Not surprised at all. First VX-7 I saw was in a fish bowl of water with the speaker mic standing out on the side. It played NOAA weather radio all day at the hamfest I was at. No problem.
Glad it came out ok after the water experiment! Curious how the APRS receive/decode on the FT5D compares to the FT3D. I wasn't impressed with the FT3D's APRS decode compared to the Kenwood D72.
Yaesu has been one of my favorite brands of amateur radio equipment since the 1990’s. Their MIL Spec rating and water resistance make them durable and reliable. I feel like I’m holding a quality piece of equipment when I use one. But I also own other brands of radios and let’s just say you should NOT try this with your Kenwood TH-D74!!!!!
The D74 has it’s positives, being durable isn’t one of them. My first Yaesu handheld was a FT-207R, but the FT-208R was my favorite for years. It set the standard for durability. Heavy as a brick but it was tough.
Any idea how to program this thing as it appears Yaesu hasn't released their programming software yet. Tried importing a backup from SD into the FT3DR version and it doesn't recognize the format :-(
A question on the screen type and durability. What screen type has this radio got? Is it resistive touch or surface capacative glass similar to a mobile phone?
The static "MEM SCAN" message display, instead of showing frequencies cycling while scanning, is completely and utterly visually unappealing and disappointing for the FT-5D, and wholly unexpected and undeserving of the current Yaesu flagship HT product. If more prospective buyers knew this before purchase, I guarantee it would affect sales- which is my mission. THIS NEEDS FIXED NOW.
Agreed! I have an FT3D. The lack of SSB, and still terrible BT (No-Go with Airpods), I am now holding off to see if a possible future firmware issue fixes the MEM & VFO SCAN message.
Waterproofing obeys IPxx protection algorithm. Putting a radio into a glass of water somehow proves the radio is waterproof but it doesn't show what the IPxx standard is.
That was... heavens... pretty ballsy. But impressive in the end.

It’s the same as the FT3D. Misses strong decodes every minute or two. 🙃 No where close to the D74a.

Yeah, can't swap cards direct and Yaesu doesn't have a program to do it yet. Keep waiting.
