing. Mormonism is absolute bullshit. It ruined lives. Its made up. Its rubbish. He didnt have to do anything to put his family through additional trauma and then some low life like you passes some stupid inane banal comment. What is wrong with you? Get a fucking grip!

I dont understand why they would put themselves through all this extra trauma and drama. They obviously knew what would happen. I would have just cut ties and not have to be put thru and further insults to the injury. Why? They are such amazing people. I would have just cut ties and left it at that and they could do what they wanted to do, but it would mean nothing because they realised that the church is fake! So any disciplinary action would serve no purpose. Besides rubbing salt into the wound.

I managed to find my own way out when I couldn't reconcile LDS church teachings with the example of Jesus Christ. ..as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. It was the dissonance of unconditional love for my gay daughter and the desire to support her vs. church policies of exclusion. I hung on for several years trying to be an example and a voice of reason "on the inside", but once I made the break I also found the sense of wholeness and happiness that the Pinson's expressed feeling when they made the separation. I found this particular series of interviews with the Pinson family so uplifting and edifying. Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I am so sorry for all you exmormons go through. I can not even comprehend how your friends and especially family can ostracize you for your beliefs
I quit my religion and did not lose any of my friends or family.
Couple years ago, I and my husband moved to Idaho Falls . We did not know much about Mormonism prior coming here. This has been a real learning experience. I have nothing against religions. What you believe is such a personal matter mostly depending on where you were born.
I met couple Mormon families who seemed so nice and friendly I was excited to make friends being new to this area. Kept on inviting them but no one was really interested in developing a closer relationship. It has also not been easy to find playmates for my children in the neighborhood. Not sure if this is because we drink coffee or occasionally wine or people are too busy with their church activities to be able to get together. Finally, we met couple of great people from outside of the LDS community so it is possible to find friends here just takes much longer than in other areas.
I really hope this family will not move out of here! We need so much this type of open minded and smart people with great morals! Remember you are the future! This religious fundamentalism is going to go away. There is just too much info around for it to continue for too long.
I am sure you exmormons have your support groups but if anybody feels lonely and abandoned by their family and friends and feels like hanging out with us here is my email: BrunhildaBrun20@gmail.com
We are a couple in our 40 ties and have 2 kids age 6 and 7 who are homeschooled and who would also love to make some new friends.

It was for my husband, who had been unfaithful to me with anonymous men, and I could not bear to hear all the details that would be revealed. I remember how my husband came home looking as if he had been beaten up. I think it is wonderful that your family was able to stay together and support each other through this. Thank you to the amazing Pinson family for sharing your story. You can be sure it will help others. I was surprised that Sara was not allowed to be in the council. When my then husband was called to a high council court 32 years ago, I was pretty much commanded to be there. Of course it was for adultery and the SP said that if I were there showing my support for him, he'd guarantee hubby would not be ex'd, but if I wasn't there, there was no guarantee. So it wasn't about whether he was repentant, it was all about whether I was the supportive, forgiving wife. It was so horrible having to sit in that room with 17 men and me, all eyes on me, and some questions being directed at me. However, that court was the first crack in the door for me recognizing that something was wrong with the church and that God/Jesus was NOT involved in that inquisition in any way. A few years later I was able to find my way out and find the truth. I thank God for that turn in my life. They can change the name of the circus formerly known as church court , but it doesn't make it any less ridiculous and cruel.

This is a must watch podcast! 🙌
Wow, much love going out to the Pinson family, Sam, Sarah, Olivia and Sam Jr! 🏡
This is one of my favorite podcast to date. Your love and devotion to family is remarkable!
The church's nowadays and especially organized religions want your money, body, soul and spirit, I mean your whole life!! And they offer nothing in return!
Just recently I left the Jehovah's Witnesses religion and I give much thanks to the the Mormons for telling their stories because I saw the parallels with both religions.
I've mentioned my story several times, but I'll do so again just for the new ones coming to this channel.
John your podcast is priceless and it is saving so many lives! I just want to thank you again for your commitment in helping us escape these high control religions, because lives are definitely at stake!
Thanks again and I will always support your cause!
*I began to wake up from the JW's by reading about Mormons and watching videos of episodes entitled.."I was a Mormon".
Then John Dehlin's excommunication was broadcast on television. I started following him and I noticed a ton of similarities between the JW's and the Mormons. This was an eye-opener for me!!
After that I got the courage to go to RUclips and look up.. "Why do people leave the Jehovah's Witnesses faith"...that's when I really started waking up!
I became obsessed listening to all ExJW stories on RUclips and the FEAR of the "so called" apostates that we are taught to detest started to become a different reality, they are just people telling their experiences when they were an active JW and why they left.
So all the stigma started to dwindle.
Then I branched out and started looking into Seventh Day Adventist, Scientology, Christadelphians, The Brethren, Christian Science.
I started noticing the parallels between all the religions, and it runs deep...no questioning, no doubting and everything comes from the top down.
The rank-and-file are just the followers with no personal self, no individuality.
After you wake up and start seeing these things it can take a toll on you, especially if this is the only thing you have known all your life!
    It is really tough!
The phobias and fears, can mess with a person's mind.
Now I see why a lot of people resort to suicide, it is scary but the good thing is there's help!!
The internet has played a big part in all of this!
Now I look at people as being just human beings trying to do their best, trying to deal with all the stresses and anxieties in this world.
I can now honestly say that life is better on the outside! 💯

