Rudy Flores Not really mate, it's a funny scene from Python but actual Spanish Inquisition was not so bad: most people who were visited by them got off, and it was used politically by different groups for different political motives, BUT: they never did wholesale mass destruction of human lives.
This is what happens when the planets doctors all end up in the military or treating injured soldiers. Everyone ignores that other things can kill people and then a hundredth of humanity is dead. Woops
It was less that there wasn't doctors to treat them (as bad as the casualities were they didn't demand anywhere close to all doctors on the planet) but rather that the war forced a lot of people in close quaters so it was ideal breeding grounds for the plague so it quickly got out of hand, it's telling that a disportionted number of people who died from the Spanish Flu were young men.

My question for out of the trenches is, would you guys ever consider publishing a book on The Great War? It could essentially be an edited collection of your weekly scripts in book form. Could be a sizable amount of the one million missing German soldiers are still on the battlefield. They're still finding German soldiers from WW1 to this day. About 10 soldiers per year around the area of Ypres alone. About every two or three years they find 10 or 12 together buried in a trench or bunker. If you get shelled two or three times there's not much left.
@Steve Sheldon Partially true, most of the trench systems were simply filled in so they could return to farming and the French motorway/highway is built directly on top of the old trench lines. It's tragic how many men are still unaccounted for buried underneath a roadway or a farm.
On October the 12th the romanian national council signed of the declaration of Oradea by which all Romanians of Austria-Hungary declared independence from the empire and the right to self determination. This would be basis of the proclamation of Alba Iulia on december 1st, which ratified union with Romania. Romanian units in the Austrian army deserted to Romania taking with them all equipment they could including field guns and a few tanks. The capture equipment would be used in 1919 during the romanian-hungarian war.
Wait, what tanks? To my knowledge Austria-Hungary never had any tanks, nor did Romanian until they bought Renault FTs in 1919. Would you care to elaborate on what kind of tanks were taken from the Hapsburgs?
The Austro-Hungarian Army didn't have tanks. Perhaps one or two armored cars were taken, but the Imperial Army didn't really have any significant quantity of those either. Still, a huge mass of other supplies being taken was pretty important. Realistically, it was more important for those things to be stolen, than for any number of tanks.

Indy and crew, thank you all for the hard work and dedication to bring this apocalyptic titanic struggle that is THE GREAT WAR, so easily to all of us viewer's. Im sure we all remember an episode y'all did that went over the numbers of all things used in the war I think half way through the conflict. Y'all went over how many shells were fired to how much food was used, soldiers mustered to soldiers lost. Will y'all, beloved Indy, Flo, and crew, produce another numbers episode culminating to the last days of the war of all things shot, used, eaten, and lost. Thank you all agine for this extraordinary learning experience. See ya in the the next war
Series is amazing - those inner wars "little wars" I've never heard of in general history. Always seemed so clear cut at school as to who was fighting who and why. Sadly its all happening again. Lessons unlearned / not known
I need to to do some readings but it's odd how Hitler was accepted into the German Army even though he was Austrian. I read somewhere Hitler didn't like to join the Austrian Army because it was too diverse. But still, if you are drafted, you have to go.
To say "he tried for the Austrian army" doesn't quite hit the mark, though. He had basically dodged the Austrian military service by moving to Munich (it took some effort by the Austrians to track him down). After he was found, they tried to draft him but he was found unfit for service, and managed to avoid prosecution for draft dodging by claiming his papers were lost in the mail. That changed - the ecstasy of August 1914 gripped him hard, and he volunteered for military service in Bavaria, and was accepted. So yes, the Germans were less picky - though probably not generally but in that situation when a major war had just started.
"The war might end before these lads have had a chance to die." "Oh for shame, can't have that, I guess we attack now!" Truly the most insane part of the war.
