Thanks for the info, used brake cleaner to flush on a 14 in Kodak no 5 sync shutter Works great!
Excellent to hear of your successful repair... and it stops on a dime.
Would this work on an old (early 1940s) press camera's leaf shutter, or would it be too risky? Also, if the contact cleaner leaves no residue, what is the white powder left on your fingers?
Thank you so much for your videos!! They have saved a few of my cameras and quite a few of my dollars!
Hi. Super confused as to how to get the lens out. I have an isolette 2. Inside the camera I can get neither ring to budge. Do I start with the inner ring first or the butter ring? I really want to fix the shutter as the blades are starting to stick. I'm pretty strong but I swear these rings are cemented on. Any tips?
The knurled ring of the focus has sets screws. Loosen and remove the ring this will allow you to remove the front lens as group. Be sure to scribe a timing mark if one does not already exist. Also note that is advisable to apply moderate torque upon tools when dissembling a camera. Too much force and you might damage cause unintended damage. Try seeping alcohol around stubborn parts or apply controlled heat from the tip of a soldering iron. Always being mindful of any plastic parts that might come in contact with the hot tip.
@@FixOldCameras thank you. I will give it a try. Hope that saves this lovely camera.
I have found an old Kodak that was completely stuck. I opened the shutter and sprayed with WD-40. No, I have not lost my mind, it was that bad. It started working after about 10 seconds. it still works ok-ish. Share your experience with different solvents and lubricants (or both).
Before removing screws, I always give them some isopropyl, in it softens them nicely. Any suggestions?
Hi. First of all I want to Thank you for your videos, they have been really useful for me. They are very detailed and easy to follow.
I own a Agfa billy with this lens, it's beautiful and sharp but I think after cleaning it I puted back the wrong way, specially the glass on the back, because it only focus at 4 ft. Do you know what can I do to fixed ?
Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately was unable to find a diagram of the lens groups for that old folding camera. Unless you can find one or maybe get a hold of another camera to study, it seems the only way to get it back to proper configuration is through careful trial and error using a ground glass on the focal plane. It would be helpful if you have access to a Collimator.
@@FixOldCameras Thank you for replying. I finally see what is the problem, the focus ring is stuck. Now I got to find the way to repair it.
@ If the lubricant in the helical is solidified or very stiff, seeping alcohol down into the threads can some times work to free up the operation. It is not a proper repair but it might get you some function. If the threads are crossed because of impact, it will take some doing, but you will have too try and "pop" or "jump" the threads back.
@ Rule of thumb: everything convex goes "out-ways". Concave to the front, concave to the back. Now if there is the third section is present, try seeing general design and see where "the deeper" side goes.
Very helpful, thank you !
Hi. Thanx for the great work of fixing old cameras!!!
Well, I,ve tried with contact cleaner with no success. After some shutter releases the "slow shutter" problem came back. So i tried an acetone solvent and it works really well! I just don't know if it can cause some kind of rust on the blades futurely(?). Maybe i gonna polish them with a silicone solution (?!).
I got an agfa optima from my grandmother. Shutter releases but no light comes through.(I got an empty roll plus if I look through the back I cannot see any light coming through. Part of the shutter blades DO move however, just not the last one (It looks like its a 3 part shutter blade). Any advice on how to go about this?
Hi.
I'll disassemble the objective of my new AGFA ISOLETTE I, but not because the shutter works bad.
I'll do it because the optical surfaces of the Agnar 1:4.5 / 85 are very dirt. I'll follow this step by step.
Since it will be open, will it be convenient to spray the shutter with isopropyl alcohol or, since it is working, is it better to leave it as is?
What's your recomendation to clean the leather (?) of this camera?
Thank you.
@Fix Old Cameras, I would also want to know for leather
About to do this on my Schneider 150mm 5.6 large format lens. Do I need to lubricate it afterwards? If so what would you suggest?
The aperture and shutter blades themselves operate without lubricant. Therefore, it is all the more important that the blades are clean.
I have a sticky kodak tourist camera shutter, but it doesn't have oil on the blades. Would submerging and soaking it in the right solvent be likely to help?
Probably would be best not to submerge the entire shutter unit.
Hi I have a Taron Unique. No battery. I loaded my film in it and realized the shutter blades arent opening. What can I do?
I have a Pentax zoom 90 with sticky shutter blades, what would be the best way for me to apply contact cleaner?
FOC does not feature point and shoot cameras... although Pentax Zoom 90 is a nice camera of that style. Thank you for your comment and interest in Fix Old Cameras.
Does this apply to the Prontor-SV lens from an Agfa Isolette III?