This was fascinating and it's great to see how the family coped and changed for the better. It is such a difference from my own experience of losing my faith over in England and leaving the Anglican Church. There was no backlash, no lack of support, no family issues and I am still friends with all the people I was friends with back then. We could also question, went to secular schools and able to make our own minds up.
The only downside to all this is for the church as when all the facts are presented then numbers drop. Once again this was a great podcast and it's great to see the family continuing to take steps of happiness. I''ll take the steak dinner next time I am in the States!

I am with you Sam Pinson on shining the light!! I hate the idea that the church is ok with members not really knowing much about the history etc. "We'll admit that Joseph married already married women and children if they ask us but otherwise we won't bring it up." It is completely dishonest to withhold facts because you know members will want to leave the church or not join in the first place. It's the same idea as, "I can cheat on my wife as long as she never finds out." Does it hurt your wife if she never finds out? She would be just fine probably. Would she leave you if you told her? So is it ok to not tell her because it will cause her to question her faith in you? What do you think of a husband with that mindset?

Use “Religion” in inverted commas. Its all made up. Its been disproved by historians, and scholars of religion as being all rubbish and stolen from the bible. And then twisted and made up. And who has seen the Golden tablets. No one. So if they actually existed, why arent they on display for all to see! Because they are made up. Dead Sea scrolls have beep put on display. Why not the gold. Because its BS! The texts of the Mormon bible were placed in a plagiarism programme and its full of plagiarisms. Not one sentence is original. So its all rubbish.

Do you know what I heard - the people holding the council spoke more about their own feelings/faith/testimony Lots of "I" , "me" "mine" - it was like he was defending himself against an attack while he was attacking you. He spoke about himself longer than Sam was able to.Using the word love to confuse things. Very odd , very biased but not "hearing" anything ! Also recording is like having a witness that they denied you. Motivated by self preservation.

Usually within a disciplinary meeting the respondent is required to answer the allegations. Listening to the recording I never felt that this was properly addressed!

9:10"The membership council is for the benefit of the accused?" That reminds me of Brigham Young's blood atonement talks in the Journal of Discourses where he said, "Will you love your brother enough to shed his blood?" (Feb. 8, 1857) The Thomas McConkie quote at 10:00 was very appropriate. I still am pondering whether I think the tape recording justification was valid. Hmm... Probably. Definitely more justified than Joseph Smith saying, ".... seven wives when I can only find one." I do have a passion for history- recording what really happened, which is a good reason to record.

Have you ever had a strongly held belief that you no longer believe? I think that's pretty common. It's a good thing to keep in mind. It's a balancing act but it does contribute to humility. I would guess that the members of this family now have a new set of strongly held beliefs. These could change. Step back for a moment. The LDS sect of Mormonism, along with various other sects of this religious stream, have changed basic beliefs and doctrines. So should this change be seen in a negative light or just that time and circumstances causes people and institutions to change? One more point. It was recognized that there was an expanded "understanding" of various other cultures and a recognition that the mores of those cultures are different but not "wrong". Is it a good idea to view things this way? There are cultures and religions that do not accept homosexuality, for example, as a legitimate form of sexual expression. So should someone who accepts and perhaps even celebrates the gay life style, also accept and celebrate the opposite point-of-view of another culture? What about abortion? What about the role of women in a culture?