Actually the reason for that was that italy feared they would not gain enough foreign territory if the war ended before they could enter "former" Austrian territory. (Or even loose some because at this moment the Austrians had them driven back to the Piave. (Diaz was much more concerned with the well beeing of his troops than the guy he replaced ;-) that's why he didn't attack for so long)
Not 'quite' the most insane. The British Empire, France and the USA will all launch attacks in the last 5hrs before the Armistice comes into effect at 11am - suffering some 10,000 casualties, including nearly 2,800 dead. This could be argued as REALLY the most insane part of the war, but some Field Officers were still not 100% sure that the Germans would surrender at the appointed time. However, according to one eyewitness, at 11am "the Germans came out of the their trenches, bowed and walked away"
@TheGreatWar, what was the source of the political cartoon at 1:04? American? British? Other? I ask because the implication is that atrocities in Belgium (Louvain, Termond, Edith Cavell) were still very much on Americans' minds and contributed to Wilson's difficulty in accepting German peace overtures.
Of course not. In this case, maybe we shout put in question the general foresight of this politician and the rest of the profesional morons who helped to escalate this idiotic war.
May i challenge the words said at 8:19: (In terms of numbers there wasn't a huge difference) If you go (for example) with the book "Isonzo" by John Schindler the Austrian Divisions were all "under strength" meaning that they were called Divisions, but there were less men than usuallly needed to be called a Division. Some of these Units had only half the men they should have. And they also severely lacked ammo, food and everything else (even clothing). You can have twice or even five times the guns of your opponent, when you don't have anything to put in them you don't stand a chance. If i remember correctly ammo manufacuring in Austria had by this time decreased to half the numbers of 1917, while italy had it's ammo output incereased and additionally got ammo from the allies.
You're right, Austria-Hungary's production levels of munitions and everything else dropped off drastically during 1918. Already at Piave in June 1918 Austro-Hungarian artillery was seriously short of ammunition compared to the Allies. I also read that, as of September 1918, the Italian Army had twice the number of heavy guns Austrians did. Austrians also had lost control of the air.
Im sure Conrad is coming back to take Ludendorf's Place and next week Cadorna will lead the Rumble on the Piave and it will be just old times!!! Its back to one of my favorite Indy lines "Heavy casualties for little or no gain".
a 4:44 we have the major change-american bombers flying ... it is almsot the end, just 4 years ago aircraft were used to recon and often weren't beleived, now they are a striking arm.
Switzerland would have never joined the war. Ever heard of Swiss Neutrality? The Netherlands would flood before Switzerland would participate in a war.
The worst part of the joke is that I've said it in the seventh grade... sarcastically. Even the twelve year old me knew how terrible of a joke it was unironically. Stop pretending to be stupid if you really are.
I have to say, the ending phrase of this episode was hilarious, "I really have no idea", since it is truly baffling who controlled Germany at this point.
Tom Robinson 😢 Indeed so! One week before the Armistice, Wilfred Owen was killed. He epitomises the enormous loss of intellect and enterprise in that appalling war. A ‘Lost Generation’ that has never been equalled to this day. But . . . have we learned anything since 1918?
Matthew Arenson US Divisions in II Corp, used British equipment so solve supply issues. The 332nd US Infantry Regiment, which fought in Italy, used US equipment, including M1917 Enfield rifles.
He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front. He had fallen forward and lay on earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.
It is my perception that Ludendorff being 1/2 of a military dictatorship is a misnomer. You repeatedly hear how Ludendorff called the shots. You rarely hear anything about Hindenburg.
I had to look up the ghosts at 1:03. Aerschot was a city where German reprisals occurred. Edith Cavell was the nurse executed for assisting allied soldiers. I remember hearing about her on this channel. Germans broke stuff and killed civilians at Louvain.
(1:04) Yes, I remember you talking about the controversial execution of Edith Cavell (WW1 British Nurse) I looked her up, very fascinating. I told a co-worker (former nurse) about Edith and SHE found that fascinating. Plus they named an entire Mountain after her in Canada (in Jasper National Park), which shows how her death affected people back then. Seek a few years ago they put up a memorial for Edith at a New Nursing School. In England. Edith may of been executed by firing squad. But her legacy and memory lives on in the modern nurse....and an entire mountain named after her. May she RIP.