For a temporary fix that often ends up being a long term fix any shutter of this type can be flushed cleaned. It is not a proper cleaning but for a "kitchen table repair" it will often suffice. Always remove all lens groups before attempting.
Thank you for this video: Where can I buy the screwdrivers needed? I live in Australia and having a dickens of a job trying to buy some. Thank you again: subscribed

I have a Ciro-Flex camera using an alphax shutter. It is not set-and-release. It has the same problem, except the oil caused the blades to stick half open. Does the contact cleaner damage lens components? I have no way of removing the shutter or its lens components.
The cleaner can not be contained. It will not harm the surface of the lens, but the cleaner could carry dissolved oil into the lens groups and trap it between elements. It is imperative, if you are going to flush clean the shutter blades, that the lens groups be removed.
+Fix Old Cameras thank you. I decided to simply disassemble the shutter itself to clean the blades as slow speed mechanism. I wiped the blades clean and reseated them. The slow speed escapement was carefully lubricated, and the shutter was put back together and is now functioning as it should. Thank you for your help. I will be sure to remove the elements before a flush cleaning.
Very good to hear of your success. Sounds like your extra care was rewarded. Over time you may have do the procedure performed on the blades again.
How did you take your lens of your camera?
Depends on the camera. Could be as simple as a retainer ring on a lens board or the complete removal of the front housing.
What happens if you put the whole thing inside an ultrasonic cleaner with 95% isopropyl alcohol?
I am new to this whole thing and Max Professional contact cleaner is not available where I live.
Do you know if regular contact cleaner for car electronics is ok to use or should I see if I can find some specifically for fine electronic use?
+Martin Lysdahl
It is available here astore.amazon.com/fixoldcam-20 but if you are unable to have it shipped then check the technical data on the contact cleaner you want to use. Make sure it is fast-drying, leaves no residue and is safe for plastic, rubber and metal. If it is recommended for electrical contacts and printed circuit boards it should work. Before using on your lens, test the cleaner on an unrelated surface for quick, residue free evaporation
Any chance of the olympus om2n pcb gone wrong fix?
I suspect its a hopeless case but any tips would be good.
I also suspect anyone with knowledege of pcbs could just replace a resistor or whatever here or there and get it going again but camera people arent like that.
My one the light meter works but everything else doesnt.
With a properly working meter and good battery, does the mirror rise and then refuse to run? If so, then proceed with the few trouble shooting steps outlined. Carefully, remove the ceramic board cover in the bottom of the mirror box. Check the magnet latch surface to make sure it is clean. Check to make sure the magnet latch lever is properly aligned. Check to see if latch plate is seating on the third tooth, if not adjust for proper over travel. Check to make sure the magnet is not open or shorted. Check for a good ground connection for the ceramic board. Check the switch that is located on the front left side of the board (looking into the camera through the lens opening). And yes, after all of this, the exposure board may be defective.
Fix Old Cameras Thank you for the info.
Thanks.
You may have just saved my Agfa Isolette!
So once finished, how do I set the focus ring to the original precision and condition?
Block the shutter open on bulb and focus on sign just beyond infinity. Lock the focus ring in place at infinity... than all focus points back to the minimum should be accurate. If you do not have a piece of ground glass that fits focal plane you can use magic tape positioned across the focal plane. It is available at your local office store or
www.amazon.com/shop/fixoldcameras?ref=ac_inf_hm_vp
Fix Old Cameras All the RUclips videos on my Agfa Silette show a focus ring that moves. Mine is locked solid on infinity, as you explain in your reply to Battlin. I am pretty new to this and I will be very grateful if you can explain in a bit more detail why the focus ring is set to infinity and doesn’t move. Is it a factor that one has to live with after reassembly? Or can the focus ring be reinstalled to function?
Thank you very much for your videos.
The grease used has seized the lens. Try working alcohol into the threads of the helical... if you get the the threads to turn keep working and cleaning the threads until the move smoothly. DO NOT separate the threaded components completely or you will find some difficulty getting the threads realigned. If you use a heat lamp or heating pad to try and quickly soften the old grease you run the risk of softening the Canadian Balsam adhesive that glues the lens doublets. Be patient and persistent and should be successful with the restoration of the helical function.
Fix Old Cameras thank you very, very much! I’ll let you know if I have success.
Fix Old Cameras Within 5 minutes of dousing the thread with alcohol it loosened up completely. Thank you again. I now have a completely functional Agfa. I do hope that you get the thanks you deserve for the stuff that you share on RUclips.

Mark
How about cleaning up an Agfa Karat?
Thank you for the suggestion. The list is long... hard to say when such a video might be produced.