Still lingers :-( but have faith that things will get better :-) and praying for all of you and I'm so inspired by your story thank you so much for going out there and sharing! You've raised beautiful kids.. Who respect you and I obviously love you so much! I know that you raised to those children, don't ever get it twisted and let make you think that they raise them, meaning the church! Hell no! We can see who raise these children here.. :-) it's these great parents! I'm glad that you left the religion! Good luck you guys :-) family no matter what :-) on here :-) with you and online! :-) even if you went back to the religion.. we still love you, this ain't conditional love.. Unfortunately what we were used to being raised with by the religion.. And it wasn't our parents fault either.. My God we have to help them feel it's not their fault even more, they must feel so much guilt thinking they taught us that.. They were just conditioned as well.. so I'm so happy that you harness the love and not hate.. Leaving the religion too. Good for you! I found out after leaving what real forgiveness was all about.. Do my family, myself, going Within.. Etc and that we must love . No matter what.. No conditions! So used to that fear- based judgmental, shame induced feelings awful atmosphere type of thing, so I feel and I'm sure everyone else feels we must forgive,, never judging, giving it to them with love, they wouldn't understand the language when that happens.. That's what I've gone through in my family too.. So you must never judge just like Jesus Christ to talk, looking at him like a beautiful master! Cuz he is the way.. I believe the way he lived.. Is how we achieve heaven on Earth! honor! judge, just like you said. In Buddhist ways I guess LOL.. Like Just Let It Go, the song Let It Be LOL you must forgive them :-) compassion , understanding, whatever Christ would do we must do I love you guys. And I'm just telling you this because I'm still trying to forgive myself, it's so good to hear these stories though so I know I'm not alone :-) thank you please continue to be strong! And bless your beautiful family :-)

He also speaks a lot about the handbook, and about continued ministering, and that the church leaders said Sam would come under condemnation from God. Why should he care? In his excommunication he said he didn’t believe in God, but can quickly refer to this person he doesn’t believe in as a racist. It is like Sam goes in and out of belief when it suits his argument. Just too confusing for me. Good luck Sam.