More great info & I never knew about the areal bombing that took place, so any more details on that would be great to hear. While I'm here why was it that the average British service men just got Pip, Squeek & Wilfred while it appears that Franch & US force's got presented with more. Has a medal episode been made yet? Regards Mick- Torquay, UK.

Really hope you keep the channel going after the armistice. So much happening for several years after & ties in with what you have been doing...
If only the Germans had hit ctrl+s two years ago.
On a more serious note this series has been amazing. Has totally opened my eyes to what was going on at the time.
Goodbye Ludendorff
Ludendorff got on my nerves. He was running me amok. He ridiculed me calling me a bum.
Well you stay as a chef and don't think about becoming a fascist dictator
@@joffreybaratheon9044 Agreed I think it's better this way
Indy and crew, thank you all for the hard work and dedication to bring this apocalyptic titanic struggle that is THE GREAT WAR, so easily to all of us viewer's.
As an Italian long time fan, will it be possible to have a special on Gabriele d'Annunzio?
I visited his villa at lake garda. Sure would make for an interesting episode!
time has run out
The fascist?
Mark Alan Reibscheid The protofascist
Series is amazing - those inner wars "little wars" I've never heard of in general history. Always seemed so clear cut at school as to who was fighting who and why. Sadly its all happening again. Lessons unlearned / not known

This is so powerful... I'm holding back tears...
Some many details that take years of research.
Danke
Austria should have draft Hitler into the army while it was still under hotzendorf's control.
Did Hitler not volunteer to the german army at the start of the war? Hard to draft someone who is fighting in an allied army
I need to to do some readings but it's odd how Hitler was accepted into the German Army even though he was Austrian. I read somewhere Hitler didn't like to join the Austrian Army because it was too diverse. But still, if you are drafted, you have to go.
@@KKKKKKK777js he tried for the Austrian army but was deemed unfit for service. Apparently the Germans were less picky about selection.
Austrians are Germans.
Awesome, beautiful, well done, excellent articulation ...really
That's the first time In a long time I heard Indy say that: 11:53
Wow I finally caught up and just in time too.
I've been watching since the summer of 2014 and haven't missed one episode. I can't believe it's almost over. I'm going to miss this show so much.
"The war might end before these lads have had a chance to die."
"Oh for shame, can't have that, I guess we attack now!"
Truly the most insane part of the war.
A special episode about the Hundred Days Offensive would be awesome.
it has been covered in great detail every week since it started
Which is why it needs a special summary episode that puts it in perspective.
"I have no idea.
.... n' I really have no idea.
Thank you Master!"
Just amazing. The ultimate WWI-Documentary series. After that you can get your PhD.
Why doesn't this great channel have one million+ subscribers yet?!
One of your best yet
Oh boy Lloyd George was right!
He obviously didn't mean "he was right in every case during his whole life".
Of course not. In this case, maybe we shout put in question the general foresight of this politician and the rest of the profesional morons who helped to escalate this idiotic war.
Three more weeks of fighting!
ok its nearly over im claiming this joke now
sgt henry gunther wanted to get the last kill but he ended up being the last killed
roy nettle what
It was RMS Leinster, not SS Leinster, as it was carrying mail. It also had some 500 military personnel on board and was a valid military target.
Another fabulous episode!
Like Blackadder, are Indy and the team going Over the Top in the last episode?
I will miss you all!
that would be so awesome!
As I view this it's 1.9K likes to 3 dislikes, i think that's a record. What a f*%$en channel and host and team, thank you guys, awesome!
Im sure Conrad is coming back to take Ludendorf's Place and next week Cadorna will lead the Rumble on the Piave and it will be just old times!!! Its back to one of my favorite Indy lines "Heavy casualties for little or no gain".
Hey indy, will you cover the Paris Peace Confrence and the aftermath of WW1 or just stop at the armistice with Germany?
Hype for the grand battle between Conrad and Cadorna. The one boxing match to end all boxing matches, no holds barred.
2:30 turns out Loyd George was right. It would have been better for long term peace.
a 4:44 we have the major change-american bombers flying ... it is almsot the end, just 4 years ago aircraft were used to recon and often weren't beleived, now they are a striking arm.
The thousands of lives that are simply being pissed away at this point in the war, to achieve peace, is one of the true atrocities of WW1. :(
Bummer for the Germans. Poor turnip eaters.
Do you have any aspirations in life, apart from the acquisition of turnips?
Meanwhile Switzerland think that it should join the central powers
Switzerland would have never joined the war. Ever heard of Swiss Neutrality? The Netherlands would flood before Switzerland would participate in a war.
@@perfectlyfine1675 its a joke my friend
Switzerland was neutral since the Napoleonic wars
The worst part of the joke is that I've said it in the seventh grade... sarcastically. Even the twelve year old me knew how terrible of a joke it was unironically. Stop pretending to be stupid if you really are.
"I'm not stupid! You're stupid!" - Downfall ProductionSS, an idiot.
@@perfectlyfine1675 calm down man
I have to say, the ending phrase of this episode was hilarious, "I really have no idea", since it is truly baffling who controlled Germany at this point.
At least Ludendorff didn't threaten to throw himself out the window (like Bismarck) and just resigned
And finally, after many months, I managed to catch up with the serie... Just in time for the end of it!
I’m dreading the British attack on the Oise-Sambre canal... I don’t want Wilfred Owen to die!!!! 😭😭
Sir Meow The Library Cat NOPE
I have a question did American division under British and Italian command us there equipment?
Matthew Arenson
US Divisions in II Corp, used British equipment so solve supply issues.
The 332nd US Infantry Regiment, which fought in Italy, used US equipment, including M1917 Enfield rifles.
JDemonpbt thanks man so was the II Corp the 27th and the 30th divisions?
Paul Bäumer died one of these days. Just a side note.
He died on October 11th 1918
He fell in October 1918, on a day that was so quiet and still on the whole front, that the army report confined itself to the single sentence: All quiet on the Western Front.
He had fallen forward and lay on earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come.
There's a sequel to All Quiet on the Western Front?
He died on the last day of the war, such as lore* suggests.
4:23 damn this is getting intense.
It is my perception that Ludendorff being 1/2 of a military dictatorship is a misnomer. You repeatedly hear how Ludendorff called the shots. You rarely hear anything about Hindenburg.
Cant wait for the great spring offencive in 1919!
Hey indy you seen the documentary “they shall not grow old” watched it the other night. I was in awe at the footage.
4:53 what’s this attack called?
5th battle of ypres within the hundred days offensive followed by the battle of courtrai
I had to look up the ghosts at 1:03.
Aerschot was a city where German reprisals occurred.
Edith Cavell was the nurse executed for assisting allied soldiers. I remember hearing about her on this channel.
Germans broke stuff and killed civilians at Louvain.
You never hear about allied reprisals in either world war.
(1:04)
Yes, I remember you talking about the controversial execution of Edith Cavell (WW1 British Nurse)
I looked her up, very fascinating.
Yall should make a list of something like, "The best places to go if you visit the western front." I trust your guy's opinion on where to visit.
Indy gets so animated when he's excited, one of these days he's going to slice his fingers on that beautiful Kukri
I don't know if this has been brought up already, but I was wondering if this channel was going to post anything reguardng the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 on November 11th.If this has been brought up already I apologize,as I am still fairly new to this channel.
2:27 what a prescient comment!!!
David Lloyd George was in to something there.
oh boy, I can´t wait to know how it will end.
Love to see some talk about Peter Jackson’s WWI film project. Love the show
To Indy and Crew: Will you guys be doing any videos about the aftermath and various peace treaties that "ended" the war after 11/11?
What's going to happen to this channel when the war ends next month? I don't want it to end, I've been watching from the very beginning.
One week closer to the end.
I can hardly wait to see how it ends!
What would a true German say to this dire situation?
- "Tja..."
Donnerwetter!
come on 1 million subs before armistice day, we can do it!
Just realised that we only have a few days until the Great War ends. It's going be hard going back to life before 2014.