8 Seconds “know it all attitude” what the? Look in the mirror.
You and the false Mormon prophets and apostles are so hypocritical.... the very foundation of Mormonism is literally based on massively attacking all other religions.
Whether you realize it or not is a mute point .... But Mormons literally are attempting to “manipulate” ... saying... “the Mormons church does nothing bad to the world” ...or “why are you attacking Mormons?” in attempt to “covertly” stop True Christians from defending against the Mormon War on Jesus Christ and his True Christian ✝️ followers!
Jesus surely did say “Love One another”. And one of the most powerful and true forms of LOVE is being 100% honest and telling the TRUTH. Which is exactly what we are doing as we defend Jesus Christ against the Mormon War on Jesus and his True Christian ✝️ followers! we do HONESTLY love Mormons ... we love them enough to ACTUALLY tell them the “cold hard truth” ... just as Jesus “with love” went to the temple and “overthrew the tables of the moneychangers” and said they had made the temple “a den of thieves”. (Matt 21:12-13).
The money changers and scribes and cheif priest were angry at Jesus for telling them the “Cold hard Truth” ... even if it was out of Love and Honestly!
And so ... It is ALWAYS the case ... the “COLD HARD TRUTH” always UPSETS those that it CONVICTS .... and so it is for you as well ... actually thinking we are “angry” just like those Jesus rebuked thought Jesus was “angry” at them. So so sad. Wake up!
The Mormon hypocrisy is breathtaking! One of The most foundational doctrines of Mormonism literally “ATACKS” all other churches and religions ... You need to look in the mirror long and hard at what the Mormon church teaches before you start lecturing anyone about “Judging”!!!
Mormonism’’s “official version” of Joseph Smith’s first vision ... (which is actually the FOURTH version of at least NINE other totally different versions of the “first vision”) ... it clearly condemns and “SLANDERS” all other churches (JSH 1:19) saying ... ALL churches are wrong, ALL their creeds are an ABOMINATION to God, and ALL their professors are CORRUPT ....
Mormons literally “DAMNS” the whole world with MORE of their demeaning viscous and attacking doctrine ... read (1 Nephi 14:10) it literally says there are ONLY 2 churches ... the church of God (Mormons) and the Church of the DEVIL (everyone else) .... it literally goes on to say, “whoso belongeth NOT to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the WHORE of all the earth!”
So so sick and pathetic... then while Mormons own foundational doctrine condemns all other religions.... Mormons take a play right out of Satan’s playbook using massive deception techniques...
... crying and complaining about Mormon “religious persecution” ...and telling people to “love one another” ... all the while literally persecuting the whole world with their own words and condemning doctrine... What the???
That is so horribly hypocritical, arrogant, and dismissive ...
Christians will NEVER stop defending themselves and their Lord, God and Savior, Jesus Christ from the “Mormon war” on Christianity.
True Christians will defend themselves against ALL (including Mormons) who attack the TRUE Jesus Christ who is the One and Only God, creator of all the universe and savior of the world...just as we have been doing for thousands of years!
Mormons do NOT believe Jesus is the One and Only God!
Mormonism actually teaches Jesus is a created being and Satan’s Brother...
Mormons literally teach “polytheism” (endless Gods) ... Mormons literally think they can become a God just like Satan thinks he can be god!
Mormons literally teach God was once a man like them!
Mormonism literally preaches “another gospel” just as in Galatians 1:8-9
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven (Moroni), preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man (Joseph Smith) preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
And the Mormon “Other Gospel” literally preaches about a “false Christ” by “false prophets”, who “deceive the elect with great signs and wonders”. Exactly as it says in Matt 24:24
24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
The false Mormon prophets and apostles literally TAKE DOWN the cross of Jesus and hide it away ... then PUT UP a giant Golden man/angel atop all its temples.
Mormonism mocks Jesus Christ and his atoning sacrifice on the cross by teaching Jesus and his atonement - ALONE - was NOT enough to save the word! Mormonism teaches you MUST pay the Mormon Church in order to get into the temple, in order to have “saving ordinances” in order to be “saved” to the highest “Mormon version” of heaven” with God. Then “maybe” after that ... the Mormon version of Jesus can save them ... “maybe”.
The false Mormon prophets and apostles literally STOLE the name of Jesus and put it on their churches and temples... and by doing so.... “deceive the elect with great signs and wonders”.
Mormonism “says” it follows Jesus. Then Mormonism mocks Jesus with it’s evil doctrines that diminish the power and authority of God ... and elevate mans “power and authority” to becoming Gods ... exactly like Satan wants to be God! The deception is clearly revealed!
Mormons fight against ALL other Christians with their horrible doctrines! Hello! That is literally the DEFINITION of being “ANTI-CHRISTIAN”! Wake up ... Mormons are in a cult and they don’t even know it!
Again ... Jesus surely did say Love One another. And one of the most powerful and true forms of Love is being 100% honest and telling the TRUTH. Which is exactly what we are doing as we defend Jesus against the Mormon War on Jesus and his True Christian ✝️ followers!
Unlike The false Mormon prophets and apostles that are literally documented, verified and proven whitewashers, deceivers, and outright liars of Mormonism’s history, doctrines and finances!
Anyone truly HONEST with themselves and with God knows .... Jesus Christ would NEVER tell his “only true church” to whitewash, cover up, deceive and outright lie about its REAL history, doctrines and finances... NEVER! That one fact alone proves Mormonism is a false gospel!
If the false Mormon prophets and apostles were truly honest, they would name the Mormon church an honest name! The most honest name of the Mormon church is:
      The Church of
      S A T A N S B R O T H E R
      of Latter-Day Satan’s Bothers
      and Sisters
That way the world would know the FALSE entity Mormons actually believe in … Also, that name would not offend any Mormon because it is in perfect line with Mormon doctrine.
So please .... your hypocrisy is horrendous! Do You HONESTY want True Christians to stop defending The True Jesus Christ ... who is the One and Only God, creator of the universe and savior of the world? Do you HONESTY want True Christians to stop defending Jesus from the Mormon War against our Lord and God Jesus Christ? DO YOU REALLY?? Then tell the false Mormon prophets and apostles to denounce their “slandering” doctrines against all Christians! Tell them to denounce the FACT that they teach ALL other churches are WRONG, ALL their creeds are an ABOMINATION to God, ALL their professors are CORRUPT, And their is ONLY two Churches ... the church of God (Mormonism) and the church of the DEVIL (everyone else)! Jesus will not be mocked by Mormonism’s pathetic hypocrisy!
I pray God will bless you with “eyes to see and ears to hear” in HIS name Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏 God Bless 😇✝️❤️ please continue with your reply’s. .. they are so revealing... keep speaking as we all clearly see the huge hole of Mormon deception... and clearly witness the TRUE Jesus Christ fill it with his truth, light and ❤️ love!

You seem to believe that if someone doesn't believe in God, then he/she is no longer qualified to talk about belief in God. I've seen this several times - people will tell me that I'm not qualified to quote scripture in refuting the truth claims of the LDS church. Suppose millions of people today believed in Zeus. I don't believe in Zeus, but in talking with them about their belief I could say that Zeus was a capricious god. Does that mean I'm moving in and out of belief in Zeus? No. I hope you aren't confused anymore.

It seems impossible, almost for people to understand that many people leave because of their strong sense of integrity. What they don't realize is, a great number of people, at least that I know, leave the church because of their integrity and their desire to know the truth. With each hidden truth discovered and each lie exposed it is a process of digging those false beliefs out of you and mourning each one. It seems like you have all gotten to a place where you can be present for each other. I take it from what you said, Sam in your closing remarks that you have also reached that beautiful place where you don't feel the need to control and manipulate in the name of God and the church. This is a major feat and even though you might not remember me, I remember you and I'm super happy for you.
